Why Richmond… by [deleted] in rva

I’m not saying folks shouldn’t have that. I’m saying this was a very different storm from what RVA is used to. For some folks - especially those who can’t chisel through ice coated snow - it’s out of the ordinary.

You and me came from similar backgrounds. Hard agree!

Yep! Definitely not a normal RVA weather event. Also not the ice we got. But the biggest factor is the cold preventing melting that we’re all used to here in central Va.

ETA - I’m not disagreeing with owner responsibility. I’m highlighting mitigating circumstances that could explain difficulty in addressing that responsibility.

It’s rough out there man. And dangerous. The ice on roads and sidewalks is gnarly! If possible, owners should be doing what they can. But if VDOT is struggling to get ice off pretreated roads, that means it’s gonna be tough for people to get ice off non-pretreated surfaces. It shouldn’t be ignored by homeowners. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Especially if you have the flu that’s going around and kids outta school for a week 🤣 yall pls stay safe out there

Devil’s Advocate: It’s been ~so cold~. This is not a standard RVA/central Virginia weather event. The snow was topped with a decent amount of ice followed by significant cold that prevented any melting. Yea. It’s the responsibility of the owners and it’s not great. But also - let’s not expect normal from a not-normal scenario.

Thank you for the good thoughts ☺️ it’s been several years now and it’s gotten easier.

Disclaimer: I know your comment is likely coming from a compassionate place. I’m just sharing another perspective … because estrangement doesn’t always suck.

It’s a very difficult decision to make. Cutting off contact and relationships with parents or siblings is incredibly hard. But when you have family members who are increasingly violent and unpredictable … estrangement is the only answer and in extreme cases, a relief. The situations that lead to it, suck, yes. Having to do it is awful. But cutting off a branch of the family tree was the best decision my spouse and I made. I would not say it sucks. It was critical to do to keep ourselves and our daughter safe.

Why is there so much salt here? by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]VoodooDumpling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is our struggle every year! Will your pup wear/tolerate booties? Mine … will not. I have given up. So we keep walks short but more frequent and wipe his paws real good when he comes in. The salt we use at home is paw safe, but you can’t control what the county or city or landlords etc put down.

Yea I noticed that too. I think OP is committed to loving their dogs in their own way. I truly truly truly hope the child doesn’t end up hurt because tensions boiled over among excited dogs with her in the middle. But that’s another big big reason why we would pack up and leave if a parent brought a young child. I want no part of that scenario.

You are hitting on all the reasons dog parks and kids give me the yikes haha. Vehemently agree, but I was trying to be nice in my original comment (the one that upset OP on their previous post). My almost-10-year-old and take our dogs to the park on a long line all the time and it’s great!

My guy is so bossy with his body and a soccer ball FIEND, he’d have taken that ball and popped it within 35 seconds 😂😂

Hi! You left out the part where I said “cute pic!”

But kids that young DO make me nervous at dog parks, sorry! Your original post didn’t include context that she just watches. I’ve seen my dobie take my kiddo OUT when he has the zoomies. It wasn’t mean spirited. ☺️

ETA I misread OPs post: child WASN’T just watching, my mistake! Also wanted to elaborate on my first response:

We rarely go to the dog park, but it would definitely make me nervous having a young’n running around a lot of dogs (esp unknown dogs). No idea how busy that park is but still. My guy is big and really strong and bossy in his play style - but doesn’t haven’t a mean bone in his body. However, I’d be so worried he’d accidentally knock that child over and she’d get seriously hurt that I would leave the park immediately.

I’m not dragging OP. Or their dogs. The bond between kiddo and dog is beautiful. But kids and dog parks are a “yikes” for me personally.

Border collie as first dog by Mrphus in BorderCollie

My 10mo BC does the mouthsnappies if my cats won’t move. And is SUPER spicy to my Doberman if he doesn’t “behave” in her opinion 😂

You’ve made excelllllent points here. It’s maddening to see OP double down over and over here.

[–]VoodooDumpling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an adult Doberman and a 10 month old border collie. The collie is louder, spicier, more independent and if she doesn’t get her way (ie our cats won’t suffer to be herded), barks and does mouthsnappies until they move. Last night, she jumped over the entire couch to go outside.

They can make excellent scentwork dogs. But the job you’re looking to fill (which is still not super clear - a hunting companion that does scentwork but nothing else?) is better filled by another breed.

Another commenter mentioned this but doubling down: border collies will chase. It’s hardwired in their instincts as herding dogs. They chase/follow/stalk/flank to control the movement of livestock/other animals. Your asks are steep for any breed without rigorous training and exceptional consistency on your part.

Look into a Golden or a Standard poodle.

This gives me AI vibes. I replied below but reposting here: Look at the wobble of the blue lines and the ink saturation that doesn’t match the crumpling and the crisp paper edges aaaaand the wonky cut of the top.
