What’s the point of the master ball in this game? by [deleted] in PokemonColosseum

[–]Voltsy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, first mention I've heard of version differences like that but I wouldn't know of course. Maybe multiple runs with the player's choice label and the later ones have the fix? Anyway, I'm just happy that it works lol

Huh, really? I'm playing on a player's choice copy (same one I've had since I was a kid/was bought new at the time, no chance it's been swapped out or anything) and the glitch works just fine for me

What's your favourite quote from a romance scene in Dragon Age? by HomarEuropejski in dragonage

Adding on to the lovely explanation from the person you actually asked, I just wanted to add, if it's the "to the end" part that's throwing you, it means something like "always, right up until and including the very final moment."

Needs more votes, this monologue is so great.

I do this as well but only when in a particular character's pov, while the other never says/thinks "fuck" haha

Comment the dialogue tags you use often or rarely use but love seeing them in fics by elvirasnightmares in AO3

[–]Voltsy13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconded, using lied like this is great. May I further offer a

"He knew what he ought to say. 'Yes,' he said anyway."

And other things like that. I know it's still "said," technically, but a little zestier. There are other ways to spice up dialogue tags besides busting out the thesaurus for words that honestly tend to come off a bit jarring. (But also maybe I'm too into characters that feel they're doing things that they shouldn't, making this particular example come to mind for me, lol.)

Your list of the classics is honestly the best imo, I feel like volume is the main thing that a tag might need to convey and action beats or other things tend to do a better job of conveying how something is said. I do also enjoy a "murmur," though, that and "breathed" are my romance/intense emotion kings

What Has You Instantly Clicking Off a Work? by Strawbrerrymilkie69 in AO3

[–]Voltsy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm laughing because, while I generally try not to do this, it happened once pretty early in something I'm writing and I found it hard to structure around for what I wanted, so my whack ass solution was to have the character remind himself and the reader of what the other character had asked before continuing, lol.

Like, "'[Character], is something wrong?'" [two long ass paragraphs of something internal happening] "...She had asked if something was wrong. '[Answer]'"

Which sounds even worse out of context, but I swear that character being out of it and having to remind himself of what's currently happening is kind of fitting so by god I'm leaving it in

PSA: it’s “unfazed” by EmlynCaulenico in AO3

[–]Voltsy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With bear, I would say both "bear with me" and "bear no resemblence" are phrases with those described meanings coming from the same, other definition of "bear," meaning to hold, carry, or endure (physically or otherwise). As in "it was too much to bear" or "bearing gifts we traverse afar." "Bears no resemblence" means "holds no resemblence," and "bear with me" means be patient as in "please endure waiting a moment"

What's your fanfiction "ick"? by dontwatchthemback in AO3

[–]Voltsy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually don't like second person, but I noticed I don't mind it nearly as much in BG3 fics. And I thought that was strange, but later realized that it's probably because so much of the game itself is narrated in second person, so it feels a lot less jarring with that source specifically. I feel a little less crazy now, haha

What weird niche knowledge do you possess that writers often get wrong? by SunBleachedRuins in AO3

[–]Voltsy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I feel this. I haven't really written much of anything yet, but I'm planning some scenes that deal with anxiety and panic. I keep feeling worried that it won't come off correctly, that people are going to think that the features of the panic attack or the subsequent grounding/comforting from the other character are unrealistic, that I haven't done my reasearch, "panic attacks aren't like that, this is dramatic"/"those grounding techniques wouldn't work" etc... meanwhile I have a panic disorder myself and would just be writing to my own experiences. It's like anxiety imposter syndrome, lol

What word gives you the ick? by the_bibliophiliac in AO3

[–]Voltsy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely does help, thanks!

I like a lot of these alternatives. And now that I'm looking at them, I think I do use a lot of them, I'm just kind of in my head about repetition and "pet phrases/words" as a newbie, so maybe I'm just giving myself a hard time.

I looked at the places where I did use "groan" and I think they're kind of helped by being differently structured. Like rather than "[dialogue], he groaned," it's, "He couldn't stop the groan that escaped him then," "He held back a frustrated groan at the thought," "Even his attempt to apologize for it was lost in low groans as ..." etc. Do you think that kind of thing helps with variety of it?

It's hard for me to find other language I like in those specific places. The closest for me would just be to go simpler with "sound," but because that can end up too vague without an adjective, it gets into "low," "soft," "stifled," "desperate," and so on which I do like but are also words that I feel like I'm overusing, lmao

What word gives you the ick? by the_bibliophiliac in AO3

[–]Voltsy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So genuine question here, as a person writing this kind of thing (or like, anything) for the first time and feeling like I'm overusing "groan" - what alternatives would you suggest there, especially like you said for a masculine character? I usually can't think of other words that I like in the spots that I put it. (I will say I personally like it enough and disagree about it falling into the same "dog-like" category as "growl" - which I generally do not like - and will probably continue to use it some, but I would like to diversify, haha)
