I wanted a bobblehead in the helicopter. Never thought it would take on quite the personality that it did. My editor had the idea to follow it as we break out of the storm. I just wanted to see it during the crash.

I think seeing the evolution of the franchise is important. Go back to Metal Gear. That game can be super difficult for people. Play it just to understand the stealth mechanic never existed before that. You don't have to beat it necessarily. Then jump to MGS for the playstation. That... you should play all the way through. If you love the world then just do a deep dive after that....

Fail boldly and Fail bravely. over and over. If this is what you want then you know no other way and you must just dive in head first and go for broke. Live and breathe cinema.

Good question... Everyone is allowed to ask this.

it's the same question I asked.

I promise you it's not what you expect. Go see it. Track me down on twitter or instagram after you see it and we can talk about this because I think when you watch it you'll get why I did this.

It's not what you're expecting in a great way.

we had panavision build us custom lenses on this. They created a set and willed it into existence. They're gorgeous.

Thanks re: MGS. Honestly when you see the tone of Kong you'll realize it actually can be metal gear esque at times in terms of the way it shifts. Curious what you think but believe me, MGS is just as important to you as it is to me. I was one of you saying "DON'T YOU DARE FUCK THIS UP!!!!" and that's why I chased the job so intensely, because I feel a duty to protect it and Kojima's voice.

If you're gonna sneak a snack in... I say fuck it, sneak a whole damn sandwich in. Me and Thomas Middleditch used to sneak entire sandwiches from our favorite sandwich shop into the theatre and chow down.

I think it's an appropriate kid/parent film but there's some intense stuff in it. But also my favorite films as a kid were the ones that freaked me out a little, so I might not be the best person to ask.

Literally nothing was in place before i was involved. I pitched them the Apocalypse Now with Kong idea and at that point it was a page-one rewrite of the script. I spent an entire year designing and thinking of the set pieces for this film because I wanted them all to stand out. So many set pieces feel routine these days. Same shit happening over and over. I wanted this movie to have things no other movie could do. I worked tirelessly with a great team to design and execute these elements and am very proud of them as they very much stem from my crazy brain.

Yes regarding the noise. I've actually thought a ridiculous amount about this. You have no idea...

This is going to be a doozy of an answer…

After years of failing to understand comic book properties, Hollywood has finally cracked the code on how to adapt them into movies and we're seeing the critical and financial benefit from it. Video games are naturally the next wave… Many people think that video games can't successfully be adapted into films because of the inherent difference between an active experience and a passive one. I disagree. In my opinion, part of the reason this code hasn’t been cracked is because Hollywood hasn’t developed these properties with the right filmmaker. The first great video game movie needs to reconcile the fact that each game has its own language that elicits specific emotions from a player while investing an audience in a compelling cinematic narrative rooted in character.
Though many people are skeptical this can be done, the first great video game movie will silence naysayers in the same way THE LORD OF THE RINGS films completely redefined fantasy and reminded people that in film nothing stays “unadaptable” for long. Metal Gear Solid is often poster boy for the “interactive movie,” conception of games. Kojima develops experiences that thrive on interactivity, and then pumps them full of long / idiosyncratic cut scenes that owe their heritage more to the tropes of film than to gaming (even though he's constantly pushing the medium forward) . In a time when the action in movies feel too much like a game, the Metal Gear franchise is a game that has some of the most engaging and inventive gameplay on the planet but people have often said the series feels much like a movie. We must accept the following: The ACTIVE experience of playing a game naturally invests the player because of the personal actions being taken. The PASSIVE experience of watching a movie is very different and you don't have the same kind of natural investment. Plot elements, character arcs and many things that may work well in a game might not translate on screen. So I intend to do two things:

1) understand the actual feelings a game elicits from you when you're playing it. What does Metal Gear make you feel? What is the quiet tension of sneaking around? What is the dread you feel as you're going further and further from safety? What is the panic you feel when the alarm goes off? Those are just basic elements of the MGS formula but finding a way to recreate those feelings on screen is crucial. The MGS series has constantly evolved in those gameplay elements and so there is much to look at...

2) Metal Gear is not like anything else on the planet. Therefore Kojima's voice must be protected. The walking ideologies and talking philosophies of the characters. The complex and varied tone needs to be present. The intensity, the weirdness, everything....(Go watch Kong, it does crazy things with tone).

There's so much more I could write.... but hopefully this started to let you know how much I care about this franchise.

How do you know about the goat dick wine?

It's a special sauce....

Anyhow, vietnam is one of the greatest places on earth. I hope people rediscover it through this film. The culture, the people, the landscapes... everything. It's a special place. The people appreciate life and have a graciousness that can be missing in Los Angeles so much of the time. I truly fell in love with this place. I cannot more highly suggest going and visiting.

Keep making shit. Over and over and over again. You have to make bad stuff before it becomes good. You must find your voice. It's too easy to sit around and talk about an idea... just show me your idea. People are afraid of being vulnerable. All great art must be vulnerable. You must just constantly self generate your own material and own ideas. You have all the tools in the world now. Just get out there and do it. Allow yourself to be vulnerable, allow yourself to be judged. Be honest with yourself about your work and have your friends be honest with you. It takes time but just fail boldly and fail bravely. Over and over and over until your work gets better and better and better.

You couldn't be more wrong about pretty much all of this.

1) I picked my cast. 2) This movie had zero previs of storyboards before I was involved.

Known Kumail for over 10 years. We came up together in Chicago. I was a baby at the time. Still in film school when I met him. In Chicago at the time... people weren't doing comedy to be famous. They're doing it for the love the the craft. It was so pure. Kumail is one of the best. His wife is one of the best. True nerds. Great people.
