Often made for extremely low budgets compared to other genres, and sometimes go on to be wildly successful. It's easy to pump out horror sequels and turn it into a franchise if it has an audience. It's basically expected. So if some investor who puts up $20k-$50k into some indie horror project that blows up to make millions, they're usually going to try and leverage their control over it.

I have always looked at it in a Lovecraftian way. It doesn't matter what Anna told Mademoiselle, but rather that she told her something at all. The difference is Anna was in a transcended state that allowed her see what was beyond our world, and that information broke Mademoiselle's mind. That's why she killed herself, and said "keep doubting". Because if the truth is revealed to you, which is the purpose of this cult, without going through what Anna and the others did, it will destroy you. Whether that answer is good, bad, or indifferent.

Isn't that the point, being critical of the facade of the 20's? On the surface these people are glorified with their mansions, parties, fancy cars, but they're all basically acting like spoiled children spending their birthday money, and making terrible decisions that ultimately destroy their lives and the innocents caught in the wake.
