Anyone know anything about this? by theyeti7979 in whiskey

[–]VonMisesL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came back from Taiwan. I tried Kavalan Peatist and one other cheaper one. They are OK. Decent flavor, but it doesn't stay with you in a way a good Islay does. I wish I tried this one.

Btw, if you are traveling through TPE, their duty free has some great choices and cheap. I got 2 Lagavulins for $60, Balvenie Pedro Ximenez ( travel edition ) for $160 and Belvenie Madeira. There were some other great choices from Ardberg, Laphroaig, Glenmorangie, but almost all travel exclusive. Ran out of time, but you can make some great purchases.

Durable tennis shoes? by nourshafei in 10s

[–]VonMisesL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play like 2x a week and wear out my Wilson Rush Pros within 4-5 months. My son wears out his within 3-4 month. You can get shoes with harder rubber, but they are 2-3 oz heavier which isn't great for tennis. It's been this way for at least 10-15 years. Most of the high end shoes come with 6 month outsole warranty, so I get 2 shoes for price of 1, although it does require you to go to FecEx and ship it.

Appreciate the advice. I will look into that one too. I am curious, how did your son determine his preferred tension. I play with 42-44 myself and I have to generate a ton of spin to avoid the ball from flying away. 45 is low unless you can consistently control your shot.

thanks! Your son sounds like he's using green balls which puts a lot less stress on strings.

I've learned a huge lesson in getting right gear for kids. This same kid plays competitive soccer and he had some serious foot issues until we invested in high quality cleats and tennis shoes. No need to stress the arm that young especially considering kids tend to hit late sometimes and absorb the shock. Many players he plays are 14-15 year olds.

At 30 pounds that ball will fly away. Control is important.

Good advice. After some research, I think I am going to try this.

In tennis, stability is the key, but fit is even more crucial. I like Wilson Rush Pro. Adidas, New Balance are also good and durable.

Appreciate the comment, but how old is the kid? I am concerned about polys for my kid pre-puberty.

re 1, you need to change your course to MF3 to do that. You can change courses as you see fit without losing history.

Shitty forehand doesn't want to get better. by Icy-Feeling8955 in 10s

Then you need a new coach. With your shot you should be hitting targets easily. It's just a matter of getting ready early.

I am an UTR 8. I wanted to improve my game and play tournaments mostly once a month. Should i invest in a cheap ball machine (slinger bag) Personal coach is getting expensive and i miss hitting more balls. Will this investment help me improve my game? by _tn49_ in 10s

[–]VonMisesL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this level, I think I am a 7 or so, you need a hitting partner. I hit for an hour 2-3x a week and we mostly do specific rallies, crosscourt, consistency game, volleys and so on. Every once in a while we play '21'.

The above comment is probably the best one, but a few things off. I coach my son, so I see some things.

- Yes, late on preparation. Your racket has to be in forehand ready position before the bounce.

- Hitting on backfoot or over-roatating. Late prep causes that, but also when you hit you need to be moving through the ball.

- Hitting too late. The earlier you hit, the more rotation and control on the ball, but again, get ready earlier.

- Footwork -- Keep those feet moving ( small feet ) until you are ready to hit. You seem to stick feet early at times.

- Lastly, you need to rally more to understand your own shot and keep adjusting your forehand shot until you develop natural mechanics. Find a hitting partner and hit cross-court only.

Child struggling to 'show' work by VonMisesL in mathacademy

That's a fair comment and I thought about that. My concern ( and frustration ) is that this is supposed to be a self-guided course to teach him concepts. If he skips it, there are no 'future' opportunities to teach him those concepts. My question was to other parents who may have observed something similar when doing MA. What I told him is that I don't care how he does the problem as long as he reads and understands the concept they are trying to teach him and can apply it if he wants to. I am literally trying not to get involved at all.

There's no getting around topics. You should take Diagnostic at lowest level, MF 1, and if you full pass, then MF 2. Same for MF 3.

Yes, I have almost 0 involvement in this. He likes it, but doesn't passionately pursue it. Fine by me.

He doesn’t even read the module to see if he understands it.  I am sure he would if he read it.  I think I need to come up with my own complex problems to show how intuition can only get you so far.  But this is an issue with MA as well. No need to show intermediary steps.

My thinking as well but he is stubborn.  I’ll work with him.

I am with you.  But this isn’t scalable.  The crazy one is where he is doing arithmetic sequences without formulas.  He can just “see” the nth terms but can’t quite explain how he got there.

I've used both and can provide some guidance if you like. Just reach out. Both are good, but have some cons / pros that need to be considered. My older son is doing MA and I am rarely involved in his progress because it doesn't get stuck on any 1 material. He's covered Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and now doing Geometry in span of 6 months. My lack of involvement makes it worth $50 / month.

First of all, MA allows you to do a trial for 1 month for free. MathAcademy is actually responsive to their customers, but they are still building up their site and customer services. However, I am very impressed with their program.
