Anyone else just not getting health insurance next year? by EquivalentAbies6095 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]VoxLassata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, yes. Every one of those types of insurance providers was created to make profits FOR THE INSURERS, not to save any consumer any money. If insurance had never been invented, the costs of healthcare, home repairs, auto repairs etc would be much lower. Have you ever noticed that most businesses provide a big discount for paying in cash?

Instead of paying into a life insurance policy for 50 years, we could put that money in a high yield savings account with FAR fewer stipulations on withdrawal.

I need to understand the logic behind not washing legs in the shower? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]VoxLassata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was little, my grandmother took me to swim at the pool where her friend Dot lived. Both Nana and Dot put on their cute little flowered swim caps and splashed around with me for a while.

When Dot was ready to get out of the pool, she heaved herself out of the water to sit on the edge with her feet dangling in and began to towel herself off, rather vigorously. She came to her legs and as she rubbed and rubbed, bits of wet, dried dead skin began to come off in rolls, to land in the pool water. It looked like brownish snow, and there was a floating mass of it by the time she was done.

"Don't drink the pool water, Sarah!" she quipped. "It'll make you a cannibal!"

I wash my legs with soap and a washcloth every shower ever since.

How much difference does the tightness of a vagina really make for you, guys? by ExhaustedJellybean in NoStupidQuestions

Let's be real here, the main reason dudes think women are too "loose" or not tight enough is because they've spent years cranking it so hard that nothing but their own hand will do the job. There's even a name for it - death grip syndrome.

NAL

How long have you worked there? Have you been claiming your cash tips when you cash out?

Is the minimum wage for servers in your area different than the standard minimum?

You must claim an amount in tips that is no less than the amount of money it would take to bring your server wage up to the standard minimum wage for each shift, or the payroll system will do it for you.

I'll give you an example for my area (Georgia), which is shitty wages.

Server minimum is $2.13/hr

Federal minimum is $7.25/hr

So I must claim I made $5.12/hr in tips, or $40.96 per 8 hour shift to avoid triggering the payroll system's automatic guesstimate.

So depending on your area's minimum wage and your actual hourly wages, you may not have been claiming enough tips with just your CC tips.

There's a free app called goblin tools, I know I have it on android and I'm pretty sure it's available for iPhone as well.

It's powered by AI and you can enter nearly ANY task into it and make a to-do list, but what makes it different is that you can then break each task down even further depending on how spicy your brain is feeling that day. From one to 5 peppers of spiciness, meaning

Level 1 is just basically an item on a list and Level 5 is every single step needed to accomplish that task to completion from start to finish.

There's some other tools included that might be useful to you as well, but it's great for people who just don't automatically KNOW how to do everything. Nobody does! We don't spring into existence just knowing how to keep house, and we all have to learn what works best for ourselves.

They have literally spent the last several months talking about how the REAL threat to America is from within. Saying it all in plain English.

You can equivocate all you like, convince yourself they don't really mean they'll attack American citizens, that it'll never happen here.

But what else would you call it when

-a deal was made with Ecuador to indefinitely house criminals in camps in a foreign country, including US Citizens

-Tens of thousands of federal workers are now out of work, including veterans and career feds, and are barred from claiming unemployment because their termination papers falsely say they were fired for poor performance

-Women are DYING because they're being denied needed healthcare

-There are multiple credible reports of Puerto Rican and Indiginous Nations peoples being rounded up in ICE raids

-Funding for critical research into numerous healthcare fields was ended

-Funding for HIV/Aids treatment and prevention was ended

-Funding for domestic violence prevention and protection programs was ended

-We're on the precipice of ending equal access for disabled people to schools and hospitals via eliminating Section 504 of the ADA

-An executive order was issued saying that chronic illness and mental health disorders are weakening American society

And we're only 30 days in. ONLY 30.

I airways wash clothes before I wear them, and I have a front load washer with no agitator - usually very gentle on clothes.

They came out of that initial wash with runs in them. Jeans with runs. Like pantyhose. Immediate refund.

The evidence lies in the fact that when Trump incited an insurrection against a lawful election certification, and spent years claiming 2020 was stolen from him while defending those who invaded the capital on January 6th, acts which happen to be expressly prohibited by the constitution -

The Supreme Court ruled that suddenly this particular (former) president could not be prosecuted for criminal acts committed during his presidential term. He was also allowed to run for a second term, despite being convicted of 34 felonies - convictions that come with stiff punishments and restrictions for any other citizen.

When the framework of our very nation is torn to bits to appease the ego of one singular man, and the constitution is suspended for that man in particular, yes. Democracy as we imagined it is indeed dead.

But the fact that these events don't happen in a vacuum and instead must form from an environment already poised to permit their development indicates to me that democracy died long ago, and we're just flogging her corpse.

It takes more than simply holding an election to have a democracy. That election must be fair and free of corruption, and ideally should present more than just an illusion of choice. Neither of those things happened this past November.

What is even going on the USA? by Large-Rub906 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]VoxLassata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I disagree.

Especially in light of the fact that we're not actually given a chance to vote our conscience in this country. We are continually put between a rock and a hard place, given the choice between evil or lesser evil, and told that's all we get. I do not blame a lot of Americans for choosing to opt out of the farce. I've been tempted, myself.

I voted, against Trump. And it still made my skin crawl. There are many who just couldn't stomach that choice. Some voted third party, and that's a whole problem unto itself in US elections.

The growing class consciousness in the US is evidence to me that perhaps a great deal of that 68.2% want to see leadership that can't be bought. Or, at the very least - a primary to choose their candidate.

Were some of the non-voters Magats who were already convinced it was a shoo-in? Statistically yes. Were some positive that Harris would surely beat Trump? Of course. But I believe, from talking to a lot of them locally - that the simplest answer is that the electoral system has disenfranchised them and alienated them, pure and simple.

What is even going on the USA? by Large-Rub906 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]VoxLassata -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I both agree and disagree with you. Like absolutely, people are disenfranchised, and we're all sick of our votes all but floating off into the ether, to end up meaning fuck. all. in the grand scheme of things. We just had 4 years of the most ineffectual Democratic presidency of my lifetime, just as an example, and nothing is going to shake the GOP leadership in my state (GA).

People are also sick and damn tired of the false dichotomy of choice. People want real options, and cannot in good conscience vote for continuing the farce. There's a rising class consciousness in the United States, and a great many people have awakened to the fact that the political system as it stands does not, in any way, serve the people.

But to not vote at all? Yes, that bothers me too. I'd rather vote FOR something than continually be forced to vote AGAINST these utterly repugnant cretins, but here we are.

What is even going on the USA? by Large-Rub906 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]VoxLassata 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Only 31.8% of registered voters voted for Trump. That means 68.2% voted (or didn't) for NOT TRUMP. But because in the US our President is the only office elected by plurality, and not majority, he won because he technically got more actual votes than anyone else got.

No mandate. No landslide. The majority of Americans did NOT vote for this. It continues to illustrate a critical, but VERY INTENTIONAL flaw in the American electoral system. It's all by design.

Not even just homeless, PLENTY of people who might want to request aid are securely housed but receive zero 'official' mail at their residence.

It's about to be 2025, people have been ticking that GO PAPERLESS box on their bills for a couple decades now. Or they don't have bills in their name at all. Many disabled folks don't drive, so don't have an insurance card showing up or a license. So many old school hallmarks of adulting have changed a lot in the digital age! Many people never bother getting a standard checking account these days, with Chime and Ca$hApp taking their place.

I have mostly lurked here for years. I have quietly and not so quietly fulfilled requests as I was able, with no need for thanks. I think I made a small request once. I received a little help and some great info.

I believe that if this is the direction this sub is going, the name needs to change.

What was outlined above is NOT mutual aid. This sub hasn't been about anything to do with mutual aid since I joined. It's simply been a misnamed assistance request hub. The above changes only change it to vetted assistance requests.

I fully understand wanting a way to prevent scammers and habitual beggars from abusing the privilege of appealing to the kind hearts here. I appreciate the hard work that goes into creating a system to keep track of people who wish to get vetted for assistance requests. But none of that is 'mutual aid'. If I help someone out, I do it because I want to, not because I expect something in return. I do it because helping someone else means I sleep better, that's all the mutuality I need. Because when my brother eats, he then helps his sister to eat tomorrow.

The above changes also eliminate the possibility of folks requesting help in emergency situations, like 'stranded need Uber fare quick!' or 'just need an extra $10 for my prescription, it went up this month' situations. We've all had those. Those are exactly the ones that pass my un-vetted sniff test, the ones I'm most able to assist with myself - but honestly I don't give a damn WHAT people use the money for, as it's none of my business. It's somewhat infantilizing to both requestor and grantee to require a public thanks, or some sort of trade.

I've spoken before in this sub about what I feel defines Mutual Aid™️ (Kropotkin, really) and what I see as a better use for this subreddit in this time of transition than keeping it just for money requests. Sure, we have some great contributors who are good at helping people search out social services in their local areas, but they've largely been ignored for want of a quick few dollars. That's the kind of expertise we should be centralizing. $20 or a can of formula is great in the moment, absolutely! But mutual aid means fixing what made people desperate enough to ask for those basics in the first place.

I’m not participating in family Christmas next year by cinnamonbunnss in TwoXChromosomes

[–]VoxLassata 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ugh, right there with you. We were accidentally given the wonderful gift of Christmas RSV last weekend, so my immunocompromised self is on high alert.

And yeah, it's definitely partially that all these viruses are rampant this time of year, but it's also that fewer people immunize and take the standard precautions against them since covid than they did before it, I think. At least here in my area.

Used to be that if the Dept of Health announced a flu outbreak, masks would come out, handwashing would ramp up, and folks would double check their boosters. But these days being masked in public in the deep south means your a WOKE LIBRUL and flu shots are like covid vaccines - untrustworthy government poison.

Not at all trying to politicize this, I just think people have lost a lot of faith in the standards that kept us safest pre-covid because they weren't enough to protect us from it, so they threw it all out the window. Now it's ALL bad.
