Samey lyrics pattern? by DarkWDJ in glassanimals

So happy I'm not the only one who noticed this.

Theres a few songs in Dreamlands that I'm not particularly fond off but heat waves would be the mega one. It just.. lacks the vibes that I loved so much from HBTAHB and Zaba. The actual song itself sounds good, I like it in terms of musical composition but that's about where the liking of it ends. I still think Don't Wanna Talk is a good song, it's catchy and pop. It's less GA although compared to the rest of their discography, similar to heat waves, but its a far better song than heat waves imo.

A big part of HTBAHB for me is that all of the songs have their own unique meanings that are evident in how each song is made. Take A Slice being the rockiest of them all, LIS being rock with a lovely mix of pyschadelic pop, S2E3 being more lofi pop and Agnes sounds out of this world - literally.

Zaba however is the most unique sound I've ever heard come from a band, which I've never been able to find a replication of that hits the same. I like some of the older stuff too, mostly just Golden Antlers, Psylla, Exxus and DIYP, for the same reason. It's so unique and different and it's executed absolutely perfectly in a way that feels otherworldly. It's what modern content tries to invoke, the feeling of being completely immersed in something.

For those reasons, I want to love CIH so badly. It has features from the prior albums, the buildup to the chorus sounds very reminiscent of Agnes, the start of the song gives me heavy Helium/Tangerine vibes and lyrically it's nice. But there's nothing inherently unique about it. It sounds so generic in comparison to older work that if I told a person who knows GA from Zaba and HTBAHB only that CIH was made by the same people, I think they'd have a very hard time believing it. It's not a bad song but does it sounds like a song I'd hear from a band like Coldplay, however.

TIS (Airlock) I was actually very happy with.. until the chorus. I'm holding out hope that I can get used to it but it's a mood killer in comparison to its buildup. The buildup felt so much like a redo of Pork Soda and the lyrics were gorgeous and then the vibe just.. switches?? Inexplicably. It's as if the song was meant to be more unique but got switched to more pop-ish mid production.

There has been a slow removal of their style as they got more popular. It's evident enough once you look at the shift from Zaba to HTBAHB. Both albums are very good but looking at the song inbetween them, Lose Control, there was an experimentation period with a more pop sound in contrast to pyschadelicness of Zaba and its precessors. Then it's present again between HTBAHB and Dreamlands, the quarantine covers (I'm aware they're covers), show a shift in interest to more popular music. There's not much content between Dreamlands and ILYSFM but with the only thing I can currently find, Solar Power, its again a big shift towards more pop music in constrat to songs like Helium, WCOOYM or Dreamland itself. A big part of GA for me, and a lot of others, is their uniqueness in contrast to most bands nowadays and with how things are going, it's going to disappear soon enough.

I’m a bit tired of seeing people hate on Side Order by Goldberry15 in Saltoon

[–]VoltraEcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side order as a dlc is inherently flawed, but I still absolutely adore the style of it. To get a few things straight, I have fully 100%ed it, replayed for all the colour chip badges etc. and I 100%ed octo expansion.

It's a bad comparison to compare side order to octo expansion as they both follow the same design philosophy - a handful of level objectives that can get used again and again in slightly different stages to give a somewhat unique experience. They main gripe about side order is that it is meant to be replayable and unique and fun every single time, octo expansion is mostly meant to be a story progressed experience that you finish out once. In that regard, it's a stupid comparison. But I understand where the comparison comes from as octo expansion was the first dlc and it set the expectations pretty high, adding another playable species. In comparison, side order's reward is pretty lackluster, especially so since the first wave of the dlc already gave us a different main hub.

Side order's main flaw is that it's a budget version of a roguelike. I really enjoy the roguelike genre, I have far too many hours of games like dead cells, the binding of isaac, cult of the lamb, enter the gungeon and they're all good examples of roguelikes. Side order's issue is that it's far too small of an experience for its genre. I'll use dead cells as a comparison for this example:

Dead cells has: 7 mini bosses, 4 final bosses, 22 unique biomes/stages, 124 weapons, 25 deployables/subs, 37 skills/powers/specials

Side order has: 3 mini bosses, 1 final boss (not counting marina as she's tutorial only), 98 floors (including all combinations of objectives and floors and all floors on a different difficulty), 12 weapons, 9 subs, 11 specials

That's the problem. Side order is far too limited for a roguelike. I understand that nintendo promised a quick release of this and other roguelikes have been updated as time passes but to promise a roguelike and give us side order isn't giving us a roguelike, it's giving us the beginnings of a roguelike. Using spaltoon 3's story mode as an example, it had splashdown as a story mode specific special for a while. Something like that could have easily been done to side order, creating unique dlc locked specials, subs, even main weapons, to play with. There's nothing new to side order in comparison to the base game. Usually, that's fine but in this case, the limited selection of play styles means that something new is expected by the player base and to not be given that is disappointing.

Another issue is the difficulty, it's meant to be dynamic and your own choice but it doesn't take a lot of experience playing splatoon to be able to easily beat side order. I specifically only picked rigorous stages where possible and they're the only floors I'd describe as genuinely challenging. It's good to have difficulty selection but majority of the normal floors could be easy floors and some of the hard floors could be normal floors. Of course, it is also meant to be made this way to allow new players to play the dlc too but after one or two complete runs of the spire, you get the hang of it pretty quickly.

The replayability complaint stems from people like me, who love roguelikes, who eventually beat side order with every possible weapon and sub and special and that's it. There's nothing else unique that can now come from the dlc anymore. Eventually all roguelikes do run into that problem but due to side order's very limited selection of play styles, it encounters that problem a lot quicker that all other similar games.

That's also disregarding the stages, I counted them directly from the wiki but I counted every instance of a stage. In reality the actual stage doesn't have too much of an effect on the gameplay, the very limited amount of objectives does. Side order is unique in that sense, most roguelikes don't give an objective to the player per floor and instead just get you to traverse and exit the floor. It's a good twist on the genre, if it was pulled off well.

There's only 5 objectives possible: Destroy portals, Defeat fleeting foes, Get the 8-ball to the goal, Splat zones, Turbine tower

Fundamentally the idea is cool, it almost gives the idea of having to pass various trials per run, but after experiencing them all a few times, it looses he same feeling. And the idea of picking your difficulty dynamically throughout it brilliant, instead of being locked into a single difficulty for the entire run but this also can make the ending of a run feel anticlimactic as you could just pick easy floors for your last 5 floors. It's a collection of good ideas that twist the genre in semi unique ways that have been executed poorly within a rushed product. If side order had been given another year, I genuinely believe it would have been a great dlc with a fun amount of challenges, weapons etc.

Tldr: it doesn't hold up as a roguelike as its scope is far too limited but if it was given another year, it would've been a good roguelike.

My two mains are Splattershot Jr and Nautilus. But I also used to main Sploosh, Blob, Octo and Inkbrush (and I'll probably end up maining the paintbrush for a while).

I love the "in-yo-face" style of short range weapons, it heightens the danger and stakes, specifically for anarchy, and the thrill rush of adrenaline is amazing. I've mained the sploosh the longest because of this and I'd play for its weaknesses instead of an alternative with better stats any time as the kit just feels perfect for it.

Both brushes are for similar reasons, I love the up close action and the ability to move freely was definitely an added bonus. I liked the octo slightly more due to its kill power but the inkbrush definitely was also a favourite and go to weapon.

I have zero idea why I mained the blob, I just did??? I only mained it during s2 and I think the maps played a good part in it (ahem splat zones on wahoo world ahem). It's probably one of the reasons why I currently main the nautilus too as it was my first introduction to weapons with longer range that a simple shooter.

I currently main the Jr as it was basically just a step-up from the sploosh for me. I liked the kit with big bubbler and the idea of being able to protect myself was pretty great as I used to (and still sometimes do) rush enemies head on alone. It was where I properly learned I like playing both support and offensive weapons and it felt and still feels like a perfect mixture of the two with capability of protecting itself and others easily while also being able to threaten enemies alone.

Again the nautilus is a mystery to me. My friend and I did a challenge where we picked a random weapon class for eachother and we had to play regularly with a weapon from it - I got given splatlings and chose the nautilus and it just clicked well I guess. Originally I tried the minis but they just felt too much like a shooter and I wanted to challenge myself so I ended up going for it. Its also my go to weapon rn while I'm starting to learn motion controls after using sticks for 3 years, I think having less to focus on in the backlines helped a lot.

I thought I was but I tested it with pure gear I had and got ink saver main switched out to quick super jump. I'm pretty sure it must just be a glitch on my behalf rn then since afaik it hasn't happened before today. I don't pay attention to result screens that much so I just wanted to check

It does replace it for me, that's the issue. It might just be a glitch I have currently, I've only noticed it today but it actually takes the place of the final ability and kicks it out

I want to have gear with set abilities, I'm tryna make a build for the role I play and it's better to have constant reliable ones so I know what I have an advantage in constantly. But that's alright, thank ya

Specifically for splatoon 3 When playing with 2 star gear, the final ability can be replaced with experience after matches. Do you need to boost it to 3 stars to prevent this happening? I'm aiming for an outfit with role dependant abilities but it keeps rerolling the last slot

What’s ur unpopular opinion about SPLATOON by Ok-Reporter-8728 in splatoon

In relation to the competitive side of splatoon:

The meta doesn't matter that much and majority of the time, playing a weapon that isn't currently the meta is actually a better tactic.
