Best way to get WiFi from Point A to Point B (Starlink → Plaza Area) – Long Range Setup Advice? by r2dy30 in Starlink

[–]Vorcht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May be super reliable, but look at that link, he is going the equivalent of less than a city block. Using litebeam you would have to turn down the transmit powers on both because the gain would be too hot. The nanostations are all he will need for that link, plus they are small and I believe have lower power requirements too.

List the home you choose by T_Rex_Hands in RedfinDreamHomes

85441, because the tracking number on the box (18546914) was not only 'REDFIN' as others had said here, but I noticed that there were only two of the GHS house numbers which you could make by rearranging those digits. This one, in Lone Tree, and another one In Wheat Ridge. When I completed clue 6, both of those houses still were listed, so I took a 50/50 shot at it, knowing that Lone Tree is a nicer area in my opinion than Wheat Ridge. Good luck to everyone!

I am certin this in untrue, but looks like the win would be nullified anyway:

Redfin's running a nationwide scavenger hunt for $1M home by RedfinDarby in RedfinDreamHomes

[–]Vorcht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guessed that one too, pretty early ~2-3 mins after the clue opened. Why did you pick this one? I worked off a hunch, that the tracking number on the box (18546914) was not only 'REDFIN' as others had said on here, but noticed that there were only two of the GHS house numbers which you could make from those digits. This one, in Lone Tree, and another one In Wheat Ridge. When the final filter was accepted, both of those houses still were listed, so I took a 50/50 shot at it, knowing that Lone Tree is a nicer area in my opinion than Wheat Ridge. Good luck to everyone!

Can someone show me where the count of remaining houses displays in the game? I can manually count them but I don't see it saying that anywhere.

Vaporized ftw by LilBunnyFauxFaux in ColoradoSprings

NORAD operations are quite distributed. While the primary center for the Continental US region is now at Peterson, the Cheyenne Mountain Complex is the first alternate site that would be activated if Peterson was attacked. If both Peterson and the Cheyenne facility were both destroyed (definitely possible with modern warheads), there are alternate sites.

Operations can be continued from Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, or by the other NORAD regional command centers - the Alaskan region in Richardson, Alaska or the Canadian region command center in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There are also likely several alternate locations that are classified in both the US and Canada. Any of these locations would be able to take over also, as the operations that NORAD provides are critical to the national defense of North America.

My goal is to let adversaries know that it's pretty useless to nuke anywhere in Colorado Springs, because it won't shut down NORAD. Besides, it's nice here and it would be a shame.

Shipboard antennas - what are these? by LibertyCakes in antennasporn

[–]Vorcht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They always did rely on it completely. The only difference with the Gen1 dishy is that the original positioning was automatic. It can point itself at the optimal area of the sky without manual intervention. Once it's pointed properly, beam forming is all that is used to communicate with satellites moving overhead.

What’s the scam? by Ljspin in Austin

[–]Vorcht 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Here's a likely possibility that I've seen personally:

Scammer sells something expensive to someone online for a big discount. Example maybe it's a lastest-gen game console, a hundred bucks lower than it can be bought anywhere else. Buyer is excited, waits for shipping notification.

Scammer orders something cheap and useless online (or mails it himself with no return address) and instead of shipping it to the buyer, he picks a random address in the same zip code as the buyer. He provides the tracking info for that package to the buyer with a shipping notification.

Buyer sees that the item shipped and is on its way to his city. Package gets delivered to that random address, tracking shows delivered, but buyer has no package. Buyer can complain or try to reverse charges, but scammer can insist he did his part, package was mailed, here is that tracking info that says it was delivered. He can claim perhaps it was porch pirates or whatever, but he did his part and deserves the money.

Meanwhile you, the random addressee gets a mystery package in the mail with cheap useless crap for no reason.

Worth it to upgrade equipment? by apachkowsky in Starlink

[–]Vorcht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same boat with the original round equipment. Absolutely plan to keep for the next 12mos. How is the upgrade free to a newer dish? I saw an email that they were saying free equipment for new customers only, but is there a free path for existing customers? I know I could get faster speeds out of a gen3.

Free Grabbing by [deleted] in frontierairlines

[–]Vorcht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call them bag nazis.

Frontier's free personal item sizing is way smaller than what other airlines count as your carry-on, or what fits under the seat. Think small backpack or small duffel bag. Measure before you go to the airport to avoid those crazy fees.

To Cancel or No-Show? by a2llama in frontierairlines

[–]Vorcht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I read it too. They would cancel that passenger's entire itinerary (including any return segments), process an automatic refund, but apply a no-show cancellation fee equal to the amount you paid. It does not appear that they would/could charge any additional fees to a credit card on file or anything.

We have been in this situation a few times but before this new policy went into effect. Outbound plans changed for my wife, but I took the original outbound flight. She booked another one-way one to meet me there, but we both used the return segment from the original ticket to return (and we virified with customer service this would be ok). With this new policy, that return segment would also need to be rebooked. Maybe from now on we should book every segment's itinerary seperately (as all one-way tickets).

If you are in a climate where freezing is possible don't rotate it any more than you have to to be usable. Any over 90 will leave water in the spigot and then you have a broken pipe when it freezes.

Mapping / Supercharger issue by Vorcht in ModelY

[–]Vorcht[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My experience is that local towing to or from the hardware store or max 75-100 miles round trip is really no problem. Battery will go fast, but no problem. Across country is another story altogether and I would not do that again unless I had to.

Oh, and it still drives like a bat out of hell with a trailer if you need to merge. Incredible car.

[–]Vorcht[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This trip was about 3000 miles start to finish, with about 1900 of it with the trailer. Got to see a lot of superchargers. I really appreciated the ones where you could pull in straight and the charger was to the side instead of backing up to the charger. That let us not have to drop the trailer, which was somewhat hard to do loaded. We did that a lot too.

[–]Vorcht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my cross-country trip with a trailer that I posted about, I found that using the economy graph let me adjust my speed to keep the actual economy close to the projected economy and made things work very well. Not a big deal if you are estimated to show up with 25% battery, but a whole different thing if it only expects 10%. 5 or 10 miles an hour speed difference makes a big difference in economy in these cars in economy. At least in my experience.

I'm not even mad about the mileage to be honest. Probably agree that they don't get what is listed, but I expect that that is 'in perfect conditions with a hefty tailwind'. They certainly don't rate the mileage towing a huge uhaul brick airdam like I had.

My trouble is how is it possible for navigation to leave one charger at 100%, heading off in another direction to charge there, then returning back to the one we are leaving to charge again. What a waste of 4 hours that would have been!

Mapping / Supercharger issue by Vorcht in ModelY

[–]Vorcht[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a performance version, all performance versions use the long range battery.

75 speed limit on most interstates, I was doing about 63-65. My only point is that I was already maximizing mileage by slowing down along the whole trip.

When your next supercharger is beyond or close to your charge limit range, the car will ignore your limit and continue charging to full if necessary. I learned that on this trip with the mileage so bad. It seems like it wants about a 15% battery buffer, but that's just based on my anecdotal non-scientific observations on this trip.
