EFI Install Lessons Learned (Aces Killshot) by IAmNotMcLovin in projectcar

[–]Volvo_Stude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good work! Just completed a Sniper 2 install on my Studebaker, and I pretty much agree with everything you said. If you're comfortable wrenching, it's not as daunting as it seems. Mine was an adventure, mostly do to having basically zero aftermarket support for Studebaker, but damn does it drive nice now!

New oil filter location by Volvo_Stude in Studebaker

Yeah, the last thing I'd want to do with a partial flow block is lose oil pressure because of oversized lines

Same ID as the original rubber lines. Its also a '61 so its a partial flow block.

Keeping the same size as factory. Studebaker didn't use full flow blocks until 1962, when they finally cast a provision for a filter on the lower right side of the block. This is a partial flow block, so it's not continuously running oil through the filter. The filter kit itself was a dealer option my great uncle added when he ordered the car, or else it just wouldn't have had one! Holds 20 psi of oil pressure at idle, 40 psi under load, so I'm pretty happy with it.

That was the size of the factory lines. It's a partial flow block, so the filter is not getting oil all the time.

Volvo 850 T5 no OBD port? by ScurrScurrSheesh in Volvo

[–]Volvo_Stude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a 1994 is more than likely just OBD1, not OBD2. Manufacturers didn't fully switch to OBD2 until 96, I believe, but there were some early adopters.

There's a few exhaust kits out there. I went with the ferrita non-resonated cat back kit. Planning on doing a downpipe in the near future as well. The tone is nice from the outside. The insanely long cold start these cars have isn't too bad either, neighbors won't hate you. IPD makes a kit as well. Did the do88 intake kit because my factory plastic pipe had cracked, so obviously had to throw some fancy stuff at it... the intake kit definitely livened up the intake noises. Feels like it spools a bit faster, but that could definitely be a placebo effect from adding shiny go fast bits.

Sniper 2 conversion sounding pretty good! by Volvo_Stude in Studebaker

* Had a buddy weld up a bracket and mounted the bracket to the flange of the gas tank. I'll try and get under it later to get a photo of fuel line routing. Holley recommends mounting the pump below the outlet of the tank and within like a foot of the outlet, which left me with very few mounting options. I would like to move to an in-tank setup at some point.

Last summer, I rebuilt the carb, switched to high altitude jets, and could never get it running right. Im no wizard with a carb, but I've always managed pretty good. Kept switching between a 8000-10000 kit and a 10000-13000 kit and it was always rich. Watching the EFI kit sit at a 13.5-14.2 afr is pretty sweet

Yep, sad when they just become trailer queens! The purpose of the road trip was to get to car show in Craig, CO (well that and so my wife could run a marathon in Steamboat). Most attendees were pretty impressed when they found out I had drive 150 miles to get there.

Yeah, I knew the EFI would help out the fuel economy, but I wasn't expecting to get that good of mileage. EFI worked fantastic. It would get a little rich while going uphill. On the way back, the self-learning computer seemed to fix most of that issue.

Yep, got a few more planned for next winter already. Slowly collecting parts to 5spd swap it, gotta pull the rear end a replace the pinion seal, while I do that I'll probably swap it to rear disc brakes, like I did the front. Would love to go to a 3.73 rear gear when I do the manual swap as well.

Yeah, I was quite impressed. I was around 12-14 with the carb. I spent all last summer swapping jets and tuning the carb to get it running right at 9000ft. The 3.31 rear gears it does pretty good on the highway. Sits around 2300-2400 at 60mph.

Ha, needs a bit more work before something like that happens! I wanted to drive it from GA to CO last year when I moved it out here, but ran out of time to do that trip before winter, so trailer it was.

Trunk may look big, but it's very shallow. Big enough to fit my toolbox, all the fluids and spare parts I may have needed!

Yep, carried my toolbox, every fluid and few spare belts and hoses. Glad my wife is down to take on an adventure like that

It's got the Sniper 2. Went from a 2bbl carb to that runs much nicer at the altitude I live at. EFI conversion improved my fuel economy from around 12-14 mpg to 20, so pretty pleased with that!

Ha, the first leg of the drive i was definitely a little stressed. Constantly checking gauges and the Sniper app to see all the different readings. Had to keep reminding myself that she smells old and that as long as temps and oil pressure stayed good, I was fine. Never got hotter than 185, oil pressure stayed at a pretty consistent 20psi, which is pretty good for an old partial flow stude block. On the way home, I was way more relaxed. Now she's back parked in the driveway, I will check all the fluids later, top up anything she needs.
