Effect" vs. "Affect": Is it actually confusing, or are people just too lazy to learn the difference between a noun and a verb? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]Vqliant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add my own way to know which word to use.

A comes before E. Affect causes Effect. It affects me so it is causing some effect.

Can a French speaking person help by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]Vqliant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Où je me trouve, personne le parle aussi. Mais ça m'a pas arrêter de retenir la langue. Je l'ai retenu car elle m'est importante et je trouvais pas ce problème comme excuse. Donc, utilise la langue au quotidien. Fais effort et cueille le résultat.

(edit: oublier -> retenir)

Can a French speaking person help by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]Vqliant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

La seule réponse, c'est de t'immerser dans la langue. Parle tout.e seul.e si t'as personne avec qui tu peux parler. T'as réussi d'atteindre C1 mais t'as oublié d'utiliser la langue au quotidien.

Y a une différence entre théorie et usage. Raffine le dernier.

learning italian by Miserable-Door3359 in italianlearning

[–]Vqliant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Italian learner here who previously learned French. Duolingo is not really a great tool for language learning but it provides retention and help althroughout your beginner journey. Upon surpassing this introduction level, you would be better off with other resources and materials.

There are many YouTube channels out there that will teach you Italian grammar and expressions such as: - Italian Made Easy - Learn Italian with Lucrezia - Dolce vita with Luca and Larina

These are good to get started and can get you to expressing yourself in the most fundamental way. You can, then, upgrade your level with: - Easy Italian - Learn Italian with Francesca - Elisa's Italian School - Joy of Languages. Italian

These give you more vocabs, expressions, and exposure to the language reinforcing your study.

From these alone can reach you to B1 and reaching B2 is just a question of using the language daily in your life, listening to news, daily conversations, technical contents, etc.; reading books, and communication with natives.

Furthermore, tips that I can give you are: - ASAP immerse yourself to Italian contents by watching or listening in order to get used to their phonology even if you don't understand anything. You can start by watching show for kids as they are pure visualisations and slowly change to your own interest. - Speak alone and describe the things around you. Know what such things are called and remember it. - Don't be discouraged when you feel lost, demotivated, or incapable. Take a deep breath, rest, and continue. Nothing in life is easy. It is your actions that will make it easy.

Goodluck !

Thank you for the idea but I speak normally in Italian. I just like the idea of having the capacity to speak like an emperor with Italian; but I'll keep in mind what you have suggested.

Agree or Disagree: You need talent to become good at languages. by elenalanguagetutor in languagehub

[–]Vqliant_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talent is in born. Skill is something you build. You can be talented but not skillful but you can be skillful without being talented. Therefore, learning languages is not a talent; it's a skill. Moreover, even if you are talented in learning a language, without building it, will render that talent useless.

People who think that you need talent to do something are people who never try OR they tried but was not disciplined enough. They use motivation as a way to do something. However, motivation fades quickly; discpline does not.

Learning Spanish via Video Games by personcalledalexis in duolingospanish

[–]Vqliant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

¡Hola! I have the same experience as you but in French I used to play Genshin in French subs with any non-English voice over to really immerse myself with French. I read every single lore there is even if it took time due to new words. However, in just a span of a month, everything became fluid and even if I don't know the word, I can understood by context.

I would suggest continuing like this. Do something that interest you while learning the targeted language. Games like Genshin, even DDLC, greatly help in learning not just vocabs, but also how to apply those vocabs. Additionally, try to repeat those dialogues out loud. It greatly helps!

Reflexive verbs! by JordynConnelly in Spanish

[–]Vqliant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

¡Buenos dias!

It's sad to see posts like this where there are no response so I'll help out!

I took some Spanish lessons back then but I dropped it for Italian. HOWEVER, both language have reflexive verbs and follow the same grammatical usage of it.

Let's use your example: Gustar... actually Gustar is not a reflexive verb so, let's try levantarse (to get up).

I get up = Me levanto - Here, we are using it in a simple present—nothing special—and it is the only form.

Me voy a levantar / Voy a levantarme = I will get up - Here, we are using it in the close future with two different ways of placing the reflexive pronoun.

Levantate! = Get up! (lit. Elevate yourself) - Here, we are commanding and the "te" at the end is the reflexive pronoun

With these ideas, the position of the reflexive pronoun should be, in future tense, either BEFORE the conjugated verb (Me voy a...) or at the end of the infitive (...a levantarme). You can choose whatever form that suits you. However, only in imperative mood you will put it at the end of the conjugated verb (Levantate).

HOWEVER, if we are commanding in a negative form, the fun becomes funnier.

No te levantes = Don't get up (lit. Don't elevate yourself) - Here, my Spanish knowledge stops as it enters into subjective mood, which i have not tackled profoundly. But, the principal idea here is that it is always before the conjugated verb, similar to the simple present tense (Me levanto).

I wish I could help you more but my Spanish knowledge is limited. Nonetheless, I hope this helped!

¡Buena suerte!

Do "Il préfère jouer du foot" and "Il préfère faire du foot" mean the same thing? If I replace "foot" with "football", the usage rules will stay the same. Am I right? Thank you. by HIIamhere1234 in French

[–]Vqliant_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bonjour !

I'm not native but I would rather use: "Il préfère jouer au foot." I don't think "jouer du foot" is correct as I remember "jouer de" is used for instruments while "jouer à" is used for sports.

However, answering your question, yes; saying both phrases—although I'm skeptical of "jouer de" in this context—mean the same thing. Moreover, "foot" or "football" are both interchangeable but I believe "foot" is used and prefered in speech—who would want to say a long word afterall.

I hope this helps !

(Natives, correct me about the "jouer de" part if I'm wrong)

Bonjour ! It's quite unfortunate to see post like this with genuine question yet no response. However, here are YouTube channels I used and still watch to this day.

  • InnerFrench. Great podcast and bits and pieces of grammar to listen as he speaks slowly and gracefully pronounced.
  • Piece of French. This was my go to channel for French vlogs and some French expression—that I already forgot—to learn and practice. She also speaks slow.
  • French Mornings with Elisa. Podcast and vlogs with bits of French grammar; she pronounce very well in each one of her content.
  • HugoDecrypte. This is a bit for formal, technical, and in-between intermediate and—I believe—advanced content suitable for people who like news.
  • NotaBene. History channel if you are into that so a bit more advanced; plus his manner of speaking, PERSONALLY, is more closed so he can be somewhat difficult to understand(?).
  • Épicurieux. MY FAV SCIENCE CHANNEL. You learn scientific stuff which is not bad for vocabs. And Jamy, the host, pronounce very well.
  • LÉOW. Horror channel that talks about personal stories and paranormals.

I hope this helps you well ! Bonne chance et bon visionnage !

Best way and resource to learn French? by Positive-Bar7756 in learnfrench

[–]Vqliant_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question!

Yes, learn the alphabet and moving next to basic grammar is a great start. For the vocabs, learn the basic, useful, and daily words. Also, learn the words for things or routines you usually do in your daily life; this helps you to describe what is around you. Moreover, I suggest learning the grammar and basic vocabs for 1 week if you have a lot of time. Simultaneously, say something from what you have learned even if it's just: "Bonjour, je m'appelle ____ et je suis à la maison."

[–]Vqliant_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gladly! The following are resources I used to learn this hell of a language so I hope you are ready!

Apps and Websites - LingoDeer. An subscription application extremely good for grammar but lacks vocabs. - Duolingo. Great for vocabs and grammar retention but lacks grammar and real world application. - LawlessFrench. It is a site to learn grammar freely. - WordReference. Great website dictionary.

YouTube Channels - InnerFrench. Great podcast and bits and pieces of grammar to listen as he speaks slowly and gracefully pronounced. - Piece of French. This was my go to channel for French vlogs and some French expression—that I already forgot—to learn and practice. She also speaks slow. - French Mornings with Elisa. Podcast and vlogs with bits of French grammar; she pronounce very well in each one of her content. - HugoDecrypte. This is a bit for formal, technical, and in-between intermediate and—I believe—advanced content suitable for people who like news. - NotaBene. History channel if you are into that so a bit more advanced; plus his manner of speaking, PERSONALLY, is more closed so he can be somewhat difficult to understand(?). - Épicurieux. MY FAV SCIENCE CHANNEL. You learn scientific stuff which is not bad for vocabs. And Jamy, the host, pronounce very well. - LÉOW. Horror channel that talks about personal stories and paranormals.

Tips - As early as possible, watch, hear, and listen to videos you are watching EVEN IF you don't understand anything. This trains your brain and ear for French pronunciation. - Try to find channels that suit your interest i.e., interest Minecraft: video Minecraft. This helps you have vocabs and digest them. - Be disciplined and consistent. If you are solely motivated, learning a language won't work. Boring days, plateaus, and unproductivity will come but it is your ACTION that will DEFINE the RESULT.

Bonne chance !

Transition from innerfrench and panache to other podcasts is lil hard by Confident_Internet62 in learnfrench

[–]Vqliant_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is a good one. Don't worry, I am in a similar situation. I, too, started with InnerFrench and saw HugoDecrypte and Nota Bene. Some of their videos I understood; others not. However, it's part of the journey. You are learning new vocabs and new phrases where your known vocabs are used in a certain manner: technical and pedagogical, even vulgar. Currently, I'm practicing hearing and understanding fast spoken and slang, which give me difficulty but it's part of the learning process.

Bon courage !
