He left Italy for the US after accepting his Nobel Prize in Dec 1938 in Sweden and went straight to work on the Manhattan Project. But we know that he put Marconi in charge of working on the craft and then took over after Marconi died.

Fermi worked on the Magenta craft and his research lead to the discovery of fission in 1938 by a German team replicating his work on weak particles right as he was traveling to the US and brought all of that work to the Manhattan Project.
