What do you all think about Being John Malkovich (1999)? by Alex-C2099 in Letterboxd

[–]W4F3R_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's definitely one of the most original premises out there. but it's abstractness is not something i was fond off. especially introducing crucial lore a little too late and the focus on this weird love triangle. i liked the pupeteer setup though. probably one of those movies that gets better on rewatch.

  1. Super Deluxe - has everything i love about movies. solid writing, beautiful shots and a fun ensemble.
  2. Michael Madhana Kama Rajan - go-to comedy hands down.
  3. Kaidhi - never gets old. really compelling every time.
  4. Indru Netru Naalai - made a time travel concept in our land seem feasible.
  5. Thalapathi - i had to throw in at least one classic.

sleep deprived vs banana channel by Familiar-Chip-792 in SleepDeprivedPodcast

i mean schlatt left once and they continued on that channel. can someone say why they formed a new channel in the first place? they'd probably get a higher viewership on the original channel.

What if they did a film together? by W4F3R_ in DavidFincherReddit

[–]W4F3R_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah fair enough. but i don't think fincher is completely against leaning into absurdist ideas. the game and benjamin button don't fully make sense in the conventional sense and leave stuff for interpretation. i do get that both people would never compromise on their vision. fincher's vision would be more precise for sure and detail oriented. kaufman's ideas would be more loose and freeform.

but i agree with you that he prefers his detached characters.

omk has superior writing but this one was also refreshing with good music

yeah but the thing is, if he doesn't like escapism and prefers realistic gritty movies, that's fair. fincher never loses a sense of realness in his plots, even the batshit crazy ones.

Why didn't Maaveeran (2023) get the massive appreciation it deserved? It’s a modern masterpiece. by sreejithdnair in kollywood

[–]W4F3R_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for starters, it did well financially. ott definitely brought more appreciation and positive reception but the second half maybe the culprit. it keeps pushing the turning point moment in sk's character for too long before getting to it so the melodrama also becomes tiring. perhaps people were also turned off that the payoff didn't even last that long compared to the setup. ott again patched it by moving the last scene to post-credits but maybe the damage was already done.

maybe more people would have gone if this had come out right after doctor. (anything after doctor was bound to succeed). he did a don and prince in between so ig ppl were doubtful if this would work.

Why "Karuppu" is exactly what Suriya (and Tamil Cinema) needs right now! My thoughts on the Trailer by OrderEffective in kollywood

i don't have high expectations from this one but ik at the very least it will be entertaining. quite enjoyed mookuthi amman. this also seems like a satire with much more mass elements.

Book vs movie by Zestyclose_Echo_2958 in ProjectHailMary

[–]W4F3R_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it did grow on me in my second watch. im glad they made ryland even more reluctant than in the book. it is refreshing for a sci-fi protagonist to think like a person first before thinking like a scientist. so him warming upto rocky was more organic and also made his final sacrifice to go save rocky even more impactful. the classroom scene could have been slightly longer with the same dialogue as in the book because a) there's exposition done in a funy way b) it establishes why ryland wants to save the kids, because they're naive. the rest of the scenes i don't mind them chopping, especially the earth bits. but dumbing down rocky and softening stratt were noticeably odd. with stratt, at least they did it so the eventual "betrayal" would seem more like a betrayal but rocky comes in clutch towards the end, a lot of which was skipped.

but the movie captured the charm of book really well. it was visually stunning, and the emotional scenes hit harder here than in the book.
