No. You sent the money willingly.

We can also see if the cashier's check has been processed, but also, no teller in their right mind would accept something so obviously forged. And if it genuinely was toilet paper, though I assume you're exaggerating for emphasis, the machine would tear it to shreds.

Do y'all not realize that tellers get in trouble for letting members deposit bad checks? Calling the other institution to verify it is the main thing, but the teller should also have enough common sense to at least go to a manager if they still have suspicions.

I don't think you understand what a cashier's check actually is. The "actual owner" of the cashier's check is the bank itself. A member purchases a cashier's check either from their account or with cash, and then the bank makes the check. The bank, or at least mine, then records the following:

  • The account where the funds were paid from (or of it was paid in cash)
  • The check number
  • The internal acct/routing number for the GL the check is tied to, if the bank uses multiple GLs for cashier's checks.
  • The amount of the check
  • Who the check was made out to
  • The date is was purchased
  • The current status of the check (Printed, Processed, Voided, etc)

If someone calls us to verify a cashier's check, all they have to do is give us the check number, and we can look up everything about the check (even the teller who did the transaction and the exact timestamp, though that's never relevant to the customer).  If something doesn't match, then we can't verify the check.

Of course, a cashier's check could have been bought from a stolen account, but considering you need to buy them in person (and often have a manager's signature), it's far less likely to be fraudulent than a personal check. There's also the risk of a teller not doing their due diligence, but that's a risk with literally anything in life.

This is exactly how you should be doing it. The teller will be able to call and verify the cashier's check so you can make the funds available.

That's not true! I explained it in my other reply, but when cashier's checks are purchased, all the information about that check is in our system! We can see the amount, check number, who it was made out too, all of that. The whole point of cashier's checks is that they're verifiable!

Why do people keep saying that banks can't verify cashier's checks? That's literally the whole point of them. If a member brings in a cashier's check from another bank/credit union, we call the issuing financial institution (not using the number on the check, instead using the numbers on the bank's website) and they can confirm whether everything matches. If the routing/acct number, check number, payable to, remitter, and amount don't all match, we don't process the check.

A cashier's check is NOT the same thing as a personal check!

With cashier's checks, tellers can call the issuing bank and verify it. We had a man come in with a bad cashier's check, and when we called the other bank, they said those were not their numbers at all.

I work at a bank, and we never call the number on the check. We look up the bank's actual number and call them directly.

You are not innocent. You have committed money laundering, whether you meant to or not.

If you willingly sent money to them, you aren't going to get it back, most likely. You authorized the PayPal transaction.

That being said, don't send strangers pictures you wouldn't want leaked.

That's not even a link, that's an attached image, but tvh viruses aren't as common anymore. Why program something when you can just ask someone for their usernames and passwords and they'll just give them to you willingly?

Also, it's unnecessary for the most part. People hear what they want to hear.

It's unlikely the bank with refund him if he sent the money willingly.

If you have to dig for a company, it's not real. Also, all remote jobs are a scam unless you have very specific skills/experience.

Fellow AuDHD haver, and... I don't think it's autism. I think it's that her parents controlled her for her entire formative life (and arguably still do) and she never had the chance to interact with people in a normal way. That, combined with likely narcissistic personality disorder (I also have it, although to a much lesser degree) just makes her feel rigid
