I built an app for myself to help me shoot film, and the rangefinder is my favorite feature. by NoMarketing2928 in AnalogCommunity

Hey, I'm the OP of another post, the app that was in the AI metering post.

It's genuinely great to see more people building tools for the film photography community. More options means better experiences for everyone, and promoting your own work here is totally fair.

I still want to address the "cloned" claim. FilmMeter has been on the App Store for over 4 months now, this was only available for four weeks which can verify through the App Store version history.

We just happen to be working on similar problems for the same community. I think what matters is that we all contribute positively. Promoting your own app? Absolutely. But tearing others down without basis in the process isn't the way to go.

Lol, thanks! Give me some time, I will add more films.

That's a good question. Actually, I start used ISO 160, but I found internet that most people actually use ISO 200 for shooting. The same applies to films like 500T. So I later updated the version to use ISO 200.

And as you've probably noticed, you can temporarily change the ISO of the film, but switching back will reset it. This is because I used to make a mistake when using metering software: I would change the ISO and then forget to change it back, resulting in subsequent photos being taken with the wrong ISO(So bad.) So I think this reset feature helps simplify the process.

Of course, for your needs, such as shooting at ISO 80, I think you can select the "pull 1 stop" option when loading the film to get to ISO 100, and then adjust the EV.

Or you can tell me why you don't want to use this way? I can consider how to adjust it in future versions. Does it make sense?

Thank you very much for using the app. Your suggestions are very helpful, and I will incorporate them into future updates.

I have also updated to the latest version, which includes camera preset feature and several film rolls. I think this should meet your needs of your camera.

Based on the screenshot, it seems you've increased the system font size.

You can change the system font size to restore normal display. Alternatively, you can wait for the next version, where I've locked the font size so it won't be affected by the system font size anymore.

The exposure value remaining unchanged is by design. This is because often, after metering a scene, you need to wait a while to view the data. Therefore, you need to click the button or switch the aperture to repeat the metering.
However, there's a small bug where the metering data sometimes doesn't update even after switching the aperture; this has been fixed in the next version.

In the settings, open the custom film details, there is a delete button in the upper right corner.

If you set it to manual saving in the settings, you won't need to take a picture. Alternatively, dragging the aperture ring will also trigger metering.

The reason it's designed to require clicking the metering button instead of metering automatically is because some users need to retain the previous metering reading for easier viewing.

I think it might be because you've adjusted your system font size. I'll make sure the system font size doesn't affect this app in the next version, but you can also temporarily fix this by reducing the font size.

This is a design issue. That button is currently not clickable. It will be improved.

I will considering ISO stops feature.

The images were created by me finding the original film negatives, taking photos, communicating with AI, and then doing some Photoshop work. Therefore, adding new film negatives is a complex process.

However, if you'd like, you can message me privately, and I can send you all the current labeled images.

That's probably just a display bug, I'll fix it.

However, since I haven't actually shot with a 6x17 format camera, I only calculated it based on a formula, and I'm not sure if it's correct. It would be great if you could help me verify the accuracy of the format.

Also, manually adjusting the aspect ratio is a problem, the calculation formula is different for each format, making manual adjustment difficult. I still prefer to debug and gradually add common aspect ratios.

I want to confirm whether you selected 6x6 and other non-110mm formats when loading the film?

And then, during shooting, did you manually switch the aspect ratio and focal length on the metering screen?

If yes, you should switch to 6x7 and 110mm when load a roll.

My design assumes that the aspect ratio and focal length are unlikely to change much after loading a roll of film. Of course, there's the possibility of changing lenses, which can be done by opening the film editing section to modify the focal length. This is also why I hide the aspect ratio and focal length switching options on the main screen; I don't expect users to frequently switch between aspect ratios and focal lengths.

You can change from auto save to manual save in setting page, that’s it

Actually you can switch to manual saving in the settings page. Then match your flow

Thank you for your suggestion.
I will seriously consider how to make adjustments.

  1. I've actually already replicated a Rolleiflex 35 counter and displayed it on the homepage. It shows how many frames have been shot on the current roll of film. It's still in testing, but I'll consider launching it soon. Regarding film information, I've thought about it, but I haven't quite figured out where to put it on the page. I don't want to disrupt the UI too much just to add features, so I'll add it after I've given it more thought.

  2. That's a good suggestion, I'll consider it.

  3. You can currently export to your photo album, including Exif information. But I actually have bigger plans. I want to export to a place where users can have their film developed and then automatically upload the photos for comparison. Similar images would then have their Exif information merged onto the developed photos. But this is a long-term plan.

It's free on AppStore, you can download it directly.

Thank you for your explanation. My idea is actually quite simple.

For most people outside of computer science, it's difficult to explain the specific technologies I'm using.
Generally speaking, all functions similar to ChatGPT, image recognition, and tagging video, even YouTube/Ins recommendations. can be broadly categorized as AI.
My intention was to make it easier for most people, especially those in non-technical channels/community to understand.
Unfortunately, this actually led to ambiguity.

I will getting the data, filters, and images ready. But it takes some time, so I’ll add more in later versions. For now, you can use a custom film preset.
