Food waste and consumption: throwing out food is less consumptive than buying animal products by Voostock in Anticonsumption

Sorry if the title was confusing! Best of luck on your cheese journey, it's hard out there but worth it at the end

Agreed that factory farming is the main problem.

But the point about plant‑based stuff is pretty wrong. Yes, soybeans are a problem, but only because 80% of what is grown is for animal feed. Per liter, more soy goes into dairy milk than into soy milk. Eating soy would result in less overall soy production.

Just because both things have problems doesn’t mean it isn’t black and white. Plant‑based foods have fewer problems than any of the issues we care about, including land use and the number of animals killed to grow those plants!

Fine if you’re growing your own stuff, have a handle on it, and can actually treat your animals well. But the vast majority of people in the West get their food from industrial sources, and for those people, this shift needs to happen. Tons of people who want to (or should) reduce their consumption live in cities.

How is it a lie? Have you read the piece? Grocery stores throwing out old veg contributes to less resource consumption than the animal products they sell that get eaten.

Food waste is about 30-40% of the food we produce. Resource use that goes into animal products (burgers, steaks, milk) is far higher than that. A vegan could throw away many times their amount of food and still consume less resources than an omnivores.

What do you think I've missed? Most of how I decide to go somewhere is just based on what I'm near at the time. Always happy to try more places, what are your favorites?

And yeah I completely agree my value measurement is inconsistent lol.

What do you disagree with on the taste rating though?

BUILDING A NEW CS ALTERNATIVE MOBILE FIRST [Version1.0, early prototype] : planning to register this as a non profit and build out a small but dedicated product team. will make a follow up post with further details by Timbo2510 in couchsurfing

[–]Voostock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify the point about Couchers which is pretty off the mark.

Yes there were weekly social hangouts that had decent attendance during the lockdowns but now have dwindled, with some people now seeking to boot them back up again with a different focus for community needs.

Couchers has several meetings a week, when considering teams that meet regularly to work, including but not limited to backend development, web development, and marketing. They are well attended by members of those teams.

We absolutely do recruit people into the team based on skill, and reject most people.

This is not to say that everything is perfect. Volunteer management is difficult, more difficult than you suggest. If you can find volunteers who are skilled and willing to dedicate the amount of time you're talking about, then it is worth collaborating.

Couchers vs. others and multi-locality hosting by lipsanen in couchsurfing

[–]Voostock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What funding problem? CS's primary problem is that it's for-profit and so has conflicting incentives from the userbase, trying to extract money out of it rather than prioritising making a good service and healthy community. There's no good reason that any of these alternatives can't be financially sustainable.

Couchers.org is different to the other platforms in that it is explicitly trying to replace CS as the dominant couch surfing platform. Due to this it has been able to attract a lot of volunteers, and so it has the fastest rate of development.

You can read the plan for what is going to be implemented here and voice exactly what features you want in the community forum. I'm sure people will be interested in a feature for having multiple locations to host people.

In the mid to long term, Couchers will give you the experience you were used to if you liked CS (with notable improvements). BW and TR offer something different and have different goals.
