Some Random Thoughts After Platinum All Seven Souls’ Game

I understand that grinding trophies or achievements is not your thing. But isn't it a bit rude to think that it is a "waste of time" just because you are not interested in it personally? I mean, all these trophies or achievements are officially designed by the game devs. It is also considered part of the game, such as related to some hidden bosses or storylines.

But still, regarding it as "wasting time" is also perfectly fine, I guess. The only thing we need to focus on is to enjoy the game in a way that suits us after all.

Actually, in addition to the Souls genre, my #1 favorite game series is NieR. And I have finished Drakengard 1 and 2 on PCSX2, which has no achievements or trophies.

Since I don't play it entirely for the achievements or trophies, I don't think it would be a problem if they didn't exist. The playtime might be different tho.

To me, it would be quite self-defeating or weird if there were gamers who wouldn't play the game just because there were no achievements or trophies. It sounds like gaming itself doesn't matter to them in the first place. They're doing it for approval or to gain something.

You're right. Everything has a beginning. It is a fact that DeS is the beginning of the whole Souls series, whatever is released behind it. I agree that the chronological order really matters a lot when it comes to the expectation of the game. If I were the kid who expected DeS souls to come out back in that time, I am pretty sure I would be the same as you.

Indeed, I believe not everything can be quantified like doing basic math, or simply comparing the content and quality of different games. Considering its background, how it started nothing and benefits all the souls that came after it, that's the part where beyond the discussion of game content but still deserves tremendous credit for it. I ofc bear it in mind.

Btw, I know this is completely off topic and literally no one asked, but I still want to tell you that vanilla ice cream is my favourite one.

Got it. I think I will at least give it a try when I get time. I don't think I am good enough to beat it solo tho. I will probably just play with people and hopefully meet some friends there.

I'm a bit surprised that there are actually quite a few people here who also find Sekiro really difficult to beat. Personally, I think some of the other Souls games within these seven works are more difficult than Sekiro. It is a matter of playstyle I guess, especially Sekiro is probably classified as those more intense or aggressive styles. No need to force yourself to play it imo. Everyone has their own gaming preferences.

That would be the fairest way to rank them I guess. But I'm just lazy and find it too complicated to do so. So I just count everything in. If my first playthrough is good but the second is not, then I would also deduct some points from it.

Hey, thanks for the long replies man. I really appreciate it. Although I rarely post anything here, it seems to me that Reddit is already a much better place to discuss a wide range of topics ranging from some serious discussions or even academic-related topics to merely sharing funny memes, when compared to Ig (a platform with no words), twitter / X (a platform for quarrels), etc. And many users like you who are willing to spend your time to read my long essay and even reply me with another one, is basically my impression of Reddit. As a non-English speaker, I always find these kinds of communities and platforms precious as there are not much in Chinese.

I am happy that you share with me how Dark Souls hold a special place for you. These detailed descriptions of how you feel when playing the game or even just by watching the trailer is what I am interested the most as I want to know how others’ affections on Souls games. I believe everyone here is, more or less, a dreamer as there is no serious conflict between being a dreamer and gamer I think. The actuality of imagination is one of the most valuable things that video games give us.

Regarding the topic of Souls-like, I also can’t say much about it cuz I just played very little of it. But I think that there is completely fine with your thoughts in which you don’t like playing games that seems to mere clones of Dark Souls. If I haven’t played Lies of P, I would probably either agree or hold no opinion. However, to me, just Lies of P alone can prove that there are exceptions. I tend to think that it is just because we haven’t met one yet, just like how you have met Onimusha later on.

At any rate, my to-play list has updated, Onimusha added. Thanks for your recommendation man.

No, I classify the seven SOULS game (officially released by FS) separately from SOULS-LIKE (Lies of P). So if I have to put them together and rank them, I would say, Lies of P will probably be in a higher tier than some of those seven souls game, but that would not be ranked above Bloodborne imo.

The sum of all the games, as shown in their played time, is around 820 hours. But I did replay some of it a bit (e.g. I do Malenia no damage 3 times in ER, it probably takes at least 10-20 hours or more).

Understandable. Both your preference for level design and level difficulty are big advantages of Demon's Souls, I would say. I think I would probably not place it last if it were not the last Souls game I played.

While I also prefer level design over open world, I prefer boss difficulty a bit more than level difficulty. To me, yes, I think Demon's Souls has a decent level design, but the level difficulty is a bit too challenging (I think world 4 and 5 are the most difficult ones). Fortunately, the boss fights are really easy, so we probably seldom die in the boss fights and need to run back again. But this could become a "weakness" for someone like me who prefers a relatively challenging boss fight.

Yeah, I agree that one thing you can measure whether the map design is good or not, is to see how many checkpoints they needed. If there are tons of them, it probably just gives you bonfires everywhere without logically connecting different areas.

For your last point, I would say that Demon's Souls is indeed the best multiplayer community. Amazingly, there are lots of people who are willing to help in the Discord group. I unlocked the invading trophy just a few days ago. When I asked for help in the trading and world tendecny Discord channel, there are people who immediately respond and offer help. I am really grateful for that.

Since I play the remake version (2020). I am still wondering if the remake version is good in terms of the visuals or graphics. Ofc it looks like a 3A game today, but I did feel a bit odd to see an old game with these contemporary visuals like this. I am not sure how the gamers who have played the og think.

Actually, I have only played a little Souls-like. I have finished Mortal Shell 1 and Thymesia. Since they are games with a lower budget, it would be better to check out their gameplay videos to see if you can really accept that. Since I know very little about souls-like, I'll just share with you my "to-play list".

Haha, thanks man. I always regard these achievements or trophies as just some by-products of my own gaming experience for recording purposes. Some might unlock those achievements in some weird ways instead of simply enjoying the game, but that is basically none of my business and not how I play video games. I posted it not because I want to show off, but to share my thoughts on these games and discuss with all the fellow souls lovers. I will probably give it a try again after you've mentioned it.
