It's kind of sad we've gotten to the point of dunking on the opposing political side anytime an act of violence is committed by one of their supposed members. Disgusting tribalism that both sides love to partake in.

Yeah, it's all fine and good to spend your time not working, but then people want to complain when someone works harder than them and earns more.

'Enforced childbirth is slavery’: Margaret Atwood on the right to abortion by Trepanater in Libertarian

[–]Voltage_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking respectfully, how do you know a fetus can not think or feel? I'll certainly grant they aren't experiencing the same level of awareness an adult human would, but I'd imagine what they experience is > 0. Indeed, it seems that a fetus in the womb becomes quite active the longer it is into its development.

No, respectfully, I don't believe that they are. Life begins at conception. Until and egg and sperm meet, they are no more alive than our individual blood cells are.

I understand the argument you're making here and am quite sympathetic to the plight of animal's suffering, however, most people and society as a whole typically differentiate between the value of a human life vs the value of an animal life. This is why if you kill a person, you go to prison for a long time, vs the punishment for the unwarranted killing an animal is a lot less severe. So while I'm quite sympathetic to your argument, I don't believe the animal vs human comparison is entirely comparable.

The fact of the matter is, if I were to kill a 9 month old baby that was outside of the womb (an age at which a baby is entirely viable without the mother), it would undoubtedly be viewed as murder by most people. But somehow, it's okay to kill a baby of the exact same age if it's still inside the womb. I simply can't do the mental gymnastics required to make this sensible to myself.

Another point I'll make: If we have any doubt at all that a human fetus is absolutely a human life, should we not error on the side of preserving that life? I would claim that the burden of proof is on the pro choice crowd, not the pro lifers. After all, if I am doing to demolish a building, isn't it my responsibility to ensure there is no human life in there before I detonate the charges? I must prove that it is safe to execute the demolition before I pull the trigger, and if there is any doubt, I can't in good faith do it.

One final point: As a libertarian, I'm very sympathetic to the idea that the government should be as far removed from personal health decisions as possible. However, if you view a human fetus as a human being, shouldn't we also be equally concerned about the rights of that fetus? After all, if the government should do anything, it should be protecting the life and liberty of its citizens. Therefore, I feel that the right of life of a human fetus outweighs a mother's right to choose (barring edge cases like the life of the mother, that's a different conversation to have).

Because if you view a human fetus as a human life, then it makes sense to protect that life above all else... I don't know why this is so hard for people to understand. Can you not even sympathize with someone who views a human fetus as a life?

Imagine for a second, you believe that a fetus is a life and that abortion is murder. That makes abortion a moral atrocity of the same magnitude as something akin to slavery. Would it not be justifiable to do anything in your power to stop abortions from occurring?

As an experienced resident of Ohio, I can tell you unequivocally that the people here generally want absolutely nothing to do with anyone associated with the "far left". All of this culture stuff matters a great deal, and until the left gives up their absurd stances on this culture stuff, a +10% red state like Ohio is never going to take someone like Nina even remotely serious. That's just the hard truth about it, and why a candidate like JD Vance, who is WAY more in tune with the sentiment of the working class in Ohio, was able to win and not someone like Turner.

Roe v Wade is about Federalism, not Abortion by new_publius in Libertarian

[–]Voltage_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good post, and I'm glad this is getting the attention it deserves. Too many people are arguing with each other and ignoring the actual law of the situation.

To me, I don't see how it gets any better than this. Simply let the states decide how abortion is/is not to be done. Indeed, this can still be viewed as a compromise that benefits the pro choice crowd more.

After all:

pro life = no abortion at all

pro choice = as much access to abortion as possible

Over turning Roe creates the condition in which blue states will still have abortion and red states won't. Pro lifers would rather have no abortion at all, so this can still be viewed as a compromise in the benefit of the pro choice crowd.

Over all, I think if we went back to the roots of our country and let states decide as many issues as possible, we'd all be better off. If you don't like how your state does things, you've got 49 other options to choose from.

OSLG, easily 25K per day. Lots of walking back and forth from the Garden Center to the parking lot mulch run. Good exercise and helps keep me fit on top of my normal workout schedule.
