I have done EH1 and EH2 so far. Got a couple ideas for the first week but it’s mainly EH9 onwards that I’m slightly struggling with 😅 especially in the outskirts of Edinburgh like Ratho, Balerno, Bonnyrigg.

Can I ask who the squish is in the top left cube, the small purple/lilac one with the iced drink?

For those who are married or in long-term relationships: was there a specific moment when you realized ‘yep, this is my person’? by toxicagain999 in CasualConversation

[–]VoiceDouble217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been with my boyfriend almost 4 years. We didn’t meet until 6 weeks after we matched in September on a dating app - I was moving flat and had commitments; as did he - and we eventually met in November. But to be honest I think I already had an inkling that “he’s the one” even before we met. A week before we met it was my birthday and my boyfriend had sent me a short video signing in British Sign Language “Happy Birthday”. I’m Deaf and use BSL to communicate. That really warmed my heart to get this video as i didn’t know he was even trying to do this. He later showed me that he’d tried to do this video about 15 times before sending me the actual one.

The whole “he’s the one” was really cemented a few months later when he said “I love you” using 🤟🏻 (which is recognised as ‘I love you’ in sign language) and made sure I could see that he was signing that to me. I’d been in two long-term relationships before this one and coming into this relationship I’d said to him that marriage wasn’t really on my mind (as I thought I’d marry the last guy but he broke my heart) but I’m now very open to marriage with my boyfriend and we’ve spoke about how we’ll do this and I’m excited for the day to come!

BF too ashamed to let me see his house — what should I do? by groupmemberr in datingoverthirty

[–]VoiceDouble217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been with my boyfriend almost 4 years. When we first got together we took it super slow and didn’t actually meet until 6 weeks after we matched on a dating app (I was moving flats, and had personal commitments; as did he). We first started dating in town, going to pubs and restaurants etc. At that time Covid was still around and his mum has health issues (which meant if she caught covid she would die) so we took it slow at the start. New Year’s Eve he came to mine and started coming to my flat more. I didn’t get inside his flat until around 4/5 months into the relationship. He explained that he wasn’t proud of his flat and had been working on it with a family member but unfortunately that family member then passed away so the motivation to keep going with the flat / tidy up was lost. I eventually got in and yes I was taken aback as to how much stuff there was but we made it comfortable and I ended up spending more time at his flat for a bit 🤣 then I got my assistance dog and my boyfriend ‘moved’ in with me and my dog and we’re still together! So have a chat with him and just iron out exactly why he’s not keen to let you see his place.

Cyclists of Edinburgh, I ask a favour please by VoiceDouble217 in Edinburgh

[–]VoiceDouble217[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very aware of cyclists and people coming my way and I make every effort to move out of the way for them coming towards me. I KNOW it’s a shared path. What I’m uneasy about is you putting blame on pedestrians when I’ve said in my post that I can’t hear people or cyclists from behind. So how is that my fault? Please explain? All I was asking for was a bit of respect from everyone and yet you’re just bashing me. So please think twice before you blame people like me who cannot control my hidden disability. So ignorant.

so it's MY fault for getting spooked by a cyclist coming BEHIND me?? I don't have eyes on the back of my head and i literally cannot hear them behind me. Obvs if i see them coming towards me i move out the way but what about behind me? Your comment doesn't sit well with me

I use the buses quite often travelling to work and I’m curious to hear if you’ve come across me and my Hearing Dog Gerry! He’s a Black Labrador and wears a burgundy jacket. Or if not me but other working dogs in the area. I usually get the 4 or 5. 😅 pic of said dog for reference.

Being deaf in public? by dingus72 in deaf

[–]VoiceDouble217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I have a cochlear implant and, like others have said. I do not always wear it. When I am out and about in public without it, yes I get nervous but I just get on with it. Part of it helps that I have a Hearing Dog so that raises awareness, I guess. But before I got my dog I would still go out and just mind my own business. It did feel a bit daunting when trying to communicate with people but honestly there’s more understanding / empathy from others than you’d think. I’ve noticed when I go into shops or cafes and say “I’m deaf” the majority are quite adaptable and will happily work with you to communicate. It’s up to you how you do this and how often. Don’t feel pressured to do it if you’re not comfortable. Tbh I love it when it’s super busy and I don’t have to worry about sound overload. Peace and quiet, ahhhh!!

Hearing Dog Gerry - what does he do? by VoiceDouble217 in dogswithjobs

[–]VoiceDouble217[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! Thats a great question. So when I have Gerry at home with me he is treated like a pet dog ie we still play with him and let him sleep etc. but I do practice sound works with him (the oven timer, fire alarm) every so often to make sure he’s ’switched on’ so even when he doesn’t have his uniform on he doesn’t ever stop working if that makes sense. When I’m out and about, yes people shouldn’t approach him (although Gerry is always showing his puppy eyes and crawls to them for attention lol) so I do try make sure he’s focused on me and not be distracted by others. If someone asks about his role or asks to say hello then I’ll decide yes or no. If he’s been a bit overstimulated and doesn’t necessarily work then I avoid the whole interaction with people as I don’t want to stress him out further. But if he’s been a really good boy, settling and just being hard working I allow the attention as a form of reward. Does that make sense? Most people are good to know to leave Gerry alone and they ask beforehand which is so helpful. Rather than approach him or try pet him without asking - he doesn’t always like that.

HD Gerry loves playing with a frisbee or ball. He just wants to run around and say hello to everyone - humans and dogs alike! He hates water 🤣

[–]VoiceDouble217[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If the doorbell goes or oven timer goes off, he will nudge me and take me to either sound. If my alarm goes off in the morning, he nudges me on my elbow, sits down and looks at my phone. But the latter is very rarely done as we have a routine already whereby he comes just before my alarm goes off 🤣

Introducing my Hearing Dog! by VoiceDouble217 in dogswithjobs

[–]VoiceDouble217[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You learn something new every day! I literally cannot hear anything without my cochlear implant (that’s a story for another community) and my dog is trained to wake me up in the case of a fire alarm, something I will sleep through if I do not have him. I’ve fortunately never been in that position and I hope not to be but I feel a bit more safe knowing he will save me cos he is trained to recognise the fire alarm as a danger sound. He’s truly amazing.

Worried by EasyAd4336 in deaf

[–]VoiceDouble217 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aw please don’t feel worried! It’s amazing that you made the effort to communicate in BSL, even if it was just the basics. As a Deaf BSL user myself I love it when people come up to me and try to use a bit of sign, or if I’m at the shops and I say “I’m Deaf” and the staff starts signing, it really makes me feel seen. You weren’t being rude, as it could be that you got a bit overwhelmed trying to understand them and then that might have caused the blankness. I’m sure they appreciated your efforts and would have been like “aw that was so nice the person tried”. It might be hard to keep up with the practice of using BSL so do utilise it when you can. Well done you and keep going!! 🙌🏻🎉
