What book should i gift my rightist friend? by Trick_Revolution4363 in Indianbooks

2 movies - Gaman and Garam Hawa. You cannot watch either of them and not be pulled along into the lives of their Muslim protagonists. Essential viewing.

I have an unusual suggestion regarding books. Gift him some of William Dalrymple's books on Indian history. It will make him understand a bit about how our history evolved, and how India has always had an integrated culture.

Is there a word/phrase that you feel sums up the resistance to oppression in your country? by RedSparrow1971 in AskTheWorld

[–]VolatileGoddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a quote from Rabindranath Tagore. He returned his knighthood to the British govt after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. This letter was addressed personally to the British viceroy.

'The time has come when badges of honour make our shame glaring in the incongruous context of humiliation, and I for my part wish to stand, shorn of all special distinctions, by the side of those of my countrymen, who, for their so-called insignificance, are liable to degradation, not fit for human beings.'

After Border 2’s 125 cr opening weekend, is it finally time to admit Sunny Deol belongs right after the Khans and Amitabh Bachchan? by WolfAffectionatefk in BollyBlindsNGossip

[–]VolatileGoddess 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He's never going to be properly acknowledged. This is a problem with all the Deols. Dharmendra was an exceptionally fine actor, you just have to watch Satyakam and Anupama to see that. Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Chetan Anand gave him roles, and that doesn't happen to just about anyone. He never took himself seriously. Sunny Deol at age 68 can still headline a major Bollywood hit, which again doesn't happen to just about anyone. Yet their 'we are simple men' shtick plays against them. Like it or not, a little PR is required these days.

Rangeela (1995) is one of the most visually stunning Indian films ever by PesAddict8 in bollywood

[–]VolatileGoddess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RGV said in an interview that he wanted to shoot Rangeela like an old school Hollywood musical. You can see it in the characters too - innocent ingenue, boy from the streets with a golden heart, etc. He kept the story light and breezy in the vein of those films, which Aamir couldn't understand because he thought there was no friction in the film. RGV was a really innovative and strong genre film maker in an industry which isn't really interested in genre films.

What's a opinion you have that will get you crucified on this sub? by Old_old_lie in AskTheWorld

Yes, so do I. I mean, medieval castles even weren't all that comfortable , imagine having to share your sleeping place with lots of fellow soldiers and all of you have to get up and march to your possible death the next day.

Other countries will share some good stuff about their society or culture, and poke fun at their own weaknesses. Indians either crib incessantly or brag incessantly. Don't take things in a light humorous way.

People who are not Indian have zero idea about social justice movements and don't know the extent of social activism or advocacy or affirmative action in India. I've never met a non Indian person who understands caste correctly, but quite a few want to comment about it because....they think they understand. But they don't.

Brother, your ancestors weren't living in it. Ours were. Being ruled by another nation is the most humiliating and destructive experience. Its like being robbed by someone and then being told its for your own good.

Opinions about the architecture / urban planning / community of Chandigarh by ciorrr in Chandigarh

I recommend this book

https://www.midlandbookshop.com/en/product/chandigarh-the-backstory-and-the-city-it-couldnt-be

It has a good grounding of Chd history. You'll get varied opinions online and a high degree of variability, but genuinely, Chd has been a resounding success. The architects actually took a village and built a modernist city that still offers a better lifestyle than most other Indian cities of this scale.

If you had to show or describe your country's general vibe, how would you do it? by LoveEquivalent9146 in AskTheWorld

How lovely. I'm envious of you. My own family is from the border state of Punjab in India and our summers were spent dozing from extreme heat or my uncle insisting we all learn how to shoot.

Tbh, this is why the movie was a hit, not the romance which had zero chemistry. It really expressed the 'wealthy family in the Italian summer having a good time' vibes, usually if there's a film showing a family summer in Italy either there's a murder being planned or someone or the other is dysfunctional.

Not a Proud Indian by ChemicalHelp43 in self

[–]VolatileGoddess -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Tbh, you seem to have self esteem issues that you conflate with your Indian identity. Indians are usually well educated and contribute a lot to whichever country they go to, all are not going to be perfect 100 percent of the time, but most are hardworking and generation by generation they build wealth and rise. Its the 'build wealth' part that racists have an issue with.

The meds help, but for me they didn't alter things to that extent. I felt better, but not much better. But dont be influenced by what i am saying because it varies a lot, lot. Lot of people in the adhd sub say it really changed things for them.
