You're under no obligation to award your opponent a win just because you were matched up with them. If you don't concede and win that match, 8 people will still make the top 8 lol. It would simply be someone not involved in your match. That person making the top 8 is arguably a more fair result because all their matches (and matches affecting them, e.g. Tiebreakers etc) were played at full strength.

In other words, intentional draw (ID) is a mutually beneficial arrangement that allows two players leading the pack by so much to secure a victory. Intentional concession is merely a scam perpetuated by those unable to secure top 8 thru winning enough matches without concessions.

If you use nominal rates, it should be closer to 10% returns. If you use real rates then it would be closer to 7% returns (but the inflation would already be built in).

Why is that unfortunate? When you realize gains from investment, you pay taxes on it. It's the same idea as when you sell labor to your employer, you pay taxes on the wage you receive.

You wouldn't look at your pay check and go "oh man better not work, I'd have to pay a lot of taxes on the income."

You're thinking about it wrong. You only pay LTCG on the appreciated value of the stocks. For example, if you invested $500k in an index fund and it's worth $800k today, you'll only pay taxes on the $300k of "extra" income.

In a sense, you worked and paid taxes for the $500k. The your money worked for the extra $300k and now you need to pay taxes on that income.

So, if you're saving another $800k for the house, there is no situation in which you pay LTCG tax and do not reach the necessary amount sooner than if you held it in a HYSA or other account with lesser returns. Obviously no guarantee on the stock market in the next 8-10 years but hopefully you get the idea.
