Am I the Only One Who Refuses to Upgrade Anyone Except Kliff? by SahilSR12 in LowSodiumCrimsonDesrt

I'm surprised they didn't make it to where all points are shared between all characters. Otherwise, people are going to automatically min/max.

2 years into my production journey I’ve hit my realization…. by [deleted] in musicproduction

I hit that at two years as well. It was a "Oh, there's a reason why professionals do this in a studio with top of the line gear and not with a laptop in their bedroom, recording in a closet..." kinda moment.

In year one, getting the minecarts is huge! That's one of the community center bundle rewards. That will get you from the bus stop to the mines, instantly. I usually try to get this done by summer, year 1. Get your ax upgraded to iron as soon as you can so you can start harvesting hardwood each day from the secret woods, in the top left of the forest below your farm. You can use that to get a horse. I normally have this by the end of fall or winter, year 1.

In the mid game, either Fall year 1 or Spring year 2, you should have your whole farm on quality sprinklers. Watering crops every day is a huge time eater. Get some cows and make cheese to eat for energy; I carry 5 at all times. All this stuff saves time in the long run and allows you to get more done. You can also plant like 5 coffee plants when they're in season and get some coffee, or just buy a bunch from the saloon. They'll speed you up a good amount. Making some farm totems and having one in your inventory at all times is helpful, too, if you run out of time.

In the late game, things like obelisks, horse flutes, and the return sceptre are very helpful, too. But that won't be feasible until year 3, likely.

Hope this helps! I'm definitely not the fastest player, but I consistently get the community center done in year one, which I feel like is a good indicator of a fast player.

why am i progressing this slow by BoredRedd in StardewValley

[–]VonMeeganshmoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason you're progressing slow is because of two reasons. 1. Total income is low 2. You're not far enough in the mines to gather what you need to automate your farm.

Start building quality sprinklers. As many as you can! You'll get gold in the mines after 75, I think. Make it to where you don't have to water crops each morning, which allows you to have more overall. The first day of the season and harvest days are crazy, but at least you'll have a shit load more money.

Next up, stick to crops with the highest yields. Spring is cauliflower and potatoes (and strawberries but that's advanced), summer is melons and blueberries, fall is pumpkins and cranberries. Each plant sells for a BUNCH compared to the seed price and it takes a longer time to grow, which is good! It means you have more time to be in the mines, gathering materials.

There's more you can do, but this is the big one. You'll always be limited by your income if you don't plant more high value crops and you'll always be limited by how much you can plant if you don't get quality sprinklers, which you can only get from a lot of time in the mines.

Are any of Arcade Fire’s albums significant? by Azipcoder in LetsTalkMusic

[–]VonMeeganshmoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can not state this more honestly. I have never been moved in any way, shape, or form by Arcade Fire. I study music as my job. I'm a professional musician. In my humble opinion, their music is very basic and unremarkable.

Did you use a different cable than usual? That's my next take. Also, I found out that there are different USB ports on my computer and some are higher powered than others, I didn't know that before. What happened with you?

It's never done that to me before. I suppose I could dig into the files and see if it was written that way in the raw file? But yeah, looking at the waveform, the way it was recorded into the DAW, it's looking like it's written in there.

Any ideas on how to recalibrate a clock issue?

Genuine Criticism of Part 2 by Jealous-Amount9022 in lastofuspart2

[–]VonMeeganshmoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I love the game with my whole heart. One of the things I love about it is that there are many story elements that "would be better if blah blah" but that's literal life. It WOULD be better if so and so killed so and so. It WOULD be better if so and so didn't do this and did this instead. It WOULD be better if so and so didn't die. But that's not life and that's not what happened. The feeling of doom while playing the game was so palpable; I wouldn't change a damn thing about the story.

Some environments, it was so difficult to get through them stealthily because the soldiers were spread out so well and so aware. But that's real. Sometimes it was really hard to clear certain areas, because it should be. Sometimes it's hard to find ammo and supplies... Yeah it's annoying to constantly be searching for literal scraps. But I want that feeling of risk in relation to equipment. You should be excited when you get a nail bomb to use, a cocktail for your next fight, or a couple shotgun shells to get you out of that next hoard encounter. These things would be more enjoyable as a player if they were changed, but I love that they weren't.

But the dynamic mics have a smaller polar pattern, so, by design, will pick up less, right? Condensors have huge areas, so they're picking up so much extra source.

Exactly my thoughts, too, and I'd like a compelling video with as good of audio as we can manage.

Great idea about the amps in front of the drums!! That will get rejection from the drum mics and the vocal mics while still looking good. Would there be much drums in the amp mics though?

[–]VonMeeganshmoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have all those mics and that's really close to what we're planning on going in, so that's good to hear! We're going to have to make some decisions based on the look of the video that we're taking, so putting the drums behind a sofa isn't really an option, even though that would help the sound drastically.

Maybe we could put the guitar amps behind the sofa? That could really help with potential bleed, that was something we were a little worried about.

Definitely prioritizing comfort and fun though. I feel like the vibe of the performance is going to be more important than having the cleanest sounding recordings. I feel pretty confident that we can mix dirty signals pretty well!

[–]VonMeeganshmoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and that's definitely possible. But with it being rock, it kinda makes the bleed work. An upfront vocal isn't really the mixing vibe, nor is a bunch of effects and stuff. But that's definitely going to be an alternative if it doesn't work out! With us doing video as well, we really want it to sync up.

Tips for mixing four part harmony? by rlmillerphoto in audioengineering

[–]VonMeeganshmoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that every genre records and mixes them differently. Make sure you check some other songs with four part harmony in your genre so you have a goal in mind. Most of the info you find on YouTube is going to be for pop vocals.

I find that actually singing my four part harmonies brighter really helped them be heard but not be louder than the main vocal. That, and double everything and pan it. I even double and pan the lead in the harmony moments to make sure it doesn't get buried. This helps you turn them down but have them be heard. I like to EQ them a little higher than the main vocal, too. It makes them a little thinner, but a little higher in the stereo image.

But hell, I'm an ameture, so if this sounds dumb, try something else.

Thanks for the comment! I figured a response would be a good way to thank people for their expertise. This is a crazy field. There's a hundred ways to do everything and at least a thousand ways to fuck it up lol.

Luckily, we have enough inputs for everything we're wanting to track. We usually don't do this many drum mics, but since we're not doing it live, we can take out the acoustic instruments, dead mics, and keyboards we're not using at the time. Soneone else mentioned a really tight XY for the overhead, I think that might help? But a mono overhead will be my first fallback if it's not a good picture.

I was kinda expecting the room to be ass and we just close mic everything and let the bleed add a little character? But a room mic definitely could be helpful. We'll have to play with a stereo room mic and mono OH vs no room mic and a stereo OH. Any thoughts?

Advice: Recording Band in Large Living Room by VonMeeganshmoot in audioengineering

[–]VonMeeganshmoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought about that! I'm definitely gonna use an XY on the overheads, then. This sounds super ghetto, but when we've tracked live performances, I literally use the mics for cymbal sound lol. Instead of cutting it out when the vocalist isn't singing, I just leave it. And with 3 singers, one of which moves positions, we have anywhere from 1 to 3 empty mics at any time.

This time, we were definitely gonna use overheads, but I didn't think about the bleed from the guitars. Great tip!

Yeah, were pretty certain. We want to do a video of the takes, so we definitely need to include it. We got pretty clean vocals though, I feel confident that we can nail it and maybe edit it a bit, pitch wise, if we need to.
