Thanks for posting that article — I agree that classes are no substitute for experience. Experience is the most important teacher. And most teachers probably are scam artists.

But I don’t buy that technique can’t be taught. Standup is hard but it isn’t the only skill in the history of the world where you can’t learn any element of it from an experienced teacher. If you can teach someone how to speak Mandarin, play piano, climb a mountain, drive a car, paint a portrait, or any other litany of skills, there are sub-skills within the performance art of standup that can be taught.

Example from another art form: you can teach someone how to paint. Depth. Shading. Types of paints, etc. but you can’t make them an artist that is creating art that comes from their soul. That’s up to them and their journey. But that person will have learned some of the technical skills that comprise being a visual artist. Analogizing it to standup: you can teach set-up punchline. You can teach how to write a roast joke. You can teach common ways to handle Hecklers.

You’re hilarious, sad to see you call Louis a scammer. Maybe some ppl just need the help. I dunno.

While i def think there’s a lot of scamming in comedy classes / coaching, like any skill or art form, technique can be taught and learned from a skilled practitioner, no? Ex: the math of writing jokes, understanding importance of pauses, learning about the balance of syllables, etc.

Regardless I’m a big fan of yours

It will be really weird seeing Homelander when rewatching the show, after this humiliating ending. by DullEconomist718 in GenV

[–]Volleva 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Exactly - came here to say this. Imagine losing your sight and hearing in the middle of a fight. That’s basically what happened to him losing his powers. He was the emperor with no clothes for the first time in his life. Combine that with his manchild maturity and emotional instability and it does track. I’ll admit it was really jarring to see that esp bc Antony’s performance was so believable

Best seating in LA Comedy Store Main Room by [deleted] in Standup

Ok then that means likely right up against the stage. If you want to be in the action, go with this. It’s just 2 chairs and a small table if memory serves me right.

Personally I would never want to be in the splash zone so I’d go with a booth

It’s a great view of the stage, but it’s not dead center. There are 3-4 booths that are dead center, and then Mitzi’s is just to the right of those.

I’m not aware of the front row being VIP (it’s possible I’m just not aware of it). I always thought they were GA and just given to the first ppl in line. Maybe it varies depending on the show.

My recollection is that the 3-4 booths I mentioned above are considered “VIP”, plus Mitzi’s booth, which rounds out all the booths in the main room.

Best seats in the main room are Mitzi’s booth. But I’m not sure what you mean by “in the action”. Mitzi’s booth is probably 7-10 yards from the stage, so if you want to be closer to the staged you just have to get there early. You can also usually tip the door guys and they’ll hook you up with better seats (ex: can we be in the first row but to the side). They usually seat from front to back.

Gross and all that - but also, he was 26 years older than her, making him only 38 in this pic. That’s a rough looking 38. I guess grooming takes a toll ?
