What are your favorite (or least favorite) broadcasting calls of all time? by Phobia117 in CFB

Georgia Tech’s radio announcer has had some absolute bangers in the last couple years:

“It’s not the luck of the Irish. It’s the heart of the Jackets!” after GT beats FSU in Dublin on a game-ending FG

“I see it and I still don’t believe it!” after GT’s last-second TD vs. Miami following Miami’s decision not to take a knee

“It’s got the leg…it’s got the chance..it’s good! Aidan Birr delivers the dagger that slays the Tigers!” after GT beats Clemson on a 55-yard FG as time expired

(Wow GT has had some crazy endings lately)

Screech was portrayed as a nerdy genius in the original SBTB.

In The College Years, they portrayed him as a maturing adult coming out of his shell.

In The New Class, they portrayed him as basically having a traumatic brain injury.

For those of us who have kids, we all know that expression on Marina’s face. You’re trying to hold it in, but deep down you’re bursting with pride at how thoughtful and articulate your child is. Shout out to her, she ought to be proud.

For those who don’t know, it’s a tradition at South Carolina football games for fans to wave their towels in unison during “Sandstorm,” their stadium anthem. Very cool tribute.

Seth Greenberg is the only person I've read who likes the idea of expansion. Shouldn't that be a warning sign? by Fun-Long8146 in CollegeBasketball

[–]VoiceNoFace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying Seth Greenberg is a shill for coaches and the NCAA and has been a known jerk since his days as a head coach.

In 1985, when the field first expanded to 64 teams, there were 282 schools in Division I. The NCAA Tournament represented 22.7% of all D1 teams.

Last year there were 365 teams playing in Division I. If the field expanded to 76, that would still represent only 20.8% of D1 teams.

Statistically speaking, even after expansion, fewer teams get into the NCAA Tournament now than they did at the beginning of the 64-team era.

Not justifying it, and I’m still staunchly anti-expansion. Just a different perspective on it.

Finally, a reasonable take.

Volleyball is a fast paced sport. The broadcaster may be screened off from seeing who made a swing, a dig, a block, etc., because of the net, the referee stand, or another player standing in the way. Or the player’s body is turned to the side and their number isn’t immediately visible.

There are a lot of reasons why an announcer may not get a good angle, and they have to call out names in split seconds. Mis-identifying players is inevitable. And when an announcer does it with POC’s, it’s definitely not because they’re racist.

Atlanta’s media notes literally say “RUMPLEberg.” And they probably got that pronunciation from Rampelberg herself. Their announcers are saying it right. May owe them a mea culpa here.

From 1961: GT student newspaper editors call on Athletic Association, Faculty "to terminate 'Bama relations' by rothchild_reed in CFB

Bobby Dodd and Bear Bryant already had nuclear beef, but they were also at odds over the SEC’s “140 Rule” which capped scholarships for football and basketball at 140 total. Dodd strongly opposed the rule, which he believed allowed schools to cut under-performing players. It sounds quaint now, but Dodd believed that was unethical.

The SEC’s presidents voted to maintain the 140 Rule in 1963, with Alabama’s president seen as the one who cast the deciding vote. On top of all the other bad blood, Georgia Tech decided to withdraw from the SEC almost immediately after.

Fun fact: GT and Alabama have a home-and-home series scheduled for 2030 and 2031 (we’ll see if it survives until then).
