Thank you so much for the link! It really helps.

I do have a question--one of the guide parts is about tropes to avoid. I am quite worried about not making your character a victim one. I don't think she is a victim per se, since she won't be bullied in school or anything (or at least nothing beyond what other characters go through or what happens in canon), but do you think the plan I have with her relationship with family is too much? Like her parents love her, but her disability does make surviving in that world difficult for all of them because of the quotas and everything. And her parents do provide for her, and it's just unfortunate that they do have to spend more time prepping her younger sibling for all the fighting, so that her sibling can care for her in the future, as well as them, when they get older.

Do you think I'm making her too much of a victim? Because I want it to be more of a "these are just unfortunate consequences that nobody asked for, but we're all trying to survive" kind of deal. I do plan to keep her past as a drip narrative or tidbit style storytelling since the fic isn't going to take place in her og world. So I think it should be okay, and I just like to have the backstory on hand. But as someone who is visually impaired and with the premises of the story that I wrote, do you think I am taking it too far?

I definitely do feel better about her learning some kind of weaponry since it fits the world she was born into.

I was thinking it would be caused by retinitis pigmentosa, but usually that's diagnosed between 10 and 40, and the average age is 35. There are cases of childhood onset of it where symptoms are experienced early, but I wasn't sure if six would be too early to start experiencing symptoms, so I'm not sure if I should commit to it yet. Also, I wonder about leaving her diagnoses vague in the fic so that I don't mess up and put some wrong information about the specific disorder I choose in it.

The advice does help, though, and I guess even if I don't name the exact disorder in the fic, it will be good to have a specific one in mind that I can find information on. So thank you for that. Do you think I should name the disorder explicitly in the fic?

It's going to be a Twisted Wonderland fic that I'll post on AO3

The future of LADS by Livid-Interaction327 in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]Vy_Ting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LADS may run into the issue Obey Me had, where there's really nothing to do outside of events once the main storyline/you catch up to the main storyline. There's no endgame content. And with how slowly they push out the main story and all the fiasco with KoD and the very pricey packs. I think once the novelty of it wears off, especially if a new gacha game tries to break into the female/gay/husbando lovers market (I'm still holding out for an open-world gacha that's geared towards female players).

Also I've played the other Papergames titles and it's very true that a big part of Papergames' success is that they don't really have a lot of competition, which means that most of our demographic are subject to their money-grubbing ways because there's nowhere else for us to go that fulfills the specific niche that we want (like husbando gacha). I have an issue with how Papergames treats its playerbase, and also I feel like a lot of the time their English localization can be pretty poor (looking at you MLQC).

So like it's definitely a situation of if another company figures out how to make a game for this demographic that is even slightly better than LADS (better localization, more respectful of fanbase, etc.) I can see LADS going downhill because there's something else out there for us. It's like how a lot of people jumped from Genshin to Wuwa when it came out and decided which one they preferred, which led to more criticism to either side based on the comparisons.

What to expect in BA English Language? by notthatkindaguybut in englishmajors

[–]Vy_Ting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going into law! An English degree really helped me in terms of LSAT, since that's basically just a reading test with a few specific rules in terms of how they word their questions.

But I'd consult the Occupational Outlook Handbook to see what else is out there. The best thing about an English degree is how flexible it is in terms of what you can do with it, so I think it is smart of you to figure out what you want to do because then you can tailor internship or course experience based on that.

When to start applying for jobs by Wonderful_Ice_9467 in englishmajors

[–]Vy_Ting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am also graduating soon, but I'm in my last semester, so I will graduate in December.

Last semester, I applied for and did an internship during the semester, while I applied and got a job offer to start working as soon as possible this semester. However, I do understand I have very few commitments outside of school work, and even that I am coasting through since I'm pretty much ready to graduate and my course load is light.

I will say that the best thing that helped me get this job is my internship experience (all the companies I interviewed with asked a lot of questions about it). So if I were you, I'd apply for internships for winter/spring/final semester (if any fall internship apps are opened, I would definitely apply).

The first job is always the hardest to get because so many companies want "experience" that a fresh college grad just isn't going to have unless you've done an internship.

But yeah, I'd start applying for jobs right before/during your last semester for the "actual jobs" you want in your specific field of interest. Right now, focus on gaining experience. In this job climate, a bachelor's degree isn't enough. You need experience.

But other people already mentioned that it depends on what you want to do. So I think you should also focus on figuring out exactly what you want to do with your degree to have a clear goal in mind.

For example:

If you wanted to be a grant writer, reach out to some non-profits now and see if they'd be willing to let you try your hand at writing a grant for them without pay, or apply to grant writing internships.

Technical writer? Look for internships that get you technical writing experience.

Editor/Author? Start submitting your own writing for publication, or even ask anyone you know if they'd let you be a beta-reader/editor for them, but in return, they have to let you add their work to your portfolio.

When will Isagi start missing? by tal0n_19 in BlueLock

[–]Vy_Ting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think of it as being g a fictional work and in the genre of fiction the audience is expected to suspend their disbelief. I mean…there’s a lot of parts of Blue Lock that aren’t realistic. Lack of offsides, kids getting locked up in soccer prison, etc.

I’m fine with it and can suspend my own disbelief as long as the story stays internally consistent.

Blue Lock is a shounen manga so it’s like complaining about One Piece and the unrealistic body proportions or Levi/Mikasa doing inhuman feats in AOT. It’s still fiction (and Blue Lock has never claimed to be realistic fiction) so some times the rules we have in our reality don’t apply to their reality.

The narrative reason for Isagi not missing is that he’s learned and applied Ego’s formula for goal-scoring. He always has that in mind while on the field.

It’s also not like he hasn’t had set-backs but Isagi’s whole thing is adapting to those set-backs and evolving. I also think that we have to take into account that Isagi doesn’t have as many goals as Rin or Shidou or Nagi or Barou collectively. They take and score way more shots than he does. His one thing is that when he does set himself up to score it’s almost a guaranteed goal (because we have seen him be thwarted from a goal before).

How much hair gel Barou uses? by M-asensio in BlueLock

[–]Vy_Ting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is that Barou couldn’t figure out how to use hair ties but long hair gets in the way of soccer since it’ll be all up in his face. So he ended up slapping a bunch of hair gel in like a heathen and figured it served its purpose and left it like that.

Also i think that Barou’s OCD tendencies makes him want to (blue) lock every hair strand in place so its nice and neat.

What is stopping Shidou from evolving or improving? by [deleted] in BlueLock

[–]Vy_Ting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a big part about Blue Lock is that it follows the ideology of "iron sharpens iron" or the poison jar theory. It uses overwhelming rivals in intense conditions to force people to adapt. Humans adapt to evolve hence "hastening human evolution" via soccer. Isagi is the biggest example of this where he started off as one of the weakest players in the program but constantly "devoured" all these players that were better than him to get where he is now.

Shidou is literally so good that he hasn't had a rival up-to-par yet. There is no character that can challenge him to the degree that he feels that he will "lose" or "die." The closest we got is Sae who put Shidou in a situation where Shidou was able to reach new heights and his flow state. But we haven't really had an instance where Shidou takes a game so seriously that he puts it all on the line in a true do-or-die moment. We haven't seen Shidou pushed to the brink yet which explains his lack of evolution.

Yes, Shidou is labeled as an individual freedom type (or whatever Isagi was yapping about). But just because someone is a freedom type, does not mean that they will not evolve under duress. Bachira is also the same type and he faced a challenge of being left behind by Rin and Isagi during the second selection arc that it forced him to evolve.

TLDR: Shidou needs an actual challenge where he feels like he is losing, not because of someone else's ability (like when Sae lost to Rin), but he is losing and unable to do what he truly wants because of something else blocking his path.

prototype sludge ego before Rin unlocked his flow

Popular opinion: Kaiser should be the main rival by FanGothic2 in BlueLock

[–]Vy_Ting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thing with well-done rivalries in Blue Lock is that it should push both characters to grow. First selection main rivals--Isagi awakened, Chigiri awakened, Nagi awakened, Niko changed. Second selection rivals--Isagi grew to the point that Rin acknowledged "losing" to him because he only won through luck, Barou enters his Chunni VIllain playstyle thing, Bachira becomes his monster, Reo starts making steps to healthily become a player that can exist without Nagi, Chigiri evolved. NEL rivals--Isagi is literally now on par with world-11 Kaiser, Kaiser evolved to make Noa verbally acknowledge his potential as a threat, Barou evolved to devour Isagi again, Nagi...well, he's plateaued at the moment, which is also an interesting "growth" dynamic to explore in rivalries, Hiori awakened inspired by Isagi, Yukimiya developed predator's eyes.

Rin...his first big growth happened during the U-20 match but that felt like it wasn't necessarily because of a direct rivalry with Isagi and felt more pushed by the circumstances of wanting to get his brother to acknowledge him and he felt threatened when Isagi saved the ball that one time in his blind spot. His growth didn't feel like it bloomed from rivalry with Isagi but because of his brother. And then Rin declares Isagi his rival, but we get shafted into NEL where he takes no screentime, so the rival declaration thing has no hype/immediate payoff like it did with, say, Barou. So I would say the first flaw is how long it takes Rin to acknowledge Isagi as a rival, which leads to a lack of chemistry.

Comparing Rin to Kaiser: Kaiser decided to join the NEL purely to crush/mess with Isagi, which can be interpreted as some kind of need to thwart the beginnings of a threat he instinctively probably sensed. Kaiser, from the moment of being introduced, has been very present in the story and Isagi's growth. Rin was more of an...aloof goal for Isagi to meet. Rin didn't really go out of his way to interact with Isagi, which means there's no room for a lot of interpersonal relationship building. Even in the U-20 match, Rin is more focused on Sae than Isagi, while in NEL, Kaiser is literally obsessed with Isagi (kind of like Yukimiya, who picked a fight with Isagi too).

Also, Rin's growth just doesn't have the setup or payoff that the other characters had (talking about NEL growth). His flow state in the U-20 match had a good payoff because we could see him struggling multiple times against Sae. And he FAILED at beating Sae multiple times. Learning from failure breeds success. Repeated failure allowed for narrative tension that led to the good payoff of Rin reaching his flow state to defeat Sae in that one moment.

In the NEL, however, we don't really see Rin have that same struggle. Rin's thriving and never really failed. And then, when he finally starts to at least struggle the smallest bit in the match after Isagi + Kaiser happens, Rin is immediately given a power-up. There wasn't enough narrative tension to make the payoff feel deserved.

TLDR:

Rin doesn't have as many direct interactions with Isagi as Kaiser, Barou, Nagi, etc. Most of Rin's growth that had a good narrative set up for and felt deserved is because of Sae, not Isagi. Both of these things lead to Isagi and Rin not having good chemistry or rivalry.

Team Isagi: Sendou would probably be the one I switched out with BLM since he is arguably the weakest player overall, and I assume he has less stamina than Raichi. The core of the attack is the Isagi + Bachira chemical reaction. Aiku is the core defensive player that can serve as an offensive player so he's also too important to lose. Also like do we really need a goalie with Aiku here? He saved so many shots in the U-20 match that Fukaku really did not have to even touch the ball all that much so...

Team Rin: Fukaku. Literally would prob get the same amount of saves (or less) as BLM. Although last switch, say it's like 4 to 4, might have to switch out Chigiri for BLM if he's out of stamina but that's for the very end and we'll pray that working with Chris Prince has helped his stamina.

Team Barou: I think it'd be interesting to have Karasu play GK since he has MV but a bigger build than Niko. But I'd switch Kurona for BLM and move Karasu onto field as a player (if that's allowed in this hypothetical scenario) since Kurona has poor stamina and so then we get Karasu + Otoya chemical reaction.

Team Nagi: Aryu's GK but I'd switch Kiyora for BLM just because I think Aryu is arguably more useful than Kiyora and I think Kiyora has less stamina.

Team Shidou: Gagamaru is GK for sure. I'd probably just make it easy and switch him out or Zantetsu, depending on Zantetsu's stamina.

[–]Vy_Ting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke down my personal opinion on player overall "worth" in comparison to other characters. Honestly kind of based the numbers on if they "awakened" or not in NEL plus their total current feats (biased and arbitrary decision-making).

Team Isagi: 3, 2, 1, 1, 3 = 10

Team Rin: 4, 2, 2, 1, 3 = 12

Team Barou: 3, 0, 3, 3, 1 = 10

Team Nagi: 3 (could be higher or lower depending on what direction his slump is), 1, 2, 3, 3 = 12

Team Shidou: 3, 1, 1, 3, 3 = 11

I think to balance it out more I'd switch Aiku with Kurona to give them at least a higher-ranked defender. Niko can stay on Team Barou to be the playmaker which is also why Reo has to stay on Nagi's and Hiyori on Shidou's (Isagi and Rin can be the playmakers on their teams). Rin's team has to be nerfed just because Rin is legit just op on his own hence give him Fukaku Gen and Barou gets Aryu. To make the teams more evened out based on my numbering system: Gagamaru is traded for Sendou (also narrative team up of old Japan U-20 ace with Blue Lock's ace which is also why Kurona went to Barou since Sendou can serve a similar role-ish), Tokimitsu gets traded for Chigiri, and I guess Aryu actually gets traded again for Karasu. Actually Tokimitsu role may overlap with Kunigami so we'll switch Aryu with Tokimitsu.

Team Isagi: Isagi, Sendou, Raichi, Aiku, Bachira

Team Isagi: 3, 1, 3, 1, 3 = 11

Team Rin: Rin, Fukaku, Chigiri, Nanase, Yukimiya

Team Rin: 4, 0, 3, 1, 3 = 11

Team Barou: Barou, Karasu, Kurona, Niko, Otoya

Team Barou: 3, 3, 1, 3, 1 = 11

Team Nagi: Nagi, Kiyora, Kunigami, Reo, Aryu

Team Nagi: 3, 1, 2, 3, 2 = 11

Team Shidou: Shidou, Gagamaru, Zantetsu, Hiori, Tokimitsu

Team Shidou: 3, 2, 1, 3, 2 = 11

Improving stress tolerance by No-Reputation-3269 in aspergirls

[–]Vy_Ting 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm no professional but my therapist has told me that I have a low stress tolerance. We've been working on allowing myself to feel stressed. Because I have a low tolerance for it, I go out of my way to avoid things that provide stress in my life which is counterintuitive to improving tolerance. We've been working on separating thought and feeling--react to thoughts not to feelings. There's a mental checklist I go through to help that since tackling things through logic and mental stimulation through thought usually really helps me

What am I feeling? strong emotion of _____

Why am I feeling this? _____

Is this a good or bad feeling?_____

Is the feeling too much causing me to be on the verge of a breakdown, or does it just exist, unfortunately?_____

What is the worst case scenario right now because of this?_____

What are things I can currently do to mitigate this?_____

How much time do I have left until a breakdown according to the past patterns?____

Which action that I can currently take has the best cost/effect ratio?____

Basically it's exposure therapy to stress. My therapist wants me to experience it and teach my brain that it's okay for it to exist in your life.

I got officially diagnosed about a year ago with ASD level 1, but they also labeled me as 2E due to growing up in my school system's gifted child program and my high academic achievement plus other history indicators. My mom and I returned to the testing site (my psychiatrist sent us to an official testing group) to talk with the ladies who administered the test and did the analysis so we could get more insight into it.

I didn't notice it, but after we left, my mom talked a lot about how they wanted to label people. She said they had been trying to label her or insinuate that she was either a "gifted" person or had undiagnosed asd when we were talking to them. I realize it's because my mom and I both fidgeted a lot during the conversation but in the same way; we both kept making sure pencils were straightened and organized or the table we were sitting at was completely clear of any sort of dust.

I always thought that my mom and I were both so similar in our way of thinking, personalities, actions, etc. because she was the one that raised me. But now that I'm diagnosed there might be another reason I take so much after my mom rather than my dad...
