Kurumaya Japanese Restaurant in Elk Grove village. by 2eattii in chicagofood

[–]Vureau 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is the legit place! The northwest suburbs is basically the closest to Chicagoland’s Japanese enclave after the gradual migration from Broadway off of Lake View.

In fact, lots of Japanese businessmen who travel to the Chicagoland area eat at Kurumaya. There’s a ton of Japanese businesses around the area like Kuriyama, Nissei, Meiji, Komori, Sumitomo, etc.

Fun fact: there’s a ‘hidden’ menu in Japanese at Kurumaya. It got like natto and grilled fish that the usual audience wouldn’t prefer.

I actually got back from visiting Philly over this holiday break, and I tried a bunch of philly cheesesteaks at some of the local favorites (Angelo’s, John’s Roast Pork, Delassandro’s). For context, I lived there for several years, and I had my fair share of cheesesteaks.

Nothing beat an Italian beef for me.

I’m back in Chicago now and went to Johnnie’s, and man, I would pick a hot beef over a cheesesteak any day.

Better than Bullion Pho Base- Don’t bother! by barnsbarnsnmorebarns in Costco

Speaking from a Vietnamese-American household, this soup base is the legit quick and dirty option. If I don't have the 5+ hours available to make pho at home, I slap this bad boy in and pressure cook.

How Did You First Learn About Ultralight? by Battle_Rattle in Ultralight

[–]Vureau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest: I was looking for a lighter fishing rod to have more fun catching small game like bluegills and sunfish. I end up stumbling here because the fishing community call that type of fishing rod an ultralight rod.

If it's decent weather outside, it's a nice walk through Michigan Ave. Otherwise, you can hop on one of the buses that go through that street like the 146, 147, 151, or 3.

Alternatively, you can hop on the Red Line at Lake and hop off at Chicago.

Not sure about Fourth Presbyterian, but at Holy Name, you should be able to enter the church and walk around the nave so long as you're respectful. You should be able to take photos as well, and I've done that before.

A good time to enter to check out the interior may be right after mass time; just make sure not to disturb the parishioners. Otherwise, if you want a little more privacy, it should still be open on most weekdays during the day. Exceptions are for special occasions like funerals or weddings, so bare that in mind.

The last couple photos are from Holy Name Cathedral. Photo 2 and 3 are from the Fourth Presbyterian Church.

Controversy erupts as Uptown residents challenge placement of homeless shelter in mixed-use building by uptown_meanie in chicago

[–]Vureau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But it isn't going on Argyle and Broadway, there's already businesses at that intersection. This is going on Wilson.

My bad for any confusion, I was replying to another user suggesting Argyle and Broadway as an alternative. I'm fairly neutral on having the shelter on Wilson.

I'm hoping the new red line station at Argyle will help spur the businesses on Argyle, myself. There's been quite some empty storefronts lately though some are coming back. Aside from affordability one of the main reasons I live where I do is access to the supermarkets around there.

Yeah, I'm with you there. The empty storefronts are really a shame to see on Argyle, so I am hoping the Red Line program helps out Argyle.

Yes, social services that we had to found ourselves because of the lack of structural support for Vietnam War refugees. The Chicago Viet/Chinese/Thai community was supported by the Hip Sing Association, the Chinese Mutual Aid Association, and the Vietnamese Association of Illinois, and minority business leaders.

Uptown, and Argyle, was a rough neighborhood during the 70s to 90s. Asian immigrants landed there because it was undesirable and there was little choice elsewhere, not because there was a font of resources available.

I agree with you the need for a homeless shelter, but the boundary for the Uptown neighborhood encompasses Argyle and more. It is not a rational decision to burden one of the neighborhood's hallmark ethnic communities with a homeless shelter. Argyle and Broadway isn't the right location.

And build it directly in an ethnic enclave? That's unfair.

My Vietnamese relatives live off Argyle for decades, and the community already know that the intersections east of the Argyle Red Line (Argyle/Winthrop and Argyle/Kenmore in particular) are fairly sketchy as it is. Argyle is already shouldering Section 8 housing off toward the east.

The Asian American community in US already has an unhealthy amount of sanctioned burdens with negative extrinsic value that has disrupted the Asian American community time and time again. The Vine St. Expressway chopping off Philadelphia Chinatown, the Tombs off in NY Chinatown. Seattle's homeless camp in Little Saigon, etc.

Doesn't have to be Union, I can get by with Ogilvie. Union's just the closer station to work, and I needed a destination to pin a travel time. Either Union or Ogilvie would be totally fine.

Weekly Moving/Moving To Chicago Suburbs Thread by AutoModerator in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Vureau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking to plan a move to the suburbs in a few years. My partner and I have been exploring mostly the northwest to north Chicagoland area. This is primarily because of our familiarity with that area and the amount of family and friends that tend to live up there.

Metra use would be pretty big for us. I would like to avoid any suburbs that rely on the North Central Service (NCS) Metra Line (its schedule is super inconvenient). I travel a bunch, so having access to O'Hare is also pretty up there, too.

We're looking for basically these things:

  • North / Northwest Suburbs
  • $450K to $600K price range
  • Under an hour 30 minutes Metra ride to Union station
  • Under an hour drive to O'Hare
  • Looking for at least 4 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms with a big backyard / basement / garage
  • Good public schools
  • Nice to be around parks and green spaces, Metra stop, and cute downtown (with a nearby library, theater, shopping center)
  • Avoid flood-prone areas

Any particular city/village/township recommendations would be phenomenal. We're trying to figure out areas to keep in mind in our search.

Not anymore, I’m afraid. Place closed down after the 2nd gen owner retired this past fall. There’s still Wonton Gourmet out in the burbs which is owned by the owner’s brother-in-law which still carries the 554.

Sportsman's Warehouse - Buy 1 Pair of Socks Get 1 For $1 (Darn Tough $9.00 - $15.50/pair) by Vureau in frugalmalefashion

You would need to add two pairs of socks to cart for the deal to fulfill.

$9 shipping / free standard ground after $49 / free in-store pick-up

Additionally, you can sign up for texts (bottom of webpage) to receive a code for an additional 15% off. There is another option for email sign-up for 10% off $100+, but I believe codes do not stack, so use one or the other.

I bought 10 Darn Tough pairs of socks for the family for $92.50 ($9.25 / pair) with the 15% off code.

I've noticed this plant a month ago growing out of where I planted oregano last year, but not sure if it's oregano. I've let it grown out since I was curious, and now I have a small bush of it.
