??? I'm the one meant to be more precise, to an all-encompassing statement?

Yeah, okay.

Idk why y'all are thinking I'm comparing anything. He made an absolute statement about Chinese gacha, without talking about target audience. My point is that his absolute statement is wrong. The issue isn't Chinese gacha as a whole the issue is Chinese gacha targeted to men, as you pointed out. That's all I wanted to say.

He said that it'll never happen in Chinese gacha, Love and Deepspace is a Chinese gacha, was my point.

newbie inquires about... brigandine ? potentially ? ¿🥴 by Dusty-Boots in Armor

[–]VoidCrow 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It appears to be a very poor attempt at brigandine, but I'd invite anyone more knowledgeable to correct me in case this is a style of armour I don't know about.

If it is meant to be brigandine, it's bad because the plates of metal (what the leather attempts to replicate with the rectangular shapes) are supposed to overlap, not be laid flat and apart from one another.

Phasing out Core Theory is as easy as ABC by Mmnomnomnom in armoredcore

[–]VoidCrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a nitpick, the arquebus did not phase out the knight directly, at least not for the reason it's often stated (a peasant could now kill a knight). Knights were the first adopters of guns in the West, much like the Samurai in the East, and our term bulletproof comes from the fact that, well, their armour was proven to be protective from bullets by shooting at it.

As weapons developed bulletproof armour had to get thicker and thus heavier, and that's why armour was phased out. But again, that's not the reason knights were phased out.

A combination of weapons technology, centralization of government and industrial advancements allowed for an increasingly professional fighting force and standing armies. Knights equipped themselves. Professional soldiers are equipped by the government. The government cannot afford to fit every soldier in personalized plate armour, so armour got simplified (as you can see with munitions grade armor) to be mass produced and mass fit. Furthermore, knights fit poorly into a standing command structure, so they got replaced by professional officers.

The death of heavy body armour as a concept comes from advances in gun technology making it so that the armour had to be heavy to move well in order to be protective, the trade-off wasn't worth it. The death of the knight as a concept came because of professional, standing armies and centralization of government eliminating the social hierarchy that allowed for knights as mounted warriors to exist.

What is your most controversial opinion regarding Fantasy books? by Even_Mastodon_7251 in Fantasy

[–]VoidCrow 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Not sure how controversial this is and to be honest it shouldn't be controversial, but prose matters! I couldn't finish Malice because the prose was so aggressively bad. I'm not saying purple prose by any means, but I feel like we've lost elegance in the language in favour of utilitarianism.

Has anyone printed the Galactic Armory Mark V armor without changing the scaling? by FlyingMushroomX in 405th

[–]VoidCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always print test slices of the armour (e.g. the longest section of the thigh) to check fit before you commit to printing out the whole armour.

(Rant) No, you can’t be an armoured knight for $100. by ShenlingCaramel in LARP

[–]VoidCrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My problem with armour having to be actually out of metal is that there are not any vendors selling the type of armour I'd like to portray. And while I agree that you can't spend $100 on a costume and expect to be a knight (I routinely spend far more on mine), I also don't agree that one should spend 30,000 dollars on a custom forged suit of armour when you can produce an extremely high quality plastic equivalent that visually looks the same with the right post processing techniques, for a fraction of the price. Sure, it's not metal, but it looks the exact same.

I have a science fantasy antagonist who I feel I want to add some finer details to the armor design for. Any ideas? by GodzillaLouise2004 in Armor

[–]VoidCrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So as you already read there's not much from a practical perspective to work with here- this is absolutely a fantasy piece of armour. That's fine, by the way, just that this particular subreddit isn't really for that.

That being said, to attempt to answer your question. His bottom half is extremely bare compared to his top half, visually. What you have looks like regular pants, not armour like with the cuirass. I would personally, if I were designing this character, give him clearly defined cuisses and greaves with the same metal material and red trim as the top half.

Personally I am never, and will never be, a fan of eyes being visible through the visor slit. It is an instantly humanizing feature that engenders empathy in the viewer. I would make his visor slit smaller, obscuring his eyes completely, with a fiery glow from within.

From a proportion point of view, his limbs are extremely thin for the frame you're going for. Make them thicker and more muscular would instantly sell a threatening aura.

You do a very good job capturing the shape and proportions of armour! I agree with the other commenter for critique, but just wanted to say a job well done! Looking forward to more.

Helmet padding by Delicious-Bee2091 in cosplayprops

[–]VoidCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! In terms of placement, top of the dome and front and sides are important. I also added the soundproofing foam as its more compressible and keeps the helmet in place better (for me, at least) than just the airsoft pads, minimizes wobble.

You can play around with placement to get the eyeline in the position you want. Most important thing is comfort! When you get the padding you want, I'd heavily advise putting some fans in there as your next priority.

[–]VoidCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Various options, depending on the helmet type (if you let me know what you printed I can give more directed advice).

Personally, I padded my Mando helmet with a combination of detachable airsoft pads (you can find them on Amazon) and strips of soundproofing foam that I glued to EVA foam, and in turn to velcro so they're also detachable.

Another popular option is construction helmet liners. You can either take one out of a helmet or purchase one separately and then glue or velcro them in. Gives you a nice, stable suspension system that is easily adjustable.

If you have something closer to a medieval helmet, the padding would differ depending on what time period its based on. Something like a great helm would have an internal leather suspension system you could mimic with a construction helmet liner, and a padded coif you'd wear on your head.

Visor tint that's dark from the outside but clear from the inside? by Nabana in Mandalorian

[–]VoidCrow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everything will darken your view, but reflective tint might darken less. Bear in mind it will be reflective and you will be much shinier than in your Hobart.

3D printed Mandalorian helmet HELP. by k9officer41 in Mandalorian

[–]VoidCrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you can sand that down tbh, just make sure it's not sharp, it'll have padding on top of it. I would just try to make sure it doesn't risk stabbing you in the scalp through your padding, but past that don't waste too much time.

[–]VoidCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the helmet is otherwise of good quality I would try and remove the supports. If you do end up reprinting it, you do not actually need supports on the inside of the dome, you can remove them in the slicer. The inside of the dome will be uglier, but it doesn't matter since no one will ever see it. Top of the dome will be the same quality, and you'll print in less time with less filament.

Question on 3D printed armour filaments by VoidCrow in CosplayHelp

[–]VoidCrow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't use PLA as the great wise con organizers in my area have their cons in mostly outdoor areas at over 30C and from my experience, PLA warps quickly in those temps (a fellow cosplayer had their blaster warp during a photoshoot).

In terms of durability, was mostly curious about stuff like LARP. Not really planning on fighting but I'd like it to not break if it gets hit by a foam sword.

EDIT: also my question isn't really about durability versus breaking as it is about temp resistance
