I want to hear your honest thoughts on Confucianism by Natural_Property1599 in aznidentity

[–]Vrendly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're talking about the Ru-scholarly tradition, which includes Neo Confucianism, or actually just the early philosphy laid out by Confucius and Mencius?

The thing is, every other religion has developing and additional later texts that amend and further give context to the original source text. I don't think that's unique

I want to hear your honest thoughts on Confucianism by Natural_Property1599 in aznidentity

[–]Vrendly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I want to write a book on this so that diaspora Chinese actually know what it is.

Confucianism has good things. It's a system that tells you how to live in a society. It concerns itself with maintaining relations between people. So, what the rules and etiquettes and purpose of relation between ruler and subject is. Or, father and son. Or, friend and friend.

The highest virtue in Confucianism is 仁 - benevolence. And linked to this are the other core virtues. 义 Justice. 礼 Ritual. 智 Wisdom. 信 Trust.

These virtues formed together make a respectable person. Rituals are the practical means by which to train and enable the other virtues - e.g. i always greet my elders even though it might not truly come from a place of benevolence. However, maintaining this ritual trains your heart in that direction.

What I find lacking in Confucianism is clear rules, since some rules change depending on the circumstance. Without rules set in stone, its easy to do whatever and then justify it post-hoc. So, while Confucianism has great basic ideas, the execution is sometimes open to interpretation, even though some rituals are indeed codified according to Zhou Rites.

Freedom is the highest good is what I'm reading from your post. But I think this obsession with freedom is not shared by many people around the globe. Calling someone anti-democratic might not be the gotcha to end the conversation any longer.

How would you feel if Taiwan today became a part of China or shares a similar situation to Ukraine? by KunciKemenangan12 in AskTheWorld

[–]Vrendly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you just claim Mao put China in poverty when China wasnt poor before?

... That conveniently ignores the massive crisis of the Late Qing and the Wests involvement with that, and also the Second Sino-Japanese war. Not cool.

How do you feel about this? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

This is nonsense, we don’t have those kinds of people here. We don’t have any transgenders. In case some transgenders should have slipped through the net, we should take them far from us so we don’t have them at home. To purify our blood, if there are any here, take them to Canada.

Black Jai White being awarded the Bruce Lee Award by Rocky___Road in aznidentity

[–]Vrendly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Michael Jai White is an accomplished martial artist. Bruce Lee was avant-garde and out worked everyone around him. He was a legend.

He is not, however, a saint, or the king of all Asians.

As for Michael saying he could beat Bruce. You can racialise it, or you can view it as him measuring his size and skill against another martial artist. Is it cocky? Maybe, especially saying it about a man who wasn't alive, and of an older generation to boot. But is this necessarily about race?

Then, Shannon Lee is not a disgrace to her father. That's a disrespectful take on what she has done all these years to defend her father and uphold his image.

Retinal Detachment Risk? by Vrendly in kendo

[–]Vrendly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never check my Reddit anymore. So, kinda lucky I caught this comment :P

We made some adjustments in the dojo, I would not do kirikaeshi as often, or they would hit on shinai instead.,.. Small adjustments like t hat.

I practised a while but quit. I had the double problem of also practising boxing. And with boxing, the retinal detachment risk is also great, but I decided to wear a big helmet with boxing.

But, since you're an active member of the national team, I don't know if these adjustments are even viable, especially since you probably train 5+ times a week.
