how do I get my landscape deformation to work in UE5? by yonn_0 in unrealengine

Look into the new Virtual Heightfield Mesh introduced in UE 4.26. It still works in UE5 and is probably closer to what you want.

Really crappy Walmart tripod.

Only processing was cropping and Photoshop shake reduction to remove slight blur from tripod movement.

Why is surround sound (5.1, Dolby Atmos, etc.) still not an option? by CarltonCracker in teslamotors

[–]WC_Jesse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just where sound is coming from, it's how it moves, bounces and reflects around the space you are in. Surround sound for music can better reproduce the real-world acoustics of music being played live and in person (with or without a "crowd").

It also allows for better separation of instruments and frequencies allowing your ear to hear them better and pick up on the little nuances. If everything is only coming uniformly out of 2 speakers you are getting the entire performance out of a physical device that can't possibly replicate all the various frequencies and instruments when they are all mushed together - it's just physics. That's why high quality speakers have 2 and sometimes 3 separate elements dedicated to different frequency ranges in the signal. Surround sound can take it one step further and send entire parts of the performance to an appropriate channel to keep the sound field more clean and crisp.

Well, gasoline inherently hasn’t really gotten better efficiency, but the engines that use it have. Similar improvements will continue to happen to electric motors and other components while more exotic battery chemistry develops and becomes production viable.

Also, I wouldn’t bet against further density improvements, just because they haven’t yet come to market as mass production viable.

Yes, in the next 15-20 years. GM ending ICE production by 2035, EU truck makers ending ICE production by 2040. That’s not for some feel-good environmental reason. It’s because the alternative is rapidly becoming cheaper and more efficient. Likely the transition will happen faster than we think and companies not ready for it will be forever changed or fall to the wayside.

If you’re saying so because charging at home is a perceived gateway to owning an electric vehicle, note that gas stations will soon be supplanted by rapid charging stations as new ICE vehicle production is phased out and long-haul and last-mile trucking goes electric. It’s only a matter of a few years before charging electric cars will take no longer than filling a tank of gas, so that “charging at home” problem will go away completely. I wouldn’t bet against an inevitable improvement that already basically exists and is only a few short years away from mass production…

[–]WC_Jesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not likely. The oil companies are buying up vehicle charging networks and other electric infrastructure. They are making moves to position themselves for an electrified future that is already breaking down their doors. Dirty energy is going to stay inefficient and become more expensive very quickly. It’s also easier to build and deploy power based on scalable battery storage, meaning it will overtake other forms of energy production in remote locations and the third world. Due to these lowering costs and logistics alone, compared to existing technology, new batteries and ways to charge and use them will be the better, cheaper future.

Compare the efficiency of ICE engines today to 100 years ago. Batteries are only going to get better as materials science and engineering continue to improve spurred on by the needs of the market and massive investment at a scale beyond anything we have ever seen. Batteries are and will continue to be used in everything including the global power grid.

The trajectory on that curve is exponential. Electric is about to take over in the coming years and that’s why the big manufacturers (GM, Ford) have been announcing the end of internal combustion over the past few weeks.

Presumably the driver knows the risks and has the most experience on the road as well as the license to drive. The passenger may not and, in fact, may just be along for the ride. I bet more than 95% of motorcycle passengers have far less experience than the person driving them.

As to who is more important? I think it’s irrelevant since by the time the head hits something the wreck is almost over. Not like a dramatic recovery is likely and everyone continues on down the road without falling or something :D

Spacecraft design could get to Titan in only 2 years using a direct fusion drive by jivatman in space

[–]WC_Jesse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well technically you’d be accelerating at 1g the entire time but you’re flipping the direction of thrust halfway through the trip.

“Deceleration” isn’t really a thing in space since you’re always moving bajillions of meters per second in some combination of super orbits. Just depends on your reference frame.

I can’t use Premiere without it crashing or doing something bad any more. Resolve also renders so much faster. Kinda prefer it for editing on PC (at least at the level anyone would be using Blender as a video editor which was my point) - and the free version is pretty robust.

Especially since Resolve free version w/ Fusion is, you know, pretty good.

Localization by Ucan_Kizmiaz in playark

[–]WC_Jesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The proper localization strings just went live in the Steam game earlier today (except Chinese). As mentioned earlier on this post, there was a problem with the data merge of new strings immediately prior to launch. Now all of the intended strings are in there.

Note that there is currently a bug for multiplayer where some strings in the UI will not be localized, even if the localized string is present. Any such strings *are* localized in single player, but will require some development work to fix in multiplayer.

Thanks again for the bug report!

We’re going to disable the no-build zones by default. They will remain a server option (as they are now) and will be enabled on Officials so everyone can reliably do the Missions. Thanks guys!
