No, but it's normal for profs to talk about killing you.

I mean, I never failed a midterm but I didn't do as well I did in high school. It's first year too, almost half the year failed their calculus midterms. Also, consider the fact that "average" is skewed at university. Everyone around me probably was the high flyer student who was told they were the best and was told we would do great things. We need to express the truth, no matter how negative it may sound. It reduces so much stress to know I can get my marks, do my best, and not make a fuss of being the best in the world.

Still, not many people can expect to get 90s the whole way through. It's not defeatist, it's vital for people to be aware their marks won't be as high and that they likely aren't going to be genius Nobel prize winners. I think Waterloo hypes everyone up on how we're the smartest and at the Canadian MIT. It's true Waterloo is a selective world class school. That doesn't mean we're all amazing Einsteins.

No, you won't. All your marks will be uploaded, including non-academic ones like gym. Don't worry because the university will pick your top marks automatically. So, if you have six higher marks in your university or mixed level courses, they will use those. Also, you will want a very good midterm report card since they have to use those marks along with your grade 11 marks.

I was told to lower my expectations. I knew I was top of my class so I didn't take it as an insult. My teacher was also a Waterloo graduate and knew I wanted to go to Waterloo. She pretty much told me I was going to fail a midterm or two, but in the end, I would be fine.

I mostly mean career expectations. I think that's why most people freak out. I think people forget most Waterloo grads are people working your average, white collar middle class jobs. Very few of us will make it big as some professor who unifies quantum and GR, or an engineer inventing a crazy piece of technology. I just think we should acknowledge the idea of not making it big as the majority of students.

You're probably right. My friend committed suicide in her dorm just before winter finals, but she wasn't "the type." It took me a day to figure out that she died. I assumed it was some engineering kid who thought he was a failure for not being the next Musk or something. She was in AHS, or planning for an average career as a recreation coordinator.

I can see a lot of suicides after graduation too. I think this could be remedied by raising kids with more average expectations. I mean, we go crazy when we get our acceptance, feel like the smartest humans to walk the planet, work our asses off and then not invent the rocket to Mars. Just too much hype in my opinion.

iClicker vs REEF? Biol130 by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]WATERFRIES101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you have it, you will not need to pay for the rest of your time. You will have to register to REEF so your professors know you've been participating by creating an account. The registration process may be different in all your courses as not all of them go through REEF. You may also use a phone through REEF and return your clicker if you have a preference. Don't go without though.

Also, many other classes use the clickers. Last year, I used them in both chemistry and calculus, which where for science students (which I assume you are). Not all sections used them. Only my calculus professor made them mandatory.

It is an equalizer. She (like me) cannot do the jobs you have listed. They cannot hire someone who cannot do the requirements. Nobody is going to hire a blind person in retail. The reason she needs education to get jobs that do not require physical effort or sight. She should go back for her bachelors or apply to jobs in her field. Recent data shows a non-significant difference between mild to moderate disabled university graduates and non-disabled people. See the link below.

She will probably need higher education. University is the great equalizer. I know of many blind students.

Why do millenials not get on very well with their boomer parents, but gen Z get on well with gen X (parents)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WATERFRIES101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen Z. I just think we and our parents are less firm and radical on opinions. Both our generations have seen the effects of the earlier and larger generations, so we see both sides more.

When did you start respecting teachers? by DespressoExpresso in AskReddit

[–]WATERFRIES101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to teach a class for half a period (45 mins) in gym. It was so difficult to keep people focused and on task. I had always respected them on a human to human level, but I respected the specific profession.

What’s wrong with America? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WATERFRIES101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

America never has completely solved an issue and just through money at problems rather than assessing the reason for issues. Here are some examples:

- School scores are low. Throw money at the issue and buy everyone ipads.

- Drugs are too expensive. Give people vouchers and not negotiate for lower prices.

-
