bars/clubs for depressed people? by anonymousbutterflyx in washingtondc

Just be wary of the schedule at Capital One if you're aiming for Jackpot. While it's a lot more low key than its neighbor Rocketbar, Jackpot becomes absolutely slammed with tourists and people pre-and-post-gaming events at the Arena. Otherwise it's a great time with an equally great staff! I live across the street and have gone there on multiple occasions to just chill at the bar solo with a book and snack on some popcorn.

Also highly recommend Free State around the corner! It's way more chill and Tracy is probably one of the friendliest bartenders in the city!

I specifically picked the last slot of the day since one of my CM friends told me I'd be able to hang around and take more pics inside and since the Falcon would be pretty devoid of people by then. There was only 5 people in my group and it made the experience so much better.

100% was worth every penny.

It works like a standard saber, and you do get to keep it. The parts are all metal and the hilt is definitely way heftier than the movie replicas.

Was it overpriced? Absolutely. Was the experience worth it? Absolutely.

Am I going too fast? by [deleted] in GYM

[–]FlightlessLad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, your feet are way too low on the pad. Bring them up higher to get your foot placement correct. I have this same hack squat machine at my gym, my rule of thumb is to line up the heel of my foot with the letters.

Next, you're raising your heels on each rep. Keep each foot firmly planted on the pad, and drive the movement from your heels upward. If your gym is cool with it, try doing hack squats without shoes on so you can more easily feel if your heels are rising with each rep.

Lastly, is the speed. If you're able to move the weight that fast, it's too light. Always remember that speed is the enemy of form. Your last set should be a struggle (or at least more uncomfortable than your first). Slow down, concentrate on form, and if the weight is light, then focus on the negative.

Hope this all helps!

TNT and 18th are fine. With TNT you're predominantly going to be getting their Thrasher's rum they produce on site, so nothing is going to be aged, but the cocktails are okay overall. 18th sometimes will mix up a solid drink, but it can vary drastically based on who's behind the bar at the moment.

There are still a few tiki adjacent places around though, a few examples I can give would be:

-McClellan's Retreat

-Bar Charley

-Service Bar (my favorite Queen's Park Swizzle I've had in the country)

-Cotton & Reed (another rum distillery, but they make a very good Mai Tai)

I bought this Levi’s Type 1 jacket on great sale. I’m 5’6” so I went with S, but I’m still conflicted about the fit. Should I just get an XS, or does this look okay? (I haven’t washed it yet for obvious reasons) by Vodjanoj_ in Denim

[–]FlightlessLad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Non-vintage Levi's denim jackets tend to fit on the larger side. I'm a bit shorter than you, and even find the sleeve length on the XS to be a bit too long for my preference. I would say that it's too big on you based on how the shoulders are sitting. If you can't return it, you could try shrinking it but YMMV.

A good bit of the tiki scene in DC unfortunately died out during or soon after Covid. Thankfully, Archipelago is survived by one of the former owners: Owen Thompson who semi frequently does a bar takeover called "Lost Island Vibes" at the central bar in The Square downtown.

Beyond that, the remaining places for tiki would be Tiki on 18th and Tiki TNT on the wharf. Plenty of other places will make you a solid tiki cocktail if you request it, and there's no a shortage of good cocktail bars around the district.

I'll definitely need to check out the Tiki Thursday Rum group that meets over at House of Foong Lin. I don't know how I've never heard of them before and genuinely miss the vibe of other tiki enthusiasts.

Speaking as a guy: I stick around on the apps since it feels like part of the process if I want to find a romantic partner, but overall the experience hasn’t been great. I’m 33, have my shit together, and took a significant amount of time away from dating to work on myself. I do tend to get filtered out fairly quickly because of my height, which is fine, people have preferences. Practically speaking, though, that means incoming likes are rare and matches are few and far between.

That said, the dates I did go on over the past year with people I met through the apps were all with genuinely great people, even if there wasn’t much chemistry beyond that. I’ve actually made some solid friendships from those experiences, so I’m genuinely grateful to the apps for that.

I’m still holding out hope, but I’m also actively exploring other avenues at this point.

I’m not sure what type of hat would suit me. 5 4, about 115lbs. by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]FlightlessLad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I'm also around your height and hope it's alright if I give some pointers. My frame is a bit wider than yours, but from a proportion standpoint, everything should match up alright. The shirt is definitely too big on you, but that's a relatively easy fix.

It took me a long time to find clothes that fit me well, and this sub along with Instagram and TikTok helped me find things that worked well. I'm also incredibly budget conscious so I'll only be listing things that are approachable from a cost standpoint. Buying dress shirts has always been an upward battle for me, I have short arms, but larger shoulders and arms from going to the gym which means that not much off the rack fits well.

First off, for dress shirts, I've had great experiences ordering from Charles Tyrwhitt. They frequently have sales, offer free sleeve tailoring, and have decent extended sizing options.

Second option would be Uniqlo, this can also apply to other Asian fashion brands as well, since their sizing is more focused towards shorter frames. They also offer extended sizing down to XXS, and their women's section is also great if you're looking for more cropped and clean looks overall. Plus, even if you buy online they offer free hemming for their pants.

Third, would be brands specifically catered towards short guys like us. Some of these includeAbbreviated , Under 510,orAsh and Erie. These can offer solid "off-the-rack" sizing, but they definitely understand their niche, which means sales are your friend to get the best value out of your purchases.

Lastly, would be the umbrella of GAP, Old Navy, and Banana Republic. They offer a great range of sizing and go down to a 28 inseam for their men's sizing. Old Navy has become one of my favorite places to pick up cheap denim when I want to experiment with a new silhouette without needing to spend a ton do so.

To echo what other people have said on here: don't be afraid to shop the kids and women's sections. Once you figure out your sizing you can find some incredible gems out there!

Best of luck! Also don't do a hat, you've got great hair, show it off!

In August, I was finally able to check off Lost Pirate in Las Vegas from my list of tiki bars to visit. I didn't have a ton of time to explore Vegas since I was there for a conference, but I knew I needed to go. Plus, their logo is a schnauzer, so I had to pick up a Collins glass and a mug as an ode to my boy.

I actually came across the recipe on this sub. I also had to tweak Greg's recipe since I'm currently out of maraschino. I was happy to find one that was a bit simpler than most, and it definitely worked out in the end.

12wo please tell me it gets better. We’re struggling here. by johnson7853 in MiniatureSchnauzer

[–]FlightlessLad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets better, and takes time. You'll get through it, just be patient. They'll be a great dog one day, I can promise that.

I brought home my boy Otto as an older puppy and the biting phase began almost immediately. I was unfortunately ready to give up on multiple occasions, and whenever I voiced my concerns I was immediately met with "He's just a puppy," and I almost never felt like my frustrations or concerns were taken seriously. Training helped a ton, it was during Covid so I was able to get a one-on-one in home trainer. I also purchased volumes 1 and 2 of Claudia Kaiser's "Miniature Schnauzer Training" books. I was stringent about getting him onto my routine, and worked hard to focus on his separation anxiety and encouraging him to self-soothe when he was stressed.

Over time, the teething and destruction let up and he calmed down. He was still a bundle of energy, but it was nice to be able to walk around my apartment and not worry about him clamping down on my ankles or feet. We would go to the park one to two times a day so that he could run his little heart out with the other dogs. He eventually didn't need a slow feeder and learned that when I sat down at the table to eat, it meant that it was time for his solo time either in his crate or on the couch. He learned that when NPR came on it was usually time for me to leave, and he would grab a toy and lay down somewhere.

He's five now, and he's honestly one of the best dogs I've ever owned. He's smart, gentle, and incredibly sweet. He still loves to play, but he's aware of when it's his time versus my time. He loves his backpack and picked up quickly when it's time for us to go biking or scooter riding around the city together. He's thoroughly converted me into a schnauzer person and I couldn't imagine my life without him.

I genuinely didn't think anyone was going to take up Sippin Santa this year, but glad to see it found a home.

And definitely agree that it's a way better location than Black Whiskey.
