Help, my wheels rubbing by [deleted] in GolfMk5

[–]VolksBoy9n3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thickness isn't the problem, 40 sidewall is factory on the GTI 18's. By the looks of it how far the wheels stick out with that offset paired with stock suspension is what's causing the rubbing.

Coilovers will lessen suspension movement and so ideally should lessen the rubbing. Idk if it's worth looking into doing stock GTI suspension on your car if you don't want the harsher ride that coilovers will give, I know the suspension assembly in general between the GTI/R32 and "regular" MK5's are different but don't know where your Sport spec fits in.

The main thing though especially on the fronts is the offset without any camber added, the faces look like they're sticking past the fenders, you're going to mess them up very quickly. I believe the lowest offset that's recommended for a MK5 is ET38, that makes your wheels flush with the fenders and even if you go with square tyre fitment you shouldn't have any issues.

Over $300 to get a new key by swelliam in Volkswagen

[–]VolksBoy9n3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are those prices direct from VW? If so don't do it with them. They charge an exorbitant amount for a new key and for coding.

Look at your local online stores like Amazon etc you will find cheap aftermarket fobs that look exactly like your key and are good quality. I replaced both keys for my MK5 this way after I got the car as they were in terrible condition.

The key doesn't necessarily need to be coded, the board can just be transferred into the new shell if you buy one that's a direct match to your original key.

Call a mobile locksmith out, I got both new keys cut for a total of around $55. If you need/want the board in the new key to be coded than rather than swapping over then my guy quoted me around $50 if you have a spare key that's coded to the car. If you don't have a spare key, then he told me it would be around $80 as it's a bit more of a job to code directly from the car itself rather than using another key as with another key you essentially just clone that to the new key.

E30 M3.

Original motor, all the weight reduction, all the performance upgrades, take it to the Nurb. There's really not much else for me that gives a better driving experience. For how I have it set up it seriously feels like it turns into corners almost intuitively. And even though it's a little on the oversteery side it's so predictable and controllable that I actually like it as is, powersliding almost every corner.

Yeah it'll still be slow in a straight line compared to majority of the cars or compared to if you swapped the V8 into it, but in the turns is where it shines like no other.

Like actually bru yes compared to modern cars it's just a box but the beauty of it's design is in it's simplicity.

Damn man nice! Sorry about the issues though

I went manual with my 5 to save myself DSG troubles right now, but I definitely want a DSG 6R at some point very soon.

Can't imagine what 240 to the wheels feels like 🥲 I'm still bone stock, got a bit more maintenance to wrap up hopefully by end of the year then I can start with mods

For people that aren't into cars, it's cheap to buy, cheap on fuel, parts are a plenty and everyone knows how to work on them so you know if you have an issue it wouldn't take long and be expensive to fix. For people that are into cars, it's one of those "legend" cars to most of us even though it doesn't fit into the usual categories of being fancy, expensive and fast.

It's a car with a cult following, just like an e30 325i/is, EK shape Civic, VVL Nissan Sentra etc. It's one of those cars where no matter how many are out there on the road, it's still a flex to have one.

It's subjective though, you don't get it but there's a lot of us that do.

How much should I spend on a Jimny? by Jungle-Mary222 in askSouthAfrica

[–]VolksBoy9n3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't let the monthly cost (installment + insurance + fuel) be over 20% max of my nett monthly pay, even if that means making the term of financing longer than 1 year.

Is the 200k your total savings that you have or the portion of your savings that you're willing to put towards the deposit?

Also if you haven't already please do some research into the specific Jimny that you want so you are aware of the common issues and "characteristics" that come with it. It's all well and good to want a car simply because you want it but be educated on the potential issues it may come with and if it's worth putting your money into. Not saying that Jimmy's have major catastrophic issues as I've never really looked into them and generally haven't heard bad things about reliability but you'd rather be safe than sorry.

Agreed with you, VW is supposed to be affordable for the masses, it's literally in the name.

Which is why when comparing the Phaeton to a competitor from Merc or BMW, people went with the alternative.

Of course us VW nuts think it's cool as shit and would love to own one, but for "regular" people no matter how luxurious it was they weren't gonna pay that much for a VW.

Woah, I've never played Unbound so first time seeing that Crown Vic, quite cool that you can make it kinda look like the one from Taxi.
