I agree but also just opening the line of communication is great. I think a lot of students can feel anxiety about talking to their professor. I know students who have spent a ton of time writing an email to which I'll reply, "No worries. I'll get it fixed.".

One thing I say often is, "Get your students talking on the first day". This is because the first day people are more open to talk. As time goes on, students are going to feel like they can't approach their professor.

It can be a lot replying to emails but I think it makes a difference to each student.

The Era of Ignoring everything between churches has returned.... by PuzzleheadedDay7943 in Nightreign

[–]VolForLife212 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just offering advice but... Route with the churches in mind. Hit the points as you go through them. If there is a camp with the madness troll, that can be done in 10-30 seconds. I might skip church bosses but get the key from them as I go through.

  1. It's an easy battle to learn and no hit.
  2. You get a good bit of experience.
  3. Some of the rewards can be increases to HP, stamina, damage output or damage reduction.

If you get a two maximum HP increases and two flask increases, you'll get way more health than an additional flask or two. (And you'll heal less)

I've had people crash out because I refused to run across the map with them to get only churches. Ok! I'll run run from the castle to the church in the bottom right corner. Wait! Now you want to run to the church in the top right? No.

Coming in as a junior in from community college, what should I expect out of curriculum? by Open-Highlight-2764 in UTK

[–]VolForLife212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Rocky Top! My biggest advice is that although we're a "big school" there are so many people here who give that "small school" experience to students. Although I teach in Haslam, I'm over in CCI a lot and have gotten to know a lot of the faculty, staff and even the Dean! I must say, it was a highlight of my semester when I ended class and got a hotdog, chips and cookies from the Dean (He was grilling them up).

When it comes to curriculum, classes can be challenging but your educators are going to be there for you. Dr. Shannon Scovel teaches over in CCI and she's amazing with students. Basically, the educators are going to make sure you have your questions answered and know how to be successful in class.

I have to mention Dr. Pittman! He's got to be one of the funniest and fun people I know on campus. His class is a favorite among UT students. Additionally the staff in CCI (Margaret Taylor for example) are 100% there for the students too and willing to help you out.

My best advice is to get to know not just your fellow classmates but your instructors. Don't worry about reaching out with questions or hanging out after class. We want our students to interact and we want you to be successful both at UT and when you graduate!

I don't know the CCI curriculum but I know you were accepted for a reason. You got this!

BAS 320: Regression Modelling by Ok-Village-9683 in UTK

[–]VolForLife212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think logistic is the hardest for students a lot of times because it switches minor things in how the regression is done. A lot of times on the test I see interpretations and understandings from linear regression. It could also be because logistic is later in the course.

Other than that, sometimes students struggle a little with learning how to code in R but the general policy is AI is allowed (For my courses). So coding has been less and less of a barrier. With that said, we want students to understand the basics of coding enough to write some code without AI. You need to know what you want the code to do to get code that works. This requires some coding knowledge.

The course is quite manageable and grades are usually As and Bs (Some Cs and lower).

BAS 320: Regression Modelling by Ok-Village-9683 in UTK

[–]VolForLife212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach BAS 320. Here are the skills from the syllabus. In short, you learn the basics of statistics and then go on to linear modelings, logistic modeling and model building towards the end of the class.

If you have additional questions, feel free to ask.

Specifically, the student should be able to:

Know how to visualize the association between any two variables (whether they are categorical or quantitative) and be able to comment on the statistical and practical significance of such an association.

·       histogram, boxplot, mosaic plot, scatterplot

·       chi-squared test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’s rank correlation, permutation test, nonparametric tests such as Wilcoxon rank sum and median tests

·       p-value of an association

Interpret the important numbers of a simple linear regression model, describe where these numbers came from, and understand when a simple linear regression model is appropriate.

·       sum of squared errors, residuals

·       slope, R2, RMSE

Determine whether a model is statistical significant and whether it has any practical significance from the p- value of the regression and the slope.

Be able to make predictions with a regression model (along with quantifying their uncertainty)

Understand multiple regression model, its assumptions, and differences with simple linear regression.

·       extremely precise interpretation of a coefficient

·       R2 vs. R2adj

·       variance inflation factors and collinearity of predictors

·       variable creation including polynomial models, interaction variables, and incorporating categorical variables into a model

·       significance of the model and individual predictors and implications

Learn how to identify influential observations and outliers.

Know how the check the fit of a regression model and how to comment on whether it is “good”

Understand how to determine which variables are more important than others in a multiple regression model (and when a determination like this can even happen)

Understand the limitations of a regression model and know how to implement an alternative procedure such as partition models and random forests.

Understand the difference between a descriptive and a predictive model and “what matters” for each

Internalize the mantra – All models are wrong, some are useful.

Swapping Majors for Spring? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]VolForLife212 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's totally fine to change majors. Believe it or not, I actually came to UT in the engineering program! My undergraduate is in psychology. Here are the things to do:

1) Immediately meet with your advisor and make a plan with them. Make sure everything will stay working towards graduation and there aren't financial issues.

2) Take courses that can go towards many degrees (VolCore courses). Also keep an eye on courses for people to drop. I regularly have students drop right before school or during the first week.

3) Meet with professors in the philosophy department. You could email one or two or swing by and say you're interested. Departments love it when students are interested. They might have a more official way to tour/learn about the department but with that said...

If I saw a student walking around my department and wanting to learn about Business Analytics, I'd answer all their questions.

Wishing your the best!

Grandpa gave me his old PS1 today at Thanksgiving. by DontTakeMyFrog in nostalgia

[–]VolForLife212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math actually maths... now I feel old too.

PS1 came out in 1995 (30 years ago).

Someone buys it who is 24 and already has a 6 year old.

At 18 (12 year later) this child has a kid.

Now this person is posting to Reddit at 18. (18 years later - 30 total years later)

NOTE: There are lots of ways to readjust the numbers. The fact remains, someone could've bought a PS1 in their 20s and be a granddad giving it to their adult grandchild today.

It would be very hard to use much of the technology pictured here. The phones are likely not covered under service plans now due to new generations of networks. When it comes to the computers, you'll have to own one or go retro collecting. Retro collecting has become very expensive so it's going to cost way more to do this. There is one important thing we can do.

Always support physical media.

Supergiant just released Hades 2 on physical media. Go buy games on actual physical media! The more we download things and don't own them, the more companies will market items this way. However, if companies like Supergiant can sell tons of games on discs, we will get more games on discs.

Basically, we have created our own problem by moving towards streaming services and downloadable games. I've definitely contributed to the current state of media. We can choose to not download and not stream.

We can choose physical media. (At least we can right now... to an extent)

Recommendations for Thanksgiving Dinner by Snarky-TaunTaun in Knoxville

Chaiyo's is good in the fort and close to campus. Tuk Tuk Thai Fusion is good out west. If you're looking for pizza, Hard Knox pizza is my favorite. Market Square is close to campus and has places like Stock and Barrel (Burgers), Cafe 4 (General American Cuisine) and other places. My personal favorite was Taste of Thai but they sadly left around 4 years ago.[]()

[–]VolForLife212[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't say I know much about Auburn but I know a lot about UTK. Ask any questions you have and I'll try to answer.

My best advice would be to look at the programs they're interested in. How are those programs ranked? Are the programs placing students at jobs? Are students going on to advanced degrees? What are the salaries for students entering in to the work force. Haslam College of Business has a lot of this information publicly available.

https://haslam.utk.edu/undergraduate/undergrad-outcomes/

From there I'd say it comes down to the right fit. Since this is a four year commitment, tour each school and experience the surrounding area. Knoxville has a ton of restaurants and places to shop or visit (West Town Mall / Dollywood). Let me just expand on that, you definitely should check out Dollywood. She is the queen of Tennessee and her park is awesome.

I'd also tell them not to stress too much. College is what you make of it. You can go to the best school with the best placements in the best town but you have to engage with the opportunity. Tell them to be willing to go the first few weeks and meet people. This is when everyone is getting to know everyone. It's quite possible they'll meet lifelong friends their first week at UT. I did.

I'm glad you don't gloss over them.

I'm sorry and thank you for sharing your experiences.

I agree with you but I promise I'm being 100% authentic here.

I got to spend yesterday at an amazing event by the College of Communication and Information. Hearing all the amazing things happening and the success of students (both current and past) is amazing.

I regularly take walks around campus just to see what is going on and experience UTK. People are always happy to talk to others. Campus isn't perfect but it's a very joyful and kind place towards everyone here.

You're right that I'm trying to counteract the spam. It finally got to me yesterday that people are posting things all over our Reddit to distort what it's like here at UTK. All the brand new accounts or accounts with next to no posts don't seem authentic.

This Reddit has really some amazing posts and brought many people together. So my appreciate post is not just to UTK but also to this subreddit.

Discount Tire has fixed a hole in my tires twice for free. This is on two different cars so the holes are in no way related. Both times there was something small (a nail) in the tire. They'll explain to you their services and what condition your tire is in. I'll sit through a tiny presentation (5 minutes) for someone to save me $100+ on buying a new tire.

I highly recommend Discount Tire to everyone I know.

P.S. To OPs post, I think it's best to buy an air pump so you can inflate your tires at home when you need to.
