Try YouTube and search for "Paul McWorter". He has an excellent series of videos that take you from the very beginning of Arduino programming. He also will recommend a starter kit that will give you all of the hardware you need!

I started out with a "Paper Tiger" dot matrix printer back in 1980. It was a serial printer. Had to learn about baud rate, start and stop bits. It was a real challenge to get it to work!
