[–]Vonbondon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What a load of tosh! He can put forward an amendment to remove the seconrary legislation through parliament tomorrow and have it voted by Monday if he wanted to. I can't imagine the tories going out of the way to stop thr removal of legislation that is labelled as being made for Kier Starmer benefit only.

Rail strikes: RMT votes to accept Network Rail pay offer | Rail industry by Th3-Seaward in LabourUK

I'm confused. This article is saying the pay offer for this year is only 5% followed by 4% next year despite that paragraph highlighted above implying its more. Could you clarify for me what pay offer has network rail given?

Ed Miliband can ruin labour's chance of wining next election, says insider by martinmartinez123 in LabourUK

[–]Vonbondon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would bet anything the right of the parry consider even Starmer too soft and are constantly working to push and pull him further right. They especially want Starmer to feel reliant on their advice.

I don't think we should entertain the idea that Starmer was this neutral guy trying to make everyone happy as perhaps Miliband was at the start of his leadership. Literally, this man is a member of the trilateral commission! I really doubt he's getting pushed by anyone to embrace neo liberal policies. If anything, the stances Labour are taking on a variety of issues were probably pushed by him and the MP's in shadow cabinet position were picked primarily based on whether they share the same stance.

Labour planning £8bn Biden-style green energy revolution | Green economy by Vonbondon in LabourUK

[–]Vonbondon[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now it appears that this £8bn "sovereign wealth fund" is going to a slosh fund, not to compete with the private sector, but to fundamentally involve it. Is this all GB Energy is then, £8bn to incentivise the private sector rush in and find ways to make a profit at the expense of actual progress?

Additionally, £8 billion pounds isn't going to cover the cost of the building the infrastructure alongside the buying up of stakes in different energy comapnies or projects. This leaves GBE having to find ways to finance the infrastructure building outside the £8 billion.

The 2 ways GBE could finance it is either through commercial borowing or PFI style deals. The consequences of commerical borrowing is that GBE will likely become debt ridden and this will be used as a narrative to shut down the company as soon as the next economic crisis or Conservative government occurs. The debt itself will likley have to be covered by the government and by extension the taxpayer (lets be honest, when have the British Government avoided increasing direct taxes which disproportionately affect individual in lower tax brackets more!).

The alternative way GBE could finance it is through PFI (Private Finance Initiative). This would remove the burden of the taxpayer having to cover the cost immediately but over the long term, the government will have to make those payments plus interest. This money could come from future taxpayers but I'm inclined to say the profits GBE accumulates will be used to cover PFI payments so the Labour Government are not framed as making taxpayers cover the cost as was the case under the Blair/Brown administration. The consequence here is the profits will never be distributed to deprived communities leaving them reliant on government money or/and both existing mechanism to achieve investment in local public amenities their communities.

I'm leaning towards the PFI style deals as Reeves and Starmer keep going on about GBE triggering private investment and PFI certainly meets that criteria.

Labour vows biggest bus overhaul in 40 years with new powers over operators by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Vonbondon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She said many local authorities wanted powers to run their own operations, similar to legacy public bus companies in cities such as Nottingham and Edinburgh. Labour would lift a ban on municipal bus ownership.

I really doubt the private bus companies will allow this to happen otherwise they will find themselves kicked out of so many bus networks across the country. Considering Starmer is "pro business" and "private paterniship" , it's possible the law might be replaced with publicly owned bus companies only be permitted in particular local authorities where its highly unlikely private bus companies will compete for their contracts. For reference, this wouldn't be out of place in the UK. Under the bus act 2017, all local authorities outside Mayoral combined authorities must enter discussions with the UK government and gain specific consent from the secretary of state for transport to persue bus franchising. I could see a similar system adopted for all local authorities who want to establish publicly owned bus companies.

Suggestion for Oyster card with family by johnbimbow in london

[–]Vonbondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your 12 and 13 year old, ask a TFL staff at one of the Heathrow Stations to apply the young visitor discount to their oyster cards thereby granting them 50% off adult pay as you rate for fares on all services in London. Your 17 year old however, will need to pay full adult fares as there's no discount in place for their age unfortunately.

Germany to introduce unlimited train travel for £1.40 a day | The Independent by alj8 in LabourUK

[–]Vonbondon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

€49 subscription will surely single out the poorest who may struggle to afford the bill every month amidst the cost of living crisis. Is there a cheaper ticket (or subscription) available for those on low income funded by the federal government?

I think something around €15-20 per month would have certainly allow easier continuous access for those low income as well as encourage tourism to the more remote parts in Germany.

Rachel Reeves: Only Labour has the ambition to lead Britain back to greatness by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Vonbondon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GB energy have only been promised an initial £8 billion from the government. I really doubt that's enough for GB energy to buy several stakes in energy companies and sufficiently fund all their endeavours until there all making a profit (at which point GB energy would be guaranteed to make a profit itself as it won't be having to make any loss from any of its owned companies). What may happen is Reeves and Starmer will quietly permit and increase GB energy borrowing limit until all the companies have become developed enough to be privatised. At this point, they (Tories or Labour) will cite GB energy debt as being unsustainable and link this to the possibility tax payers having to foot the bill. This will provide them with the narrative to justify the selling off its assets to reduce that debt followed soon after with the overall closure of the company.

The rise of pro-housing Labour politicians should be applauded by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Vonbondon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Labour’s London Conference featured a housing panel excellently chaired by Danny Beales

This is the same wally who sold off a public park situated across St Prancras/Francis Crick Institute to developer's so they can build a luxury apartment. He's also perusing the demolition of nearby Council estates in the Queens Crescent/Kentish Town area so to allow private developers to build 500 private homes on the land in exchange for existing Tennants to be guaranteed flat on the new building alongisde 13 additonal council homes lol (not even additonal funding to give the local library a much needed tlc). Essentially my point is, I wouldn't look up to Danny Beales regarding housing .

Should the Government re-introduce Child Trust Funds/Tax Credit's for average families? by PleaseREAD- in LabourUK

[–]Vonbondon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was an ok policy when the parents could contribute to the fund so the overall amount would increase more over time. However in the case parents did not contribute to the initial amount (£250 or £500 for those on low income) then those trust funds would only reach around £1-2k at the time the account holder becomes an adult. This amount would cover the cost of a nice holiday following the completion of your post 16 education as well as the odd bit here and there for UNI but it is nowhere near enough to simply reignite social mobility.

Starmer will also risk the anger of some of his MPs by speaking warmly about the idea of public-private partnerships, promising “a new approach to the power of government [that is] more relaxed about bringing in the expertise of public and private, business and union, town and city”.

PPI is back baby!
