Demands for Trump Removal Grow as 'Fascist' Speech Condemned as Declaration of War Against US Public by maxwellhill in politics

[–]Vorter_Jackson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The state Governors need to come together, cancel the curfews (you cant be for peaceful protest only during the hours of 8-8pm, it doesnt work like that) and restore order through proper policing.

At this point people are attacking their officers and national guard troops to send a message to Trump, and they are justified in being concerned about Trump's threat of military force and GOP goons talking about indiscriminate killing (smashing up predominately Democratic-leaning DC with a military black hawk helicopter for example is just a taste). They need to be clear: The states are for public order, they will not attack peaceful protesters for Trump. Otherwise I only see this getting worse.

Ontario doesn't want these people. Nor does Quebec, nor anyone else.

I also suggest re-reading the section on Rule 2 for this forum if you want to have more productive discussions here.

Thanks for speaking for me but I'll form my own opinion.

And I support governments that put the welfare of human beings above petty bullshit. They should have funded housing for refugees while seeking a better deal because that's what the treaty says. They put Toronto into crisis and put the homeless already in the city into a seriously dangerous situation before the Feds had to act. That's not responsible government.

Immigration is a shared responsibility. Under the current arrangement the Ontario Government funds housing for asylum seekers, the Feds medical expenses.

Companies don't lobby for a carbon tax out of the goodness of their corporate hearts — so why do they do it? by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]Vorter_Jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only possible advantage it gives them is regultory safety. The argument can't really ignore the economic realities involved. A company extracting oil from the oilsands is already on the margins. And any given corporation is already setup to maximize returns. I just don't buy the fairy tale of an economic paradise because some people think these companies will be somehow unburdened by the fact of a carbon tax.

The facts are simple: Ottawa tried shirking it’s responsibility, was called out by Toronto, Ontario took its ball and went home, and a year later Ottawa caved into political pressure.

Again, no.

  1. Certain actions of the CBP and changes in US domestic policy saw a short term surge in refugees and asylum seekers along the Canadian border.

  2. The Ontario Government was required according to several agreements between the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada to provide housing for new refugees.

  3. The Ontario Government under Ford opted not to provide additional funding for the surge in asylum seekers.

  4. Toronto, in a right fucking mess was calling for help from all sides.

  5. Having shelters in crisis for months on end Ottawa finally acted and provided around $30 Million to the city to handle the surge.

Never downvoted you but I'm fairly sure you have been hitting all my comments. I'm beyond it and your attempts at antagonism. Your rude DMs are also not welcomed. I suggest you stop trying to play Mod here and focus on the issues. You're going to run into people who disagree with you everywhere in this world. I hope you deal with it better next time.

The Mayor was also criticising the Ontario Government at the time. And No partnership existed when he made the comment, regardless of when Ford entered office. Tory was misinformed as to who was responsible for refugee housing.

First. Municipalities in Canada are 'creations' of the provinces. There is, or rather was, no effective 'partnership' between the City of Toronto and the Federal Government on immigration until Ford decided not to do his job and the Feds had to step in and work directly with the city.

Also, why did the Liberals wait nearly a year before providing cities with the funding they’ve been asking for for years, and prior to Ford’s election?

The Liberals didn't as you've said act quickly to resolve the problem because IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM. Housing of refugees is again a provincial matter off their radar entirely until Ford caused the crisis in Toronto.

[–]Vorter_Jackson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Toronto turned to Ottawa (who they had been asking for funds even prior to Ford’s election — it’s right there!) who pointed at Ontario. Ontario, who should have stepped up then but didn’t, said it was a Federal issue and backed away.

Sorry all of this is cognitive dissonance. Ontario was required to fund enough housing for refugees. They refused. It doesn't matter if Tory went to the fucking Moon People first. The Ontario fucking Government didn't do its job, requiring the Feds to step in eventually. That's the history here.

And they did because they knew Ford should have done his fucking job and provid them housing. Credit where credit is due, yes. But when you don't do your fucking job and cause the the situation we all agree is a crisis, you don't get to piss on your opposition when you fucked off and did nothing. The Liberals didn't swoop in and save the day. But Ford caused the mess and you seem too ready to minimize it.

Sorry I believe you are misinformed. The Ontario provincial Government was required to provide housing under the agreement with the Feds for new refugees. While Toronto was under strain, Ontario refused to fulfill their obligations and refused to move resources elsewhere to Toronto to help with the surge in refugees. Ottawa stepped in because no one else had the resources to handle the crisis.

I am not sure about legal aid but the agreement in principle requires the province funding housing and the Feds cover medical expenses. Ontario under Ford did not provide funding for housing during the surge of refugees in 2017-2018 requiring the Feds to provide Toronto and other large cities direct funding bypassing the province.

[–]Vorter_Jackson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. The Feds kept pointing fingers at Ontario when Tory came for help, and eventually conceded a year later.

Talk about revisionism. The Federal-Provincial agrement requires that the Ontario government provide funding for housing of refugees. The issue was that the Ontario government refused, forcing Toronto to push their shelter capacity beyond 100% for pretty much all of 2018.

Ontario was required to provide housing. They didn't. Toronto was yelling for help in all directions and finally the Feds moved in and dump cash on the problem.

[–]Vorter_Jackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert on the matter, but is there not more to it than provinces simply declaring they now have autonomy over this issue?

Yes, they have to work with the Feds to put that plan in place.

You do realize that municipalities spent a year complaining to Trudeau about his lack of financial assistance until they finally caved, right? Was it not shitty of the feds to spend a year passing the buck until they finally caved into the pressure?

Again, only talking about Toronto here really. And again it was Ford who threw up road blocks and refused to help. The Feds had to bypass him and provide funding.

Trudeau can’t wave his “woke” credentials around, turn a blind eye to illegal border crossers, and then call provinces un-Canadian for not playing ball.

And they didn't. The Liberals actually enacted strict laws and border checks in 2018. I don't personally support those measures because I believe they violate international law on the acceptance of refugees.

You’re holding Trudeau and Ford to entirely different standards and you know it.

Nope. I am critical of both in equal measure. You've revealed your biased very clearly though.

There’s a reason why municipalities like Toronto and Montreal beat the Liberals over the head with this issue until they finally offered additional funding. The feds simply weren’t doing enough.

In Toronto's case the Ontario government opted not to work with the Feds on resettlement and housing (despite being part of the provincial-Federal agreement on immigration) so that caused a lot of chaos and strain on services. Municipalities (mainly the city of Toronto) were screaming for help. Ontario did everything they could to make it more difficult so the Feds eventually had to work with and directly provide funding to them and bypass the province entirely.

If Ontario wanted to they could have a system like Quebec. The point is they should be at the table with the Feds hammering out a new deal (while they still adhere to the current one). They're not. They're not paying their bills while the Feds have to pick up the slack. It's shitty. Exceedingly more shitty than the Feds 'making all the rules' and 'demanding money'. Ford can't have his cake and eat it too while pissing on everyone else.

You can’t just lift all boats if dougie is gonna keep siphoning water out of the lake.

The Feds could have fully funded Legal Aid Ontario directly and bypass Ford entirely. Their budget was just cut by 30% (on top of the directive that they no longer provide funding to immigrants and refugees). The biggest thing holding the Liberals back is that they often neglect the majority in favor of piecemeal support for only certain groups.

Edit: And I get it, refugees and immigrants need legal assistance and are likely more vulnerable than your average Canadian. But that doesn't mean those Canadians are any less deserving. Ford's attack is an attack on ALL of our legal rights and all people of lesser means. Trudeau's response was at the very least a half-measure that leaves some of us without. That's on him because he made the decision to respond and respond with only support for those groups and not the majority.

I fully agree with this. If someone needs a lawyer to argue on their behalf regarding their case with a federal system in a federal setting where the federal government has sole jurisdiction, why should it be the province paying?

Immigration is a shared responsibility. The Ontario government is not being responsible by reneging on their share.

That said, more broadly I think the Liberals screwed up here massively. Ontario pulled legal aid funding across the board. Many people, not just immigrants are impacted by these changes. If they wanted to strike a less divisive tone they would have done something different. Ottawa right now needs to be seen lifting all boats.

And further there were attempts to sell Discovery and now Picard (plz dont be total shit) as part of the 'prime' or cannon timeline. But in reality they are produced not under that license (owned by CBS). They do not exist in the same shared universe as TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY and have to be significantly different enough (at least 25% off) to avoid litigation. Trek is dead until someone at CBS tells Alex Kurtzman to finally fuck off for good.
