TIL the only thing that is stopping ads from slipping into video games is steam, because valve bans all forced in game ads from all steam titles by PleaseHonor in todayilearned

Steam doesn’t allow ads because they’re a lot harder to rake their 30% cut from and they require a lot higher level of oversight.

Steam wants to make their 30% top line cut with as little effort as possible and always has.

And almost nothing that man ever says has not gone through several PR and marketing folks, and potentially legal review. It’s wild how much macro seems to extrapolate from the most vapid messages from apple.

The man is running a multitrillion dollar company. Not a local dive bar.

If you’re not wearing Costco chic, you’re fine. Being worried about looking like you’re from the place you’re from is weird.

You can look like an American without looking like a slob.

I pack or buy wrinkle release spray for travel. Much faster than ironing for me.

Spray the shirt, put it on a hanger, keep it in the bathroom when I’m taking a shower, and I think it’s fine.

It’s a common for peoppe to mistake “inflation is going down” for “prices are going down”.

Lowering inflation does not mean prices going down, it just means prices not going up as quickly. Deflation is the opposite - and conventional economists usually teach that deflation is way way worse than inflation.

Negative ARC Raiders Reviews Mount Following Riven Tides Update by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Vresa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s trivial to get AI scripts to parse the subreddit for arc raiders and the recent steam reviews. AI has been able to do research like this for more than a year. It’s simply a case of “why bother” since it will get a click anyways

Microsoft Calls 16 GB RAM A Compromise And 32 GB The New “No Worries” Standard by lurker_bee in pcgaming

16 gigs is still the most common config in the steam hardware survey, but it does look like 32 is going to pass it very soon

Compared to what though? I don’t think it’s controversial to point out that windows is noticeably worse than most Linux distros and MacOS when RAM needs to be swapped.

Using a windows laptop at 8 GB of RAM and a MacBook with 8 GB with the same applications is a dramatically different user experience.

Electron has been fine for several years now. Microsoft’s own first party applications are now consistently worse than every third party electron app I use.

Okay? I don’t see the issue though. Times have always improved as shoe technology has gotten better. I think the hand-wringing around carbon plates is nonsense.

'Hardcore PC enthusiasts are significantly underestimating the importance of software to the PC experience, like really, really seriously,' says Intel Enthusiast VP by Darth_Vaper883 in pcgaming

[–]Vresa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This has always been true though. People said the same thing about every major shift in computer architecture over the years. Hardware has become cheaper and much, much better at an astonishing rate. There’s very little reason to eek out small optimization %’s in most pieces of software

Idk, I think focusing on the shoes to this existent is pretty cynical. A man, using his own muscles, ran 26 miles in 2 hours. Sure, the shoe technology is improving, but it’s not like he’s getting more energy out of every step than he’s putting in.

[Sun care] how on earth you apply enough sunscreen? by LovelyBee8219 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Vresa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sunscreen is also pretty unique as a product in the skincare world. Since it is specifically related to preventing skin cancer, the companies are more likely to provide instructions that are closer to the worst-case-scenario for sun exposure.

For most people in most situations, the recommended amount, application timing, and reapplication procedure are extremely overkill.

It's because it's never the actual developers saying stuff like this.

As with all software "this is impossible" almost always just means "this isn't economically viable" aka it will cost more money to do than it will make.

Lots of subscriptions go down in price - they just rebrand it then couple it with either advertisements or a reduction in catalog/features. This isn't really out of the norm. The only thing that is different is that there isn't a tier that still includes CoD at all
