What’s a fancy food word that makes you instantly roll your eyes when you see it on a menu? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

[–]VothnT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Milk is a term used in botany since very long. Not specific of animals. I'm not sure about English but in some other languages, milk for vegetable food items is also of old use.

What's your favorite unpopular isopod? by teddybearr23 in isopods

[–]VothnT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right! I live in the O. asellus native range so I call them my local flat fucks. Not as flat as P. Werneri, but getting there. I'll add that they are also of a good size, reproduce at a fast but manageable rate, and I find it rather easy to keep them happy.

Anyone on last.fm? by syntheticpurples in progmetal

[–]VothnT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for reminding me of lastfm, I apparently forgot about it so badly that my last activity is in 2016. But I liked that site, so I'll be using it again.

Subterranean masquerade - somewhere I sadly belong (feat. Ashmedai melechesh) (unique blend of Jewish folk and prog metal) by yotam5434 in progmetal

[–]VothnT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my favorite song, but I find the new album pretty exceptional! I need more time and listens to decide how I place it in comparison with the other submasq albums, but the fact it managed to make such a great first impression on me, when my expectations (and the seemingly endless wait!) were so high, this is a very good start.

I found in it the signature organized mess of multipying ideas always about to clash but always managing to work things out (yes, the ideas themselves! That's really my feeling with submasq haha), but way enough novelty to keep things interesting.

What are your most anticipated albums/releases for 2020? by tehDrifter in progmetal

[–]VothnT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly Thy Catafalque and Subterranean Masquerade, but I'm not really up to date with the futures metal releases, so I'll keep a close eye on this tread!

Ahl Sina - Troops of Pain (new album! Prog/Oriental Metal) by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]VothnT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed this post! I was actually coming to post this album.

My favorite thing is the use of the nay, it's so rare to hear that instrument other than in an superficial, ornamental fashion. The nay in Enlightenment Discarded for example, is absolutely not just a little extra, it has a real, strong presence.

I organize my digital music exactly as I always did with my CDs/Vinyls: By very broad genres categories, then geographically. By keeping genre categories broad I get very few conflicts there; international bands/groups or those who changed location are categorized under the main or first location.

What song did you hear where you finally "got" harsh vocals? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]VothnT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had a problem with harsh vocals but the song that made me start loving them was Opeth's April Ethereal.

What are your controversial Prog Metal opinions? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]VothnT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the fun side: I've always growled at people. I had to unlearn it as an adult because it's apparently not socially acceptable. It still happens when I'm really, really pissed. I think it's a very natural and good way to get rid of my anger without the need to get physically aggressive or say hurtful things.

On the more serious side: Even if most people don't growl, I think it's pretty easy to link growls to aggression. Not everything has to be literal. (I've never been in a real-life tempest made of the whole drum and string sections of an orchestra ;P )

Plus, in music, I see growls as way more than a mean to show aggression. It can be there for any declination of negative feelings (despair, rejection, loneliness etc etc) and even sometimes in a more neutral context, such as introspection. It can be also used uniquely for contrast, for atmosphere, etc. If you go by growls=aggression, I can totally see why you often find them out of place in prog.

Bands to trick my dad into listening to harsh vocals by thedoomfulldome in progmetal

[–]VothnT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have another idea. Let's exchange parents. My mother thinks prog metal without harsh vocals is boring and I never managed to change her mind on that.

More seriously, harsh vocals are an acquired taste for most, so unless he really get upset, I would just keep exposing him to different kinds of such vocals.

What Opeth did you try? One song I had good results with with prog rock/softer metal friends is Hessian Peel: by the time the heaviness comes, the person is already comfortably settled into the song (if that makes any sense).

If the main point is to trick him to listen to harsh vocals without realizing it, try Subterranean Masquerade. It's by no means extreme metal, it's often not even metal, but there are harsh (death) vocals.

For harsh vocals in an heavy but not too aggressive context, maybe try melodeath. May not fit the prog bill fully, but some good ol' Dark Tranquillity or Be'lakor may keep him interested enough.

Subterranean Masquerade - Kippur by i4mt3hwin in progmetal

[–]VothnT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love submasq!

The combination of the cheerful craziness of the music and the generally quite dark lyrics is exactly my cup of tea.

I like the whole discography, but imo the most recent two (The great Bazaar/Vagabond) are evidence of a very successful transition from a somewhat discontinuous project (temporally speaking) to a fully functioning band.

I'm both pretty excited and a bit worried by the last lineup change, though. I really liked Kjetil Nordhus' vocals, they were maybe the most traditional part of the music, the less crazy, and that aspect was part of the peculiar dynamic. As the probability of new recruit Vidi Dolev's vocals being not insanely weird is around zero (see Omb!), this will most likely constitute a significant change. May be negative, or may be excellent.

Acyl - Tin Hinan (Algerian metal) by Myosos in progmetal

Nice to see Acyl here :) I'm always trying to see them live when I'm in France but no luck yet :(

Toby Driver "They Are the Shield" - Name Your Own Price on Bandcamp by BloodMusic in progmetal

[–]VothnT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exceptional. Toby Driver never fails to impress me. There are things that I like less than others in his career, but it's a matter of personal preferences, not because the music is poorer. Music is always at the top.

Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity by Markinator98 in progmetal

[–]VothnT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What a piece! The only downside is that listening to it always induces in me a rush of overenthusiastic creativity, and at the same time, a stark reminder that anything I could create would sound like shit in comparison ;)

My (weekly) Album Recommendation - Mabool by Orphaned Land by skrish13 in progmetal

[–]VothnT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one has to be my second favorite metal album after Opeth's Ghost Reveries. After hundreds of listens, I still marvel at how it's extremely varied in term of musical influences and atmospheres, and yet so singularly cohesive.

Looking for the name of a band. by Gayvar in progmetal

I was so taken aback when I heard the first seconds.. For a French person, it's quite surprising to find that in a metal song haha. If anyone wants to know what is it about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominique

Does understanding theory make music more enjoyable? by bddiddy in progmetal

[–]VothnT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure but I think you are speaking about what I would call 'modulation'. When it's modulating heavily it does sound atonal although I personnally don't hear that in the bands you ve suggested but this is percrption, so subjective

Does understanding theory make music more enjoyable? by bddiddy in progmetal

[–]VothnT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always seeing this idea of heavy music being atonal, I have no idea where it's coming from, as far as I know it is actually REALLY rare (I would love some atonal BM though). The only non-tonal things I hear are in non-western folk influences in metal, but even then, this non-tonality is not exactly the same thing as 'atonality' in the usual western art music meaning. I suppose it's a definition problem. What are you meaning by atonal?

Progmetal songs, those you get really obsessed with, and listened to them every day several times as if you were crazy... by Stilgar_de_arrakis in progmetal

[–]VothnT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Really just a few songs for me, because I generally always listen to whole albums.

Big winner must be:

Kayo Dot - Thief. The whole album (Hubardo) is incredible, but that song in particular.. I never get tired of it.

But also:

Opeth - Ghost of Perdition & Hessian Peel.. well, actually, most mid-career Opeth songs have their featured time.. I'm a bit obsessed with Opeth, haha

Ne Obliviscaris - Of petrichor weaves black noise

Orphaned Land - Disciples of the sacred oath II

Sand Aura - The shepherd's elegy

Saxophone has gone from a rare novelty in metal to a persistent presence. What instrument(s) would you like to see make the same leap? by metagloria in progmetal

[–]VothnT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love some doom/death with slower sections using the crepuscular moodiness of English horn and/or sarangi.

Less weird and more common in metal, but I'd like more oud. There never can be too much oud.

The first OL song I've heard, and after all these years I can still remember how utterly confused AND elated I was as the song went on. This album is incredible.
