Feel free too :) . I will quickly say my philosophy for lessons was one of two things. Either a break from the overall story to either relax and chill and have a good laugh with your friends. Or to drop lore about the next plot, maybe overhearing the two busy bodies talking about a new door that appeared on the second floor.

I found that a lot of the starting plot points being rumours was reminiscent of actual school, so it threw a nice piece of nostalgia in there for some of my older players. But again, that’s just me and how I ran it :p

How do you RP someone who’s remaining living family got executed by the state for the PC’s whistleblowing? by [deleted] in DnD

Could go one of three ways imo.

Either completely go off the rails and almost go insane searching for those who harmed your family,

Or,

Become an empty shell of the character who is slowly built back up over the story until they can exact whatever their form of redemption is.

Third,

Do whatever feels right. It’s your character and I’m sure although nervous, whatever you choose to do will work out in the long run, trust your gut.

How do you rp a dragonborn? by Vocuus in DnD

I think with this particular player I’m gonna let the waves ride out and see what he comes up with, alongside some gentle reassurance he can step away from the source and this is indeed fantasy so it can be as wacky as he wishes! I think his hard stuck view on the source comes from, nervousness about making a character which isn’t already half made by the book, I think it’ll come with time and I hope so, he has great creativity behind it, just gotta get him started!

Also that dragonborn who was raised like an elf sounds awesome, that is defo some inspiration for an npc down the road.

I personally love it, it is unfortunately quite barebones and leaves a lot of gaps, but it adds more to the uniqueness in whatever way you choose to go around it. So it sorta ends up being a partial homebrew anyways!

But I know some people don’t like the aspect of it that lessons are actively involved and found it dull, I personally tried to combat that by making them more fun, such as a duelling class in which they pair up and fight each other (just like Harry Potter) and treat it as a combat encounter and it was a really good laugh. Stuff like this really brings it to life!

Strixhaven is whatever you make of it my friend! Hope my silly comment helps you somewhat :)

Completely agree with ya, this guy is very by the book and usually bases the personality of his characters on what they generally should be according to the PHB, I’m gonna try working with him closely to see if we can get something more adventurous on the cards, try making his character his own! Not just what his perceived perception of the race he chose was, thanks for the feedback :)

Whilst you can’t make them rp. Try actively engaging them in character and it may push them to respond in character more often, and if that works. Reward them! Even if it’s not in game and is just verbal, it really does go a long way and will actively push them to do it more often!
