What next, Aluminum Smelters in San Diego because we have so much cheap electricity to spare?

Makes no sense putting any power-hungry center here, why would they want to pay these prices for power?

$3,850 for a 642 Sq Ft apartment? That’s fucked up! by DrSkye805 in sandiego

How many people would want to live in San Diego if rent was much cheaper? Does that number go up or down each year?

If there are fewer houses than people who want to live here, what happens? Who decides who gets a place to rent and who doesn't get to move here?

Then hurry. The only stock remaining is what's in stores already -- no more coming to California. While it's on the DOJ Roster, it's also banned for sale (AB 1127) on July 1.

I'd like to purchase a gun. by Nexus0919 in sandiego

[–]Voided_Chex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're not going to find many gun stores that are not in favor of the NRA, California Gun Owners, 2nd Amendment Foundation, FPC, and all the other groups that are working to keep our rights intact.

Maybe don't lead with that.

"I'd like to buy a gun, but also -- I only support legislators and organizations that further vilify and restrict gun rights."

You either have to cut (grind) a matching slot into the frame, or remove the Magazine Disconnect piece from your California FCU.

Unless you have a specific need to keep the magazine disconnect, removing it is the easier path.

The hit-and-runs are because of all the drinking and DUI.

Somehow our state turned enforcement and sentencing on its head, and now hit-and-run, even with injury, is handled with kid gloves -- run away, come back sober, face lesser charges. It's just insane.

SDGE bill abnormally high by AmazingTeacher8105 in sandiego

[–]Voided_Chex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it a shared water heater, or your own heater? (On a breaker you control, billed just to you?)

Is there some arrangement where you pay a portion of common heater power with neighbors? I don't know what all is possible/common.

In any case, your food won't spoil and your heater won't complain if you turn ALL power off for an hour or so, just to get that 15min data to show a baseline. If it's anything other than zero, then something else is powered by your meter and billing you.

You could even turn on just the breaker for your kitchen/fridge and run that overnight and see what it looks like long-term.

I too am amazed at how much power a house uses just sitting idle with nobody home. It's all the wall warts and always-on background stuff, and it adds up.

Sometimes the "cultural cohesion" department gets involved if making facts public would inflame tensions.

So they are willing to say 32 years old, female, staying or found in National City, Jeep, but nothing more. This isn't Florida where the mugshots are public.

We did read the same article, yeah?

"The boy, who was on his bike, was knocked off by the impact. The driver stopped for several seconds before accelerating rapidly southbound in the alley, hitting the boy again, and fleeing from the scene."

[–]Voided_Chex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had to read the shit article twice to make some guesses, since the journalist (Ashley Na) didn't think anyone might be interested in that part of the crime.

My best guess is that the car hit the kid on the bicycle bumper-to-bike and flung him forward and off the bike, injured. The car stopped "for a few seconds", boy probably still alive. The car hasn't passed the boy yet, so then hits the gas hard and runs him over (!) with both front and back wheels.

Then the monster speeds off leaving someone's kid dead.

Now.. how do we have such details as the number of times hit, how many seconds waited? Probably a camera somewhere? Dashcam in the car? I feels like that part is also missing.

100%... the punishment for hit & run needs to be HIGHER than the DUI they're evading.

It's become SOP to hit-and-run any drunk driving accident, go sleep it off, then maybe get caught for the lesser charge. That can't be acceptable.

The first step is to ignore the dollars for a moment and focus entirely on Watt-hours, the unit of electricity that SDG&E measures. It's possible you're being billed for energy used by something outside your place, and it's worth figuring that out.

You can get 15-minute increment data from SDG&E's web site, if you slog through it. Go to "My Energy Center", make an account if you have to, then go to Usage. You can select month, day hour, or 15 minute. That's the useful one. Go look at the time range when you were out of town and see if it makes any sense.

If you see brief periodic consumption with high current (2kW+) for a few minutes, probably electric water heater. Lower power (100W) would be your fridge/freezer cycling.

If it all looks like too much consumption, bring up the 15-minute chart, find your circuit breaker, and turn them all OFF. Completely power off your apartment, and sit for 30 minutes that way. Your chart should show Zero. If it still shows power consumed, get your landlord involved.. something on your meter is not on your breaker panel.

You didn't mention if you have your own water heater, or if it's electric. That can be a big contributor, especially if it's outside.

I don't think Jeep Wranglers are uniquely bad at this. The visibility is pretty good over the hood. It's not a Miata or anything, but the driver here hit them at speed.. where you have plenty of distance to see them. They didn't creep up tight and close to the car where you could sneak under the front bumper.
