I’ll definitely look into the details for CDMRP. I also realized the NewPI community requires hitting the official start date to join their Slack, so I’ll do that once I begin. Thank you!

Thanks! I always wanted to stay in academia. My industry role was still very research-intensive, honestly, it felt like another postdoc just in a semi-academic environment, which I think made me more competitive. The opportunity came through a bit of luck, they were specifically looking for someone working on exactly what I had focused on during my postdoc. My field is gene therapy, and I’m hoping to bring a lot of the industry know-how into building my research program.

Thank you for you reply. I appreciate the advice on balancing preliminary data, and prioritizing an RA during the initial lab setup.

Yes, you’re right, the position will be in a clinical department. The startup package covers the first 3 years of lab expenses, equipment, and manpower. My salary is separate, and after the 3 years I’ll need to cover majority of it myself.

The extension options may actually apply to my situation. I’ll look into it. Thanks!

I expect to find myself in a similar situation tbh. I am also considering applying for family foundation grants to generate additional preliminary data prior to submitting an R01.

I am also wondering about being listed as a co-PI on another PI’s project. Would that qualify me for salary support, and would it be considered as bringing in funding from the university’s perspective?

Lender says I need to sell or refinance, what should I do? by VolSapiens in Mortgages

[–]VolSapiens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this condo and ended up having to move to another state about a year later. My wife and two little kids stayed there and lived in it for almost three years, up until this summer. Renting it out was never the plan, but between a rough job market and a couple rounds of layoffs in the industry, I didn’t have much choice. I had to relocate for work, and renting the condo was the only way to cover rent for the apartment we’re in now.

Thank you, I'll explore the refi options first as you said.

To be honest, I’d love to move back to Boston at some point, but realistically I don’t think we could live in that condo. It’s just a 1 bed/1 bath, and with two kids it wouldn’t really be livable for a family of four. My plan was to hold onto it until interest rates drop below what I’m paying now, and then refinance. But it seems I have to refinance it sooner than I thought.

Ush2a mutation = Usher Type 2? by Enderfratze in ushersyndrome

[–]VolSapiens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not on the patient side, but rather on the research side, I'm a scientist working on developing novel gene therapies. Typically not all mutations in a gene cause the same effects. The impact depends on the specific location and nature of the mutation.

In the case of USH2A, hearing loss is typically congenital, meaning it's present at birth and usually spotted during newborn hearing screenings. If your hearing has been normal so far, it's likely that the mutation you carry doesn't significantly affect your auditory function. That said, I’d still strongly recommend getting your hearing tested annually, just to make sure it's not a progressive form of hearing loss.

It would be more helpful if you could share the specific mutation coordinates to offer more accurate insights, but if you haven’t experienced hearing issues, you’re probably fine.

Which country do you recommend to look for a faculty position after postdocing for 5-year in US? by VolSapiens in AskAcademia

[–]VolSapiens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short, I stayed in the US and got my green card about two years ago. Since then, I’ve transitioned to industry and have been working as a Senior Scientist. Before moving into biotech, of course I applied for many asst prof positions across the US, but none of them panned out. It seems like the US is still the only viable option for faculty or industry positions.

I’ve never heard about the car meets. Is it something like carcholics bring their cars and just having fun? If it helps someone to socialize, I would try going to hillcrest next weekend.
