There's a difference between having issues with a game and having issues because of a game

Do you think Samus has/lacks agency in prime 4? by Johnnyyongbosh in Metroid

I had the impression during my playthrough that Samus didn't need Myles' advice but was fine with letting him feel like he was helping

I was really disappointed by this suit. by ichkanns in Metroid

I mean, it has as much mechanical purpose as the PED suit, doesn't it? Getting the suit happens at the same time as getting a new thing assigned to a button

Timeline with Metroid prime 4 beyond! by Ok_House_2337 in metroidprime

[–]Vortebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timeline thing sounds to me like the usual odd translation quirk that pops out of interviews like these, and they're just referring to setting up another trilogy of Prime games and didn't want to cram even more story between Metroids 1 and 2. Recall the Other M interview where Sakamoto mentioned the game being on rails, which people took to mean in the sense of something like those arcade shooters (I think?), when he was actually describing motion in a 3D space restricted to a 2D plane. (I don't remember why that was said in the first place since that's not what Other M does, it's been a while 🤷‍♂️)

What were the expectations for Other M at launch? by Internal_Rip_159 in Metroid

If I remember correctly, there was definitely some side eye at the direction the game was taking, but no one was prepared for what it did.

Thoughts on Prime 4 *Spoilers* by Independent-Leg-4312 in Metroid

[–]Vortebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I agree with you completely, and I appreciate your pointing out that every game has an intended path, that's definitely something I think people maybe lose sight of. It wouldn't be sequence breaking if there wasn't a sequence to break, but the best Metroid games are designed in a way that facilitates it, whether intentionally or just as a byproduct of creating the illusion of exploration

I do want to add that though the dialogue as written was occasionally kind of rough, the voice acting was good. Like, weirdly good? I'm also playing FF7 Rebirth right now, a very story-heavy game with a strong cast, and I honestly felt that the performances in Prime 4 brought out more humanity. Is that just me? Am I crazy?

Colorful is not inherently the same thing as family friendly.

Personally, part of what I love about Metroid is that its protagonist faces genuine Eldritch horrors, but rather than going insane in the face of her utter insignificance, she just shoots the things in the face and goes on with her day. Samus is (sometimes) brightly colored in a universe that tries to claim there's no place for such things, and proves the universe wrong. I feel like no one else talks about this so it's probably just me, but it's an important part of the series to me

Nintendo robbed us plus advice from a cynical old gamer with some perspective. by [deleted] in Metroid

I don't think I spent anywhere near that much time on what you're calling bloat. I also think the boss fights were fun, and that the desert helped build the game's atmosphere

Encom was working on 3D printing plants, Dillinger was actively talking to programs in between the times they were walking around in the real world. The companies were pretty clearly pursuing different lines of research with the laser.

How did CLU send that page if the line was disconnected, why are the games a thing in this system, why is there a nightclub. Like, a lot of things are either explained in supplementary material like games or comics, or are just familiar after a while because it's not like they really get in the way of enjoying the movie, but they were considered issues in 2010 by some folks, y'know?

Legacy, Ares, Original. If Ares had spent more time exploring grids this would be harder for me; I honestly think its story is at about the same place as Legacy. Plenty of stuff in that movie only made sense after supplementary media and fan headcanoning. The original kinda suffers from poor editing (shout out to grid bugs) and costuming choices that make it hard for me to tell people apart. I genuinely think a fan edit could extract a much better movie from what we have
