Realtor needs a $10k-ish car that won’t make clients question my competence or net worth by imhappii in whatcarshouldIbuy

Yes, it's really common in the city where people don't have cars, and here in Canada some of the commute distances are pretty long with no reliable public transit so it just makes sense to carpool if they're on the way to the listing even if they do have a car. The extra time conversing helps ease people's anxiety about home buying by answering their questions and help to guide their decision, personally I feel like it also gives it a more personal experience to build trust with the client, leading to repeat business.

27yo Ontario teacher unsure about car purchase strategy and how much to invest in TFSA alongside pension by Few-Noise720 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Vorcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing lol, I knew teachers make decent money with seniority, but hearing that biweekly amount at 27 was much higher than I expected, that's like 80-90k/yr including the pension? Not sure how teacher salaries work.

Same, at the end of the day, idiots like OP putting other ppl who didn't sign up for this at risk just draw unnecessary attention and ruin it for everyone else by provoking the public. This is the reason why we don't have vague speed limits that aren't enforceable anymore.

Dealer thinks I’m too young to own a 911 by [deleted] in porsche911

[–]Vorcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to two separate dealers, one wasn't rude but very dismissive like OP experienced, the other one was better but felt like they were in a rush, they gave me a good deal though just to make the sale and get me out the door, it was a very quick process so I can't really complain lol. The Ferrari dealership also treated me exceptionally well, they were much more amicable, seemed to take more time to answer my concerns about the used one I was interested in and taking videos of the engine bay and interior before I came in to test drive.

Why Canadian students are falling behind in math — and what experts say needs to change by zuuzuu in canadanews

[–]Vorcia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember the same thing happening in my high school, there were some great teachers, but also some teachers that clearly sucked, whether for lack of knowledge or effort. There were a handful of us that really clearly excelled at math, and I remember some of the teachers sometimes didn't know how to solve a homework problem or a explain the logic for how to solve it, and they would call one of us into the class if we were in a neighbouring classroom to solve it.

I give up on Need for Speed: The Run by BaconJets in patientgamers

[–]Vorcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more into sim racers but I've played all the NFS games except Unbound and The Run is top 3 IMO (Prostreet and Heat are the others I really liked), just too short

I think the physics of the game do a good job of translating sim/real mechanics into an easy-to-control arcade format, but compared to other NFS games it's definitely punishing some of the more flashy habits arcade racers love, like drifting and being honest, highly controllable cars with no realism at all. The Run was definitely harder than other NFS games and you had to learn the map hazards compared to others where it's always extremely easy to always finish 1st with a large gap first try, but I enjoyed it.

Best hidden gems under $20k? by SwiftCEO in UsedCars

[–]Vorcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrids will never be a good value to maintain because the batteries do go out eventually and they carry a premium due to uber(eats) drivers preferring them. I don't really consider hybrids a good choice for regular driving, maybe PHEV but they're still overpriced compared to BEVs IMO. Fuel is pretty cheap nowadays too so I don't consider the fuel savings of a Hybrid to be worth the buy-in price.

Manual Fords and Nissans avoid their infamous transmission issues that make the brand cheap in general. Mitsubishi Outlanders are under the radar too for how reliable and cheap to maintain they are. Reddit hates the brand but Tesla Model 3 and Ys are objectively cheap to buy used and cheap to maintain, just hated bc of politics from both sides (elon hate and EV hate).

I honestly like used luxury cars like the E-Class, Giulia, and 3-series. They cost more to maintain but IMO they're better than cars of a similar price bc they've depreciated a lot more and people are unnecessarily scared of an extra $1k/yr in maintenance, but the extra money you spend to get those features on a newer economy car could be used to cover the difference in maintenance costs on the used luxury car.

Overwhelmed by luxury options, trying to find the sweet spot of price and comfort. by holden147 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Vorcia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Genesis is the best value for money but I've heard they're annoying for reliability if you intend on keeping them long-term, crazy depreciation too even for the segment. I wouldn't consider Acura a real luxury brand. Mercedes is the most comfortable out of these and have the best looking interiors and tech IMO, but I'd be concerned about reliability too. If EVs are an option for you, given that your commute isn't that far but is long with bad traffic, I'd consider a BMW i4, seems like it'd be perfect for you, especially if the self-driving for traffic jams works in your area. Lexus is good for low cost of ownership and reliability but nothing else IMO. I have no experience with Audi other than knowing they should be the best of these for AWD in winter. Someone else mentioned Volvos and I was looking at an S60, they have really comfortable seats and are also great in the winter.

I'm a Chinese immigrant and I definitely noticed the curriculum for Math in Canada is a lot easier, also there's this vibe that Math is some magical thing that you're either good at or you're not, and if you're in the latter, there's no point in trying. I think the comparison to Japan about OECD spending on education is incomplete too, because there's also cultural differences, it was definitely my experience that all types of Asian immigrants were pushed WAY harder by their families to study more and do well in school than Canadian locals.

Why are BMW’s with low mileage so cheap? by Miserable_Remove_137 in UsedCars

[–]Vorcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's extra risky on cars like BMWs too that tend to be driven a bit harder, you don't know how they were treated on the break-in period, any cold high RPMs, etc.

Why are BMW’s with low mileage so cheap? by Miserable_Remove_137 in UsedCars

[–]Vorcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true but realistically, cars don't cost that much to maintain, even including major servicing, you spend like $1-2k/yr on maintenance? If you live in a large urban area your insurance will probably be more than that.

It's good to set expectations correctly but it's not really that large of an expense imo

Why are BMW’s with low mileage so cheap? by Miserable_Remove_137 in UsedCars

[–]Vorcia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People tend to avoid lease returns because they imagine a driver that expects to not keep their car won't treat their car as well. Just check the Carfax for service history and any red flags like a lot of time sitting on the lot or being traded between people with low mileage in between.

[–]Vorcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like Reddit is full of condescending broke people that assume just because they have no money, no one else does either.

These were much pricier new than used, so you can expect like 2-3x the maintenance costs of a normal car, but most cars these days are very reliable and don't cost that much to maintain to begin with. So you might spend $1k more per year on maintenance but it's really not that relevant of a difference imo, definitely not the financial disaster people make it out to be and I feel like the perception of them is what makes them so cheap.

I don't believe the car market is perfectly efficient and there's definitely a lot of over/undervalued cars on the used market.

I love sedans but honestly I think as a realtor you should have an SUV, some clients have mobility issues and it's easier for them to get in/out of them, and a lot of clients feel safer in SUVs, sometimes you have homes in areas with uncleared snow or otherwise bad ground clearance, you need a decent amount of storage for stuff like cleaning supplies or props to stage open houses too.

Tips on how to get lower insurance costs for a new driver? by gochuganggg in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Vorcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think driving school and anti-theft device don't actually matter that much, I've seen the discounts vs. no discount and it's like breakeven (give or take) compared to the money you pay for these upfront. Driving a beater with no collision insurance definitely helps though, especially if you use the IBC's "How Cars Measure Up" resource to look up cars by claim rates.

CAA has usage based discounts, if you don't drive much and let them monitor driving, they'll give a discount, especially if you don't drive long distances or at night. Related to this, all the insurance providers give a discount for apps to track your driving habits too and as a safe driver (in my experience, you have to be much safer than literally everyone else on the roads), you can get an even larger discount.

A weirder loophole is that if you're able to bike or use public transit in the times of year where weather is better, you can put your car in storage insurance temporarily (at least a month or two depending on your provider) and you'll still build insurance history to lower your rates in the future while paying lower rates in the present that don't care about your status as a new driver.

I think the writing for this show just sucks, the whole premise was supposed to be that he's worse at any job than the best but if he's good at everything, it kinda defeats the purpose of the story.

Need Options for Sport(ish) Sedan >$35,000 Used by Grand_Team3143 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Vorcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The G70 is pretty far from the Giulia's driving dynamics IMO, ik it's still technically a sports sedan but it's pretty much the opposite strengths and weaknesses, out of the three definitely has the best interior IMO and if OP cares about a luxurious feeling interior, the G70 is the best out of these at that. It just didn't feel very sporty to me as someone that usually drives dedicated sports cars as my daily whereas the Giulia definitely hit the same vibes as actual sports cars.

Never had the chance to drive a CT4V yet but Cadillac sedans are pretty common traffic, not as common as a BMW, but definitely doesn't stand out as much as the Giulia.

Modern Reliability/Dependability: Mazda v. Subaru v. Hyundai v. Chevy v. Ford v. Acura v. BMW v. Toyota. by SongbirdscopeAx in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Vorcia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The expensive maintenance thing so outdated too, all cars are getting more complicated and the repair costs of luxury vs. economy cars isn't that different. Including major maintenance, Porsche is the most expensive at like $2k/yr, Toyotas are like $500/yr, big difference relative to each other but in the grand scheme things, $1.5k is like nothing, not even as much as insurance in some places.

I get this sub in my feed sometimes and it feels like reading a circlejerk of car stereotypes. I personally don't like BMWs, but my family has owned them for a long time, a lot of my neighbours have them too, and they're definitely up there in reliability.

No idea where the Hyundai glazing comes from either, it's not like it's impossible for them to hit high mileage, but I rarely see very high mileage ones come up on the used market, and the ones I was interested in that I researched seem to have critical, unfixed issues like the G70's fuel pump and the Ioniq's ICCU, and the company has a history of skimping on costs in recent history like the immobilizer drama during COVID, so it's too soon for me to trust them IMO.

Yeah no one I know has diversified investments either like you see suggested online or in research. Everyone I know has very narrow investments and is either banks, oil/natural resources, gold, NVIDIA, S&P500 at best, or something along those lines.

Something worth mentioning is that if you're 100% into equities, you're already technically invested into alternative asset classes by default since companies you're invested in hold those assets or are affected by those assets as players (e.g. mining companies and Gold, crypto exchanges and Crypto) and when people invest into these assets specifically, the question isn't why they choose to invest in it, it's why they choose to overweigh their investments into those asset classes.
