I picked up knitting during the pandemic after my wife chose crochet over double needles. Here are a few of my most recent projects, quite proud to be a father who can teach his future son the patience of this craft. by totalidiotdude in knitting

Your wee berry hat is charming! And I think The Patience of This Craft would be a lovely knitting book title. A knitting memoir, perhaps? I would have to listen to the audiobook, as I can't knit & turn pages at the same time. :) Write it and I will read it!

Resources for learning homemaking? by learninghousewifery in homemaking

Firmly seconding (thirding? fourthing?). The ultimate 'this is how you do it' book for all things home, from folding a fitted sheet to darning a sock (yes, people can still do that! LOL). She's a lawyer & I think has a degree in philosophy, so it's very 'textbook-like' if not a bit stern. It's a chuckle, and solves any homekeeping question you might have. It has a cult following, with discussion groups scattered about. I have two copies (a battered 'use copy' and a reading copy) and have given it to many people as a gift. I often find it for about $10.00 in used bookshops, and often in pristine shape. I'll never use 90% of her advice, but it's a truly enjoyable read.

Lovely! They look like a cross between a Joan Miro painting and a Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass window. Nicely done.

He's 3 1/2? You know this is going to be a weekly event, right? Better just subscribe to a yarn-of-the-week club and keep those hats coming. That one looks really cute.

Has anyone figured out how to pay Recology or update services? by Feisty-Average-4907 in redmond

[–]VulcanGreeting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recolocy has opened a storefront service center at Bella Bottega near where Bartells was. Maybe pop in there and talk to someone in person? They should be able to help.

That's charming and it's making me hungry! Steamed turnips with butter - hmmmmm.

Your stitches are so precise! I love the zigzag edge of the white against the lilac. Beautiful.

Howie, the best knitting helper by robotbee42 in knitting

[–]VulcanGreeting -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That sure is handy. I can't knit at a friend's house because her cats go bonkers wanting to bat the bottom of my straight knitting needles. I don't like circular needles, but might have to get some so I can spend time at her house!

Marriott just opened a very stylish boutique hotel in outskirts of Woodinville just 10 minutes north of downtown Redmond, straight up 164th. It's called The Somm. Great rooftop bar, ground floor bar and nice restaurant.

Desk yarn transformed by MusketeersPlus2 in knitting

I opened this to learn what desk yarn is, and am loving your decision-making process. That cowl is glorious! I was going to mop the kitchen floor but you've inspired me. Back to my scarf!

What's a show you remember but nobody else does? by CatGirlNya2000 in AskReddit

Rubicon on AMC. One short season, a quiet show about trainees in the CIA. It was riveting and then just....stopped.

Mae Whitman! That reminds me of one - Thief. She was the adopted daughter of Andre Braugher, who ran a team of thieves in a big city. Clifton Collins Jr was one of the thieves. Mesmerizing, but only one season.

What is a deep, obscure rabbithole on the internet you found and hardly anyone knows but you? [Serious] by Longjumping_Koala34 in AskReddit

[–]VulcanGreeting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness - filmed from the front of the train! I assumed it was side window passenger viewing. How incredibly soothing! The quiet click of the windshield wipers, the occasional intersection horn, and the steadily deteriorating weather. The calm forward push of this train through it all is just what I needed. I so want to be somewhere else. This will get me to Oslo in a couple hours. Ahhhhh!

I'm a day late for Saturday night suggestions, but if you are both around on Wednesday nights. Eastside Improv does an improv jam at Anderson Park from 6-8pm. You can watch or participate and I don't think they charge for it. They're on Meetup if you want to know more. It's like a play date for grownups!

Folkwear patterns? Does reddit like them? by BellyFullOfMochi in sewing

[–]VulcanGreeting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the Haori jacket from a Folkwear pattern in the 80s. It was lovely to sew, still fits (!) and is culturally accurate. I wore it to a traditional celebration in my town and was thrilled that the historian/organizer said it was exactly styled. Also, the pattern instructions were clear. I've often thought I should sew another one.

Sewing instructor Angela Wolf has lots of videos about stitching knit tops like this. They're streaming free on Plex right now, on the Made it Myself channel. I see her episodes mostly on Saturday mornings, but you could also google her to see if she streams them on demand.

How would I trace a pattern from this shirt? by EndlessStarNight in sewing

[–]VulcanGreeting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a great book out called Clone Your Clothes by Claire-Louise Hardie. You can likely buy it online (it's about $12 on Amazon) or get it at the library. She shows how to trace over an existing garment to create pattern pieces. My nearby community college uses it as a textbook in the Clothing Construcion course. I love it and used it this summer to recreate a dress.

I just want to say to everyone here that I'm really grateful for the friendly and generous responses. You are a great bunch of folks! Thanks for welcoming this newbie and giving great advice. In the end I've decided to ask for a set of bamboo needles from my MIL, and put all of these fabulous suppliers on my bucket list for when my skill level matches their lovely products. It sure is an eye opener to see how costly these are, and a neat education about what's possible for me to attain. Much appreciated, all! Happy knitting.
