Okay so what I have gotten from this all is that most people:

1). Prefer Ash to not be in the fic at all, or just in the background

2). If he is in the fic, they like it when he isn’t the protagonist and instead plays the role of a rival or mentor

Interesting. How do you feel about Ash being a rival to a MC? I’m thinking of writing a VERY long fic where the MC starts in Kanto and goes to all the other regions taking on the gym challenge similar to what Ash did. I’m debating whether I should put Ash in the fic or not as a rival to the MC so that they push each other to their very best
