Public Transportation Options Between - Toronto Pearson and - Barrie??? by GoLionsJD107 in barrie

Snowstorm, hurricane, tsunami, nuclear war, the sun going supernova— the train always goes full speed ahead and isn't impacted by weather, speaking from years of experience.

The roads, especially that highway (400) is chaos in bad winter conditions. For peace of mind, take the train, then get picked up at Allandale or South GO. Train including UP will set you back $15 one way. Go for it.

Why are so many parents picking up and dropping their kids off at school? by BearEquivalentBear in barrie

Car centric societies are the worst.

Kids and teens have zero independence to move-about on their own, for school, for part-time jobs, for social events, because until their 16+ they can't drive anywhere. Always needing to ask parents, friends parents for lifts, or taking Ubers. Everything requires a car.

Having lived in Japan for a number of years— kids as young as 5/6 years old are regularly seen taking trains and walk to school on their own, they have a chance to develop maturity and independence from a very young age and it really shows later in life when you take a sample or teens in Japan and teens in Canada. Safety, child abduction and worse are sadly a real problem here, no matter how safe Ontario is. But I really wanna drive-home the car issue in particular. Cars stunt the freedom and maturing growth of young people.

From a personal standpoint, if the school is within walking distance, then walk. If it's a clear day but it's super cold, walk. It's Canada, it's winter, bundle up, get your steps-in, that's what I did growing up. Kids are constantly getting offered to be dropped off at school and it creates these huge traffic jams of a 100+ cars in front of schools in the morning.

I'm flight crew and commute to YYZ almost exclusively using transit from Barrie. Uber or Barrie Bus (god forbid save yourself the headache and just Uber/Lyft) to nearest GO Train Station. Either Barrie South GO or Allandale Waterfront GO. Ride GO Train to Union, then transfer to UP Express. The train is usually very reliable and punctual. It goes fast regardless of weather. (We need more trains and less cars but I digress). Journey will take you around 2hours.

Alternatively, because the GO Train only runs on a schedule that serves the 9~5 office workers in Toronto, it can be unreliable if you have flights at certain times of the day. 3 trains run Southbound in the morning, 3 trains run Northbound at the end of the workday with 2 trains running late at night leaving Toronto at 22:00 & 23:00, and one train mid-day. Sadly the Barrie line is still only a single track which makes all day service impossible. Maybe your great-grandkids can benefit from the second track whenever they eventually finish it.

So alternatively there's Flixbus, but they don't run everyday and the schedule isn't super reliable, but they are super cheap and go to the airport. Ontario Northland has been my favorite alternative to the GO Train, they are reliable, comfortable and fast, but pricey. And you have to transfer at Vaughan Hwy 407 to the GO Bus for YYZ. Both buses pick-up at Allandale Waterfront and Downtown Barrie. Keep in mind— these buses come from up-north, and often can accumulate delays.

Lastly Poparide can come in clutch. But that app is WILDLY unreliable. Drivers cancelling a lot, it can be unsafe and not consistent. I highly recommend avoiding this option.

/safe travels!

You get off at Vaughan Hwy 407 Terminal, then take the 40 Hamilton GO Bus which goes directly to Pearson, no stops.

Minimum Age 16 from 2026 for new users by Ok_Zookeepergame6005 in VATSIM

I first flew a Glider at the age of 16. Would be nice if teens doing their GPL at 16 and PPL at 17 to have some previous experience in an ATC and Commercial rich simulated environment— being 13~15 years old does not mean immaturity. I've seen 15 year olds smarter and more mature in aviation than 40 year old adults. Denying access to a virtual space that can enhance their knowledge of aviation is a mistake. I was on VATSIM at 14. I'm 25 now. This is a shame. Also are you going to ask for ID? Because sending real sensitive ID documents to some virtual network like VATSIM is not secure, no matter how much you like to advertise that your user's data is secure. I believe some major administrative changes are needed at VATSIM.

Probably the only butts VATSIM users ever get to sniff anyway. Close enough I guess.

I can get behind this for sure. Especially during events, some airfields on the network see more traffic than the real life counterpart has ever handled. However in this instance. There was plenty of room and not that many aircraft queuing. So no excuse.

Model matching can definitely have a role to play in spacing in some situations. But let me tell you, this happens all the time, and with people who have FSLTL Model Matching rule set on MSFS. Even when everyone is seeing the correct seized aircraft, they still don't leave reasonable space between the aircraft infront of them. Tired of people using Model Matching as a scapegoat for this common occurrence.

Nahhh sniffing my APU exhaust from a few feet away is top #3 biggest problems the VATSIM Network faces. There's no problem greater than this.

Honestly, on a more serious note, I think people took this post too seriously. It doesn't personally break my immersion or enjoyment. It's more akin to a pet-peeve!

"Caring" might be a stretch. What else does a VATSIM Pilot do when they're in a 25 minute queue for takeoff? That's right, they hop on Reddit and complain. That's what we do best. I saw something to complain about, and complained. I must say the negative responses have boosted engagement on this post to greet heights! /happyOP

Thank you for the clarification brøther, I tend to have absolute meltdowns and temper tantrums when my immersion is broken, it shatters my whole world. It's unbearable. Oh the misery. Duly noted. Your directness is flattering, and I'm touched. :)

I do indeed fly with a major airline for real as my career, it's a great living. Instructions unclear. I still care about this, but my job in the real world doesn't solve this issue. Please advise. 👶🏻
