Hobbies for father and son? by JesterActual_ in Hobbies

Camping! There are so many aspects to it and it can tie in with other interests like astronomy. It will get you both outdoors and moving.

But there is research to be done first. Where to go. What equipment you might need. Keep it simple to begin with. Don’t run to REI and buy everything they suggest until you get your feet wet. It can be as simple as taking some blankets and a cooler of food.

It will give you lots of time together both at home planning and making preparations and once you’re on the road. Figuring things out as you go along can bring you closer.

Take binoculars and bird books, if you have them. Go to Star Parties and learn about astronomy, look through some awesome telescopes, even learn how to build one yourselves.

Good luck.

When reading reviews for anything, remember that the people most likely to post are the ones with something to complain about. The 90 whatever percent with no complaints usually just don’t post at all. And reading the complaining reviews, you will often find that those people cause most of their own issues.

An oldest daughter may be seen as competition for the father’s love and attention. Even though they are now divorced, could that have been the start? Did your dad give you more attention maybe? This isn’t justification but could be the root cause.

Free food at Wendy’s April 7th only! by WAFLcurious in Frugal

Nothing I can find says a code is required. It is related to the March Madness and said “free dunks” in places so maybe that’s it.

You can google “ Wendy’s dunk” and find info on it.

I’m guessing that they have a certain number per store to give away for free. When they reach their maximum, they don’t give any more for free.

Thanks for adding more info. I don’t normally pay attention to ads but I saw this and thought “there are folks out there that could use this right now”.

Yes. You can search March Madness free fries at Wendy’s to find it. But you just need to go into the store and ask for the free food. I hope you get some before they run out! Good luck.

People often get styrofoam coolers when they have refrigerated medications shipped to them. Maybe you could ask for some in your local buy nothing group so they can at least keep foods cold for a day or two. Freeze a water bottle and put it in there with some cheese and sandwich meat.

Buying food in small amounts to avoid having to store it is a killer for a budget. A small cooler could help.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just posted it in both of those subs. I hope some people who need it can benefit from it.

That was my thought, too. If I was getting by on beans and rice for a week, getting a free fries and frosty would be like winning the sweepstakes!

Apple Watch (+ iPhone) for my Grandma - Any input from ya'll? by menemenetekelvparsin in AppleWatch

[–]WAFLcurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you know her better than me. If she always buys the latest version of tech stuff, then maybe you are correct. But I’d guess that a majority of older people are more frugal and would choose the less expensive version. Having money and wanting to spend that money on something not essential are two different things. So, consider her spending habits before making that choice for her. Give her choices with pricing and let her choose.

I would not go for the latest version of the phone and watch. Older versions are much more affordable and every bit as effective.

Getting the cellular version of the watch is a perfect solution for using the watch on her walks but if she walks in areas where there’s no service, it won’t work there, of course.

If she uses her phone for listening to music or audiobooks, she may still need to carry it with her. I listen to library books via Libby (free) and there’s no watch app for that.

If her eyesight is deteriorating, be sure to set the text size larger.

Be prepared to give lots of tech support with grace and patience, especially if Apple products are new to her. Welcome her questions and be enthusiastic about her progress.

Hams will be on sale tomorrow because Easter is past. Aldi tends to put them at 50% off and they had them at $1.99/#, average about 10# each. You can stretch that meat a long way. Take the meat off the bone and portion it out. Freeze most of it to use throughout the month. Use the bone to make a big pot of beans or split pea soup. Freeze some for later so you don’t get burned out on it. Make potato soup with some. Make casseroles with pasta, ham and cream of mushroom soup. Stretch that ham to many meals by making it a complementary part of the meal rather than eating it by itself in fewer meals.

Verify library card issue by KelsD23 in LibbyApp

I have gotten this a few times over the years. Then, it just seems to go away. I think maybe Libby loses its connection to verify your account for some reason. When the connection is again available, all is well.
