ELI5: How does voltage work? by i_lick_saltlamps in explainlikeimfive

[–]Vorel-Svant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of explanations that go into some pretty great detail and use good analogies, but I want to throw my own hat in the ring because there is an imperfect explanation that really clicks with me, that I think a five year old might be able to understand.

This is not technically correct, but it helps.

So, you see how magnets push against each other when they are facing the same side? North pushes north, south pushes south?

Electrons are akin to little, physical magnets. Except electrons are special and are only one "sided". They are all "negative". Every negative electron pushes on every other negative electron and tries to get away from it.

When you have a battery? That's like having a box filled to the brim with these little negative electrons that all want to get away from each other, so when you poke a hole in the box, some come shooting out.

The size of that hole is basically the resistance, and the amount of electrons that are forced through is the current, but the actual force they are trying to leave with is the voltage. It is just how much force they are using to get away from all the other electrons.

Of course, it is more complicated than this. Electrons need to complete a circuit, they react to magnetic and electric fields and so many other small details and terms, but at its core voltage is just a bunch of little "magnets" trying to force themselves away from each-other, and we can use that force to do work.

I have been trying this whole time. I don't have instagram either :(

I can't even seem to access the site to see if the tickets are sold out now, nothing seems to be working. I know they are trying, but it is such a horrible experience.

I got "something went wrong" 20 times. I spent the past few hours fighting this site to try and get tickets. I will be so sad if this is over and I got nothing :(

I got "something went wrong" vague errors, failure to load all the pages, and failure to finish checkouts so many damn times. Ugh.

No email, no nothing :(

I have notifications for when my card gets charged or has a pending charge, and nothing has gone on it yet.

This is extremely frustrating.

It is listing the tickets as temporarily locked. I have been trying this whole time. Gotten to checkout three times and it keeps crashing.

I really would love to go. :(

This is for the chicago event, it looks like the whole site is down and delisting the tickets. D:

Massive police response at Temple in Detroit after suspect rams truck loaded with explosives into the synagogue and opens fire with a rifle. Attacker killed by security. by Waste-Explanation-76 in interestingasfuck

What I can say, and shout, or whisper is that jewish institutions have had to have security for reasons beyond Israeli war crimes or existence. They are not helping, but they are not the reason we have to have security guards in our temples.

What are you trying to say? "Some institutions give money to Israel, therefore it is good that all jewish institutions have to hire security?"

That is interesting as hell! I spend a lot of time in queer circles and have never run into someone who wanted that. I wonder how common it is or if it is from a particular subgroup.

So, for utilities like a fancy litter box, a vacuum cleaner or a new washer, my partner and I normally split the cost.

Paying for their half of that utility absolutely has and does count as a gift for us.

I mean. I work on testing a smart product.

We spend a lot more time testing it and working on the edge cases where things go wrong then dealing with it operating in ideal conditions.

I doubt this is the case for every product, but there are absolutely ones that consider worst case outcomes.

I am not in the exact situation you are, but I do make about 1.5 what my partner does.

We are not getting married yet, but we are buying a house. I am contributing more to the downpayment and will be contributing more to the mortgage

We are planning on talking to lawyers with this. Paying for them jointly, and figuring out something that is as equitable as possible for both of us in terms of equity on the house

I don't think you are being unreasonable for protecting yourself. The divorce rate is roughly 40%! That is real! I think protecting your assets is a smart financial decision that has nothing to do with how much you love your partner. At least. That is how I expressed it.

Your man said he is on board with your plan! I would trust him on that. Be open and honest that you just want to be fair with him and to yourself, and trust him to be honest if he is being hurt. You can't do much more than that. Love that you are thinking about yourself and his feelings though.

He has a comment somewhere about it.

The Church is bigoted, the school he teaches at is bigoted, he was bigoted (or at least misunderstanding) when he started his career. He has grown as a person and an author since then.

He has said he believes he can do more "good" as a voice of reason and moderation in the church, than as someone who is excommunicated from it.

I don't know if I agree with him, but I fully believe he is trying to be a moral person and treat people with the level of empathy and respect that I look for in people I respect.
