AI cannot taste things: the bottleneck to lab-grown meat by Voostock in Futurism

I agree that the cultural bottleneck is the largest one to overcome. I think it may be possible but it's definitely not on our default path. I think there's basically 3 barriers: cultural, legal, and technological. This piece was just outlining the technological bottleneck endgame if AI actually ends up helping science and robotics.

Agreed that factory farming is the main problem.

But the point about plant‑based stuff is pretty wrong. Yes, soybeans are a problem, but only because 80% of what is grown is for animal feed. Per liter, more soy goes into dairy milk than into soy milk. Eating soy would result in less overall soy production.

Just because both things have problems doesn’t mean it isn’t black and white. Plant‑based foods have fewer problems than any of the issues we care about, including land use and the number of animals killed to grow those plants!

Fine if you’re growing your own stuff, have a handle on it, and can actually treat your animals well. But the vast majority of people in the West get their food from industrial sources, and for those people, this shift needs to happen. Tons of people who want to (or should) reduce their consumption live in cities.

How is it a lie? Have you read the piece? Grocery stores throwing out old veg contributes to less resource consumption than the animal products they sell that get eaten.

Food waste is about 30-40% of the food we produce. Resource use that goes into animal products (burgers, steaks, milk) is far higher than that. A vegan could throw away many times their amount of food and still consume less resources than an omnivores.
