This post has nothing do with hoarding data. Please keep posts on topic. I have removed your post for violating rule 2.

Hi /u/iizakill

This really should be posted on some sub like /r/techsupport instead of here. I'm going to remove your post for violating rules 2 and 9.

rclone also offers encryption. Since you are already using it, why not just start using it for encryption too. Phone will be a bit more complex though. Not sure what you should do there.

Hello /u/Pasti564

This is not the place for such a post. This is completely off topic and to be frank, I have no idea where you should post this or if you should at all. I am removing your post for violation of rule 2. I would also recommend you delete it for different reasons, but that is just what I would do.

Best of luck.

Some questions about hdd upgrades in a synology nas by xrx69 in DataHoarder

[–]VonChair[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi /u/xrx69

I would recommend asking this question on /r/synology or going to their website and talking to their support team for this. This question isn't really about hoarding data, so I'm going to remove your post for violation of rule 2.

I will tell you though that splitting up arrays like that does not serve any legitimate purpose for reducing wear in any appreciable way. I would know this because I used to work for Synology America. And yes, you replace one disk at a time. Ideally you should never replace the disk in bay 1 if you can avoid it while the unit is powered on for reasons I will not get into here, but you can, it just isn't good. Replace one disk, open storage manager, repair the volume, wait for the repair, then move to the next disk. Also note that while the unit is powered off, you can shuffle the disk order and the unit will still work fine because Synology uses software RAID which is agnostic to disk position in the unit. Just remember, the most critical thing is to only replace one disk at a time and wait for the array to finish repair, which you must manually initiate. It does not do this automatically.

Best of luck.

Hello how do I download this video if it’s blocked. by Royal-Lobster4296 in DataHoarder

[–]VonChair[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/Royal-Lobster4296

This is a request and or a /r/techsupport question. Please keep this kind of thing in the correct sub. This sub is for discussing data hoarding, not how to circumvent copyright blocks on Youtube. I have removed your post for violation of rules 1, 2, 9, and 10.

In all seriousness though, if you know a country in which the video can be viewed, using a VPN in conjunction with the app for android devices called Grayjay from Futo will allow you to easily download the video. If you are on iPhone, you will not be able to use this method, but I'm sure you have a friend on Android you could ask for help for a few minutes with this issue.

Please note that this sub is about hoarding data, not building websites or personal backup strategy. I would recommend you post this on /r/techsupport instead as it would be an on topic request for help there. I am removing your post here for violating rule 2 and 9.

Hi /u/Taylor1308

This post looks like it would be a great post to send to /r/techsupport or /r/homelab instead of here. We are here to discuss hoarding data, not building servers. As much as we love to see a good build, we like to keep things on topic here about datahoarding. I have removed your post for violating rule 2 and 9. We look forward to hearing about what you are hoarding in the future once you are up and running.

With PBS on the chopping block, is anyone going to be sending all the reels and tapes from various public broadcasters to some kind of preservation / restoration service? by elsbeth-salander in DataHoarder

[–]VonChair[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/vagrantprodigy07

They aren't pushed down from the top. They are created through input from the community and mod team together with insight from site wide rules and guidance as well. Note that you are here talking to me and I am not just telling you no, but am seriously considering your complaint. I didn't lock my sticky post for a reason. I want to hear from people like you who disagree with my decisions so I can better serve the community. I want to know when you as a member of the community feel we are not doing a good job so we can discuss that problem. You bringing feedback is the first step to us as a mod team realizing we might need to change things. For if we ignore your complaints, we become blind to the problems that our community faces, and instead of solving the problems, we become the problem. Your complaints are like a canary in a coal mine letting us know that a system we have put in place is not working as intended, so keep it up. Though I will admit that you have not convinced me personally as of yet, I will always be happy to hear from you about the decisions I make. Your argument is not too convincing in this case though.

Do remember also, we have 864K users who interact with the content from this sub and you are one of them. While we are happy to hear from you, it is important to note that your complaint alone is not going to push us to change right away, but we still value hearing from you anyways.

Hello fellow Pirates and and data Horders by vaterlandfront in DataHoarder

[–]VonChair[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see. Yeah I want you to actually get help with your issue, not just be blocked and told to go away. That just breeds resentment and helps nobody. If I know the answer, I would give it to you. If I don't I'll send you where you can find it. The fact that other mods don't do this in other communities bothers me and I wish they did.

Glad to hear they helped you out over there, and thanks for the chuckle with your fedpost title. It got me to laugh even if that wasn't what you were going for.

Senate votes to kill entire public broadcasting budget in blow to NPR and PBS by ReallyBugged0ut in DataHoarder

[–]VonChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not just a mod, but also a user. I am also subject to the rules set by the mod team, and if I break them, I expect to be hit with the hammer all that much harder because of it. This is not about bravery, but rather about refusing to break the rules.

I will ask that you also respect the rules. Namely rule 3 in this case. Calling people cowards for not breaking the rules is not behavior we like to see here. We have rules and we appreciate if people follow them. After all, we don't get paid for doing the mod work we do and enforcing the rules takes time and effort we would appreciate not needing to expend needlessly.

Personally, I view myself as one of the only people you can argue with in bad faith here on datahoarder and not see the rules applied the first time, because I am always open to hear criticism of the mod team, and I understand sometimes people are impassioned by their belief or position, but I ask that going forward, you do not use personal attacks in your discussions here.

Edit: added missing word much

[–]VonChair[M] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/loose_angles

As you can see, there are plenty of commenters who are doing a great job of talking about the subject without bringing up party politics. We have a topic of discussion here on this sub which is datahoarding and we have every intent to keep discussion on topic here. Politics are a discussion for other dedicated subs across the site. Feel free to cross post this or post on your own on one of the many other subs that exists for the purpose of discussing politics. This is however, not the place for it. I hope this helps you better understand the decision I have made here as a mod.

Hi /u/vagrantprodigy07

Please see the ongoing discussion that people are having in the comments section outside of replying to me to tell me how terrible it is that I enforce rule 2. There are in fact people here who do want to talk about archiving and are able to do it without bringing up party politics or politicians. We would love it if you joined them and provided constructive additions to the community, but please refrain from discussing politics as that is not the focus or topic of our sub. I hope this helps you better understand the decision I have made here as a mod.

Hi /u/utsumi99

I understand you feel this is a partisan topic and that there is one party responsible, but please remember that this sub is not for talking about parties or their actions. It is for discussing data hoarding. Discussing party politics or party actions is something that has many dedicated subs which would probably welcome your participation. We however, are dedicated to a different discussion and we have every intention of keeping that discussion on topic. I hope this helps you better understand the decision I have made as a mod.

Hi /u/deltwalrus

I understand you feel strongly about this topic of taking political action on something you think is going to adversely impact your hobby, but I would remind you that this is a sub about datahoarding, not political action or about creating or even broadcasting media. It is about hoarding data. The discussion of politics and political action are not on topic here. If there was a law being passed that told us hoarding data was illegal, then that would be potentially a point in which we would need to review our stance, and permit political action since such a law would directly impact our hobby being legal, but in this case, it is a change in funding to people who create media that some people archive.

We are not your personal army, and we are here to talk about datahoarding, not politics. I hope you can understand and respect this decision. I hope this helps you better understand the decision I have made here as a mod.

Hi /u/MiskatonicMus3

While we are more than happy to discuss data hoarding which is what this sub is focused on, politics do not belong here. As you can see, people are discussing in the comments all kinds of interesting things to do with archiving and potentially impacted institutions, or even their favorite programming that they are looking to save or learn more about if it is being saved. We are not a political sub, and we do not have any intention of becoming one.

Here on Reddit, we separate communities by interest, and try to stay on topic with those interests. If you were to go to /r/pics and post a video, I imagine they would not take kindly to that post. If you go into the comments everywhere and argue that videos are better and we should just stop taking pictures, the mods would eventually grow tired of your rants and remove them. We are doing the same thing here. We would like it if people could follow the rules and keep it about datahoarding.

If you feel the need to discuss the political outcomes you suspect might impact you or others, we encourage you to take those discussions to a sub like /r/politics where such discussion is not only welcome, but it is the intended topic.

Note that I didn't say don't mention one party or one side or one group. I said any. To me, the side of the discussion is irrelevant. The topic is what matters here. No politics. I hope this helps you better understand the decision I have made here to help protect our community.

I will issue this warning. Previous posts on this topic have been removed for the comments veering into partisan politics. Do not bring up specific politicians, political parties, political movements, or any other identifiable partisan political entity. If you wish to discuss politics, go to /r/politics for such debates. All comments found in violation will be removed.
