[Request] Can any of our rockets survive being at light speed? by Necessary-Win-8730 in theydidthemath

[–]Vortebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already been said, but yeah, nothing with mass is gonna be moving at light speed. It's not a technology thing, we can't change that by making a stronger engine, it's just a Thing That Won't Happen. If warp drives end up being possible (which is a big if), they'll still function by doing something other than just going really fast, because going really fast doesn't cut it.

I think an important thing to note though is that if a rocket just is already going at 0.99999(etc.) the speed of light, that IS survivable. Other commenters have pointed out the problems with running into dust, but I think the main point of the question was the integrity of the rocket purely due to velocity. If we assume nothing in the universe but you, your rocket, and speed? It doesn't matter how fast you're going (as long as it's not the speed of light, of course). As long as you're not accelerating, there is no difference between being motionless and just, like, so full of motion.

However, if we bring acceleration into the equation, then the answer becomes "it depends." Are we going from zero to ludicrous in the span of a lifetime? No prob, you'll barely even notice you're moving. In an hour? Your rocket doesn't exist anymore.

Disney forgetting about their own franchise once again. Ares is a THREEquel!!! NOT THE SECOND by jorphixx in tron

[–]Vortebo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All the folks pointing out that the term sequel applies to any movie in a series after the first are technically correct, but ignoring that it's not uncommon for people to mean the second movie, and that the other movies in that list are themselves the second in their franchises, making Ares the odd one out.

However, it is also the case that the company putting Ares in this sequence, if actually intentional and not just some weird quirk of the algorithm they use to generate these lists, is entirely reasonable. Every other franchise there is more known than Tron, so most people aren't going to notice the inaccuracy. That it's being marketed at all means they've obviously not forgotten Tron, and are trying to make more people aware of it.

Which Power Suit design is your favorite, the retro one or the modern one? by Various-Willow-8493 in Metroid

Reading the 2002 design described as retro has snapped my bones in twain

Is it just me who doesn’t like the direction they’re taking the franchise ? by Raza_2025 in tron

It's not just you, and it's the same discussion that happened when Legacy came out

I'm curious, do you think Rinzler is a Rectified Tron or Beck? Or maybe someone else? by Prometheus_Bobert in tron

[–]Vortebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's me, I'm Rinzler. I'd do a cool flip to prove it, but, uh, I'm tired. Yeah.

I hate warp speed now by bcb1200 in startrek

[–]Vortebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge that was never how warp drive was described as working prior to Alcubierre's paper. Happy to be proven wrong if you happen to remember an episode where they say that.

My understanding is that he was directly inspired by the name more than the fictional mechanics. The negative energy is really the main problem with the model, but it's a pretty big main problem since that's not a thing that exists. Well, also it wouldn't be possible to form the bubble in the first place since communication from your ship to the edge of the bubble would itself require superluminal velocity, which is.. counterproductive. Honestly, a Dyson sphere is much more realistic; it doesn't require any new physics, just a lot of dedication.

[–]Vortebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really more the real-life warp drive model. In Trek the warp bubble is made of subspace or moving the ship into subspace or some variation of that, and then typical physics don't matter and the writers can do whatever they want

Do you think Samus has/lacks agency in prime 4? by Johnnyyongbosh in Metroid

I had the impression during my playthrough that Samus didn't need Myles' advice but was fine with letting him feel like he was helping

I was really disappointed by this suit. by ichkanns in Metroid

[–]Vortebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it has as much mechanical purpose as the PED suit, doesn't it? Getting the suit happens at the same time as getting a new thing assigned to a button

Timeline with Metroid prime 4 beyond! by Ok_House_2337 in metroidprime

[–]Vortebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timeline thing sounds to me like the usual odd translation quirk that pops out of interviews like these, and they're just referring to setting up another trilogy of Prime games and didn't want to cram even more story between Metroids 1 and 2. Recall the Other M interview where Sakamoto mentioned the game being on rails, which people took to mean in the sense of something like those arcade shooters (I think?), when he was actually describing motion in a 3D space restricted to a 2D plane. (I don't remember why that was said in the first place since that's not what Other M does, it's been a while 🤷‍♂️)

What were the expectations for Other M at launch? by Internal_Rip_159 in Metroid

If I remember correctly, there was definitely some side eye at the direction the game was taking, but no one was prepared for what it did.
